Road Trip to SxSW: featuring Richmond, Atlanta and New Orleans Boxee meetups

Rather than fly out to SxSW we decided to make a road trip out of it, with stops/meetups at Richmond, Atlanta and New Orleans. Besides doing a meetup in each one of these cities we’d like to meet and talk with users, students, and developers. For our time in Austin we will stick with is what now a Boxee tradition: a Boxee RV and a Boxee kegger.

With this in mind, we need some help from Boxee fans out there. Please leave a comment if you can help with any of the items below:

  • Venue for meetup in each city – if you live in Richmond, Atlanta or New Orleans and have an idea for a venue (bar, big office, club, university) that can host ~ 100 people
  • A fixer – in each of these cities would be great if we would have a local “fixer” that can help secure the venue, arrange for drinks, food, sound system and in general be able to hustle.
  • Great stops along the way – any good ideas for must-stop spots along on our way. this is our current drive plan: http://goo.gl/maps/yxMO.
  • Bail agent –  as a cab driver in vegas once told me “when in a new town, it’s always good to have a phone number for a good bail agent”

On the morning of March 8th we will pick up a Jeep Cherokee (or something similar Hertz tells us) and get going. We will drive it like a rental, play loud music, moon fellow travelers, eat greasy food, stay in cheap motels.  We’ll also be giving out T-shirts & Boxee Boxes by D-Link along the way.

Currently our schedule looks like this (click on a Meetup to RSVP):

**UPDATED March 7th (Mon) - Richmond Meetup

March 8th (Tue) – meetup moved to Monday

March 9th (Wed) – Atlanta Meetup

March 10th (Thu) – New Orleans Meetup

March 11th-12th (Fri-Sat) – Drink. Party. Meet with people. Dance.

March 13th (Sun) – The 2nd Annual Boxee SxSW Kegger (1p – 5pm)
If you were there last year you know it was a good time.  We’re going to try and keep the same easy going atmosphere this year so you can just come out and meet good people, have some food, and have a few drinks. We’ll send out more updates as the date gets closer.

March 14th (Mon) – Fly back to NYC. Start cleansing process.

Don't live in any of those cities, but you should offer the "fixer" 5 free Boxee Boxes to give to their friends for offering to help.

You will literally be driving within a few miles of my house right before you hit Baltimore. If you feel like you have too many t-shirts, boxee boxes, or any other kind of merchandise I'd be glad to take some off your hands. I'll even trade you strait-up with some drinks, snacks, and access to a clean bathroom.

  3. Ryan says:

I live in Norfolk only about 40min outside of Richmond I can help in any way just let me know.

  4. Thorin says:

Talking to the boss about using our offices for your Atlanta stop. Will write back if I get permission.

      • Thorin says:

Permission granted. Email me for details, but our folks are excited to have you guys in house. We did a huge lunch and learn a couple months ago on the BoxeeBox, GoogleTV and AppleTV.

Our offices are on the 22nd floor in the heart of Midtown Atlanta. Great views from everywhere. Large, connected conference rooms, flat screens all around the office, secured parking, etc. I think it will be perfect for y'all.

May want to update your eventbrite page, it shows the kegger going through 3/20 — that'd be a hell of a party.

  6. mg says:

Here's a good idea for a real fixer — get Boxee Box to play DV files:

    Hey Boxee Family!

I live in Richmond and would be interested in helping with that meeting. I would recommend meeting at Captial Ale House. They have TONS of room, lots of great drinks (top 20 places to get beer in the US!) and I am good friends with many of the staff. If you are interested please email me!

    Boxee rocks!

    -Brad

  8. My company would be willing to pay for food for the event in ATL. Just shoot me an email and we will make it happen. We are huge Boxee fans :)

  9. Garagegoblin says:

You guys are traveling past Durham, any chance for a stop in my neck of the woods? (Raleigh/Durham area)

  10. John T says:

Hey you guys are coming right thru GVille(Greenville) SC on I-85..If you guys are looking to stop before heading on into the ATL let me know. weve got some nice places to refresh yourselves. Long Live Boxee!!!

  11. Deyve M says:

I wish you all could make a stop in b-more or even dc. Richmond on a Tuesday is going to be really hard, it's like a 4 hour drive. If you decide to stop at a MD gas station, restaurant etc., let me know!

How about a pre-meet up shindig in MD? I'd really love a boxee box, quite honestly.

  12. @Johnson_Brett says:

You guys should stop in Montgomery for lunch on your way from ATL to LA. Could point you towards some great grub…

  13. Jimmy says:

Hum… I live just an hour or so north of Austin, I may have to see about driving down.

  14. Jay says:

head to torchy's tacos in austin order a dirty sanchez. the best.

if you can try bar-b-que in lockhart it's ~40 miles out of your way but well worth the drive. if too far stay local and try iron works bbq on cesar chavez near downtown.

shoot some pool on sixth street at buffalo billiards and do a little people watching. one of my great pleasures in life.

order a natty light at the creekside lounge on 7th and see if casey will setup a "bluff special"

check out the whip in. if you drink beer you will thank me. http://www.whipin.com

man i miss living in austin

  15. Steven says:

If you're coming to Atl. Stop in Greenville. We'll have a party of 100 or more. Our teach after 5 crew usually is around 200. It would be cool to learn more and drink some suds.

  16. Jason says:

Even though you are not stopping in Washington DC, you should take the Boxee RV through town to see the sights. Avoid rush hour, but I gotta say, you pass through DC at night and you should really really see the capitol at night. Don't even have to get out, if you don't want to, to enjoy the sights. See Einstein statue too! Come to some of our great bars too like ChurchKey.

    Happy Happy RoadTrip!

    -Jason

    • avner ronen says:

Good to know. We are actually picking up the RV only in Austin. For the roadtrip itself we are taking a Jeep Cherokee.

      • Jason says:

Great! Easier to see the town. If you guys are interested in seeing Washington DC during a quick drive through let me know. A must stop IMHO is ChurchKey (http://www.churchkeydc.com/). Drive around the monuments for a while… drive around the Washington Monument… who knows even use a "bat signal" to place the Boxee logo on the Washington Monument :-D

        Happy Travels!

        -Jason

PS: After a few months I have finally made the wife into a Boxee convert! I think she finally gets it now.

  17. Joe from Minneapolis says:

    HULU+ coming soon?

  18. Chris says:

Get to B.D. Riley's Irish Pub in Austin and enjoy a Guinness, you won't regret it.

  19. Dana Reeves says:

My husband and I are both Boxee fans (got him one for Christmas!) and we'd love to shoot photos and videos of the event in Atlanta. Sound good?

  20. Jeffrey Kennedy says:

Awaiting orders to set up the New Orleans portion of the trip!

  21. Denis says:

Avner.. schedule a Boxee Road Trip for Canada, even if it's not for a tradeshow, our beer is strong, our strippers are awesome..that should be reason enough.

I'll host you guys and feed you lobster, steak & spliffs for dessert!
