Facebook and Boxee Team Up Around the TV

Today at CES, we’re announcing a new Facebook app to extend Live TV beyond your living room and onto your Facebook Timeline.

Boxee was built from the ground up to allow you to share with friends and receive video recommendations from them.  With a Boxee Box & Live TV there’s nearly an infinite amount of video to watch.  To help you sift through it all, we’re taking social one step further.

Boxee is one of the first TV apps to let you share what you’re watching on your Timeline and to help you sort through what’s on.  The new TV app for Facebook Timeline will make it easy to discover new video with friends and share the experience with them. Let me show you what we’re talking about.

I’ve got Boxee Live TV tuned into the Parks and Recreation.  After 2 minutes of watching, Boxee can post this to Facebook if I’ve given permission to do so and it appears like this, first in ticker, then my timeline, and finally in aggregate.

If friends click on the link, they’re taken to a brand new landing page with more information about the show including the episode and season information.  In this way, I can “check into” a show.

These features are opt-in of course, so people will never know what you’re watching, unless you really want them to.

You can always edit your settings from your Application Settings Page on Facebook, or can remove specific activity directly from timeline or from your personal Activity Log on Facebook. And this new Timeline app will allow us to display what friends are watching in Live TV channel listings like we’ve talked about in previous Live TV posts. For those who have pre-ordered we’re just a few weeks away from shipping yours out(targeting the 3rd week of January). If you want to pre-order to ensure that you’re one of the first to check out the new features, you can get it here.

Team Boxee.

Very cool linkup guys! Cannot wait to get the Live TV Device.

  2. Flabeo says:

Has there been much interest in bringing a HDD to the Boxee Box and making it a PVR using the Live TV Device? I'd be picking up a Live TV Device then.

  3. Joe says:

Did you really "team up" with Facebook or did you just program to their API like everybody else?

    • Andrew says:

We've been working with them for the past few months on the implementation – working together to figure out what we thought the best experience for connecting to FB, securing privacy, and displaying content would be.

  4. flabeo says:

Netflix did something similar in Canada, they said they couldn't launch it in the US due to privacy laws? Not to sound like someones mother but are you guys in the safe zone when it comes to this sort of content sharing?

  5. Jeremy says:

Pretty cool…I wont be using the liveTV function, but cool for those that will…

I long for the day that I can have just one box to rule them all…if i could do everything I can do on my directv box on the boxee I would be in heaven…well, if it would stop crashing/glitching every couple of days…

On our way, though! Doing a good job, guys. Keep it up.

  6. saltedlolly says:

Will Facebook Timeline support only work when watching Live TV, or will it also support local video content and internet streamed content? If so can we enable it now?

  7. @davorm says:

This seems like an interesting feature, just curious how does the "Watch it Later" feature work on the website link the friend clicks? Since NBC's videos don't work on the Boxee Box, or is this something that's fixed in the new version of Boxee?

    • @davorm says:

Nevermind… I guess it kind of works… just a little flaky. But question still kind of remains, NBC isn't listed as a channel in shows on the Boxee Box. You actually have to use the browser.

  8. etis says:

Hi Guys, Great work as usual!
Will this feature be available for 'normal' Boxee use, meaning streaming from the web/a computer, or only for LiveTV?
Speaking about LiveTV, do you plan on supporting Idan+ in Israel? Yes, I know we only 2 relevant channels but for those of us who use Boxee with no cable provider and still wanna get a glimpse at Channel 10 or 2 for once in a while this would be great. Personally I use A combination of Boxee and Idan+ set-top box as my TV, if and when PVR functionality would be available i'll switch the lousy set-top box to Boxee LiveTV in no time.

    • Andrew says:

sharing other things you're playing on Boxee makes total sense.

      No plans to support Idan+.

      • Pichirichi says:

Andrew, when you say no support for Israel is planned is this just for PVR functionality or also for the Boxee TV dongle? Or in other words, if I'll get a Boxee TV dongle will it be able to receive the over the air broadcast in Israel?

  9. @mikeczyk says:

I agree this is one step closer to total social/media integration, but it would be great to see this functionality built into the local files I have. For now I'll still use IntoNow to tag it.

  10. @MattJPea says:

Yuck. Spotify, Netflix and now Boxee all jumping into bed with Facebook. Couldn't think of anything worse… Automatically sharing what your reading, listening too, watching. This is a feature for the benefit of advertisers not users. Will not be opting in. Love my Boxee Box, hope you hide this feature away and don't make it prominent.

  11. @furiousnewf says:

When will the Live TV device be available? Specifically in Canada.

I tried the pre-order from your site, using the pay pal option and it says PayPal can't be used for preorder……

    • RogerPodacter says:

i just got an email from hauppage saying it shipped. i'm in the US, though. not sure how that applies to you up north.

  12. @furiousnewf says:

    Actually it says:

"PayPal order processing is not available. Please select another payment method."

And add my vote for the PVR, then I could dump mythTV, or add a mytv app that works!

  13. Scott Williams says:

Trying not to troll but REALLY, People are none stop complaining about bugs and problems with the software and this is what you choose to spend your time on…. Fix the bugs make Boxee solid and please, please stop messing around with features that no one really wants or asked for.

  14. @Lee_Machine says:

Great stuff. I would need to get a new external HDD for this to work since it (the HDD) uses both USB ports.

  15. Shawn Davis says:

Great. Any luck getting 3Tb drives to work? Priorities…

    • Andrew says:

one of our priorities, but it unfortunately requires an overhaul of certain systems to work… next on the list after official 1.5 release.

  16. Tadpoler says:

So more irrelevant stuff from the people who take years to develop what others could do in a week. Yay

  17. max says:

Any news on when/if Amazon Video-on-demand will be supported?

  18. Mr.Hassan says:

Would like the same function for us G+ users out there,it there a plan of supporting that ? Or does the Facebook deal probit that? Miss the ability to share my finds instanly When I'm leanbacking..Instead of finding the link manualy and Publishing ur from My Tab or cell..

  19. Chet says:

If I don't opt-in for automatic updates, will I have the ability to "Post to Facebook" during or after watching a show? I don't really have an interest in posting everything I'm watching, but it would be nice to be able to post something if it was particularly interesting or entertaining.

  20. livetvless says:

    guess you're not shipping this week . . . where's that update?

  21. Mason says:

Fantastic goods from you, man. The overall look of your site is wonderful, as well as the content! So , I just bookmarked your website and add it to my favorites.Keep up your good job and posted us like this.

  22. Doug says:

Boxee, your company has been nothing but a big disappointment. You took open source software, violated the terms of its fair use, and profited while lying to your customers. Details listed here http://www.infinityoverzero.com/bbox/ … You guys got greedy and it is only a matter of time before you become irrelevant. For all those that support the open source community, I recommend buying Raspberry Pi, a $35 device that plays 1080p and supports XBMC or whatever else you choose to put on the device that you have paid for. Forget Avner and these other clowns… http://www.raspberrypi.org

  23. Joe says:

Why would I buy boxee live tv if I can already watch this live content on my hdtv?

  24. J Laurence says:

Facebook is the future no matter how you look at it. Boxee is smart to connect with them.

  25. mp mcmahon says:

delivery for Boxee live to canada is $24.00…..too high,, bye

  26. azturtle says:

When will the Facebook app be available on Boxee? Also, will Words with Friends which is on FB be available? I tried it from the FB website, but it does not support it in the Boxee browser. Will we be able to download Firefox?

  27. شات says:

Glad to see that the 5 minutes+ shutdown bug is fixed. Good work.
