UPDATE: We had an issue with TVs that were set to 1080i. We fixed the issue and testing with our Early Access users. Hope to post it back up soon.
We have released a new version of the Boxee Box firmware. Your Box will update automatically within the next 24hrs or you can manually check for the update by going to Settings>System>Update. This latest Boxee Box firmware update has many bug fixes and in this case lots of work on the Boxee Browser. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at CES to ask questions, make suggestions, sing praises, and generally give us energy on the show floor for 9 hours a day.
The change list is below, but we do have one frustrating bit to share with you that while we’ve been demoing VUDU without a hitch this week at the show, there’s still a few issues the technical team is trying to get to the bottom of. Darn you all to heck. Now your gonna send us an email to say when its ready. All this time I've been frantically running from BBox upgrade button to the forum and now I have to check my email in between all that. This is beginning to feel like a second or third job.
I feel your pain. I've been doing the same dance with my boxee box. Except this is my only job right now since I got laid off.
your box will automatically upgrade when the release is out.
What's the newer version? just to check out mine.
haha yeah i've been checking daily since the 9th, i was thinking my box was busted or something, i came on here to troubleshoot!
I asked this on the forums but this is a major issue. I have a few HDDVDs that i used MakeMKV to convert. They play fine on my pc as well as streaming on my laptop. They did work when connected directly to the Boxee box via usb. Streaming seemed to crash the box. Is there anyone at Boxee that can help me with this? They even crash the Boxee sofware on the PC. ???????
Forgot to mention that i upgraded to SP3. Can i do a factory reset to get rid of SP3?
we're testing a new version of Sp3 right now. Once you receive that version if you're still having the issue, the best thing to do is email support aT boxee d0t TV.
The RC of SP3 solved the issue! looking forward to trying VUDU
Glad I waited to download it, my BB was running OK with almost no bugs so I was going to wait and read the beta testers reviews, glad I did……
Well, I snagged it before the pull – and it seems to work fine for me.
You sure there is a problem boxee people? You know people are always going to whine about their little issues.
You really think they pulled the update because a few people were whining about their little issues? Really?
With so many different routers, TVs, and internet connections connected to the Boxee Box there's a variety of challenges around every release. We do our best to test for as many of them as we can, but ultimately we can test every setup. We heard from enough users that we stopped the update to fix the issues we were hearing about – hope to have an updated update soon.
Hi, I jsut wanna know if this new firwmare fix the "Unavailable details for movie title" when you try to manually identify a file…
Thanks in advance
thanks for letting us know!
My boxee box cant seem to find it
The release was pulled due to some folks having problems with the update.
That sucks
I think it's great that these updates are being released as much as they are, but could someone tell me when the Boxee software is being updates for the Mac/Windows platforms? From what I can tell the Mac/Windows version is still at the 0.9 mark with all the perks that it brings with it, compared to the 1.x version for the Boxee Box right?
Are we going to end up with different versions for different hardware? I do hope not, because it'll only cause confusing and missunderstandings
It indeed seems awfully silent on the 'regular' platforms (mac/win)… i hope it's not some tactic to force us all to buy a BB.
but really… when are the update coming? cheers
Once the 1.0 firmware for the Boxee Box is updated to the point that it's got far less bugs than it currently does and more of the bells-and-whistles available in the 0.9 Boxee Beta PC software (including Netflix, probably a semi-customizable homepage, etc.), then Boxee will port the updated firmware/software back over to the original platforms (Windows, OS X, Linux).
e.g., Don't expect a PC software version of the current Boxee Box firmware anytime soon — but hopefully something like Boxee 1.5 will be made available to all users (Boxee Boxes, TVs, PCs, etc.) later in the year, and from then on it'll be more likely that upgrades will take place across all the platforms in a more unified way (although I'd expect the firmware for the BB consumer electronics will often be a step ahead of the free software versions, since customers are paying for the CE devices).
Now when is the SP3 firmware release going to become available again? I want to try it out, bugs or no bugs…
Well that;s not really a fair deal: I would pay for a mac/pc version no problem… I have the hardware so why would I pay for a complete BB? I might have to switch to Plex.
Why would you want them to release it for pc/mac when its not working properly yet on the box? Wait for them to iron out the bugs on one platform first. Believe me you don't want it until its ready.
To be honest I cant imagine it's THAT buggy… why would people buying a BB otherwise pay for it?
I REALLY like boxee and think it's moving in the right direction. However, there are a lot of improvements to be made and bugs to be fixed. Until now it seemed like they were steadily ticking things off the list. It's been pretty dead lately as far as updates on the Linux/PC/Mac platforms and if it continues I may start looking elsewhere for a solution that actually progresses.
I don't want to do that because boxee is great, but if bugs aren't fixed and important features aren't added then I want to find something that will better fill my needs. It would be nice to at least have an idea of when some updates might be coming.
I concur
You guys have gotta bring this version to the PC! There's a lot of updates/additions of note that I want to be able to take advantage of.
Boxee Box is buggy as hell and you want the team to start concentrating on the free product when paying customers have a barely usable box? You probably won't see 1.0 on PC/Mac until the second half of 2010… if even
what's so buggy about it?
besides the fact that it crashes the box every so often and it's missing a whole bunch of 0.9 features … nothing mate… it's heaven on earth…
I hope this update is finished within the next day or two. I filled out a return notice for my boxee because of the above issues this update will supposedly fix. I need to figure it out by the end of the week. Hurry!
working as fast as we can…
Hurry Up. You guys are almost the last ones to figure netflix out.
Netflix are almost the last ones to figure Boxee out.
Hopefully the folks at Boxee have learned from this experience. People wouldn’t be in an uproar if expectations hadn’t been set that first “an update is coming” and then “we’re releasing tomorrow with vudu or not”. It’s all about expectations. I’m sure these tweets were made in the spirit of open and honest communication. However, now that Boxee has found it’s way into the main stream living room it’s important that more thought go into communication. I say this not because I’m angry myself, but because I want Boxee to succeed and it pains me so much to see to see this train wreck occur. It’s just the sort of fuel people need to get them to buy an Apple or Google TV instead of going with Boxee.
Boxee=Fail. I can't wait till the netflix explanation in 3 weeks.
Soooo Christmas=Fail to? I mean, there you have to wait 4 weeks and then 356 days for the next update. I mean it's a Beta product and you knew that when you bought it ( If you have the Boxee Box)
I think you should give them a break, there trying to make things better. Im sure things will be in the near future. So the only thing that's a fail is your ignorance
I'm sorry, but I didn't buy a beta product, it certainly wasn't launched or advertised as one. I bought a £200 media device. As far as I knew it worked as advertised. You seem to be rewriting history here.
What software product have you ever bought that was fully finished? It's an evolution and a healthy one (albeit frustrating at times): bugs get identified, fixed, features added, users help focus development efforts, etc.
I'm on WinXP and I receive several "critical" updates every month. Software is complicated.
I bought it knowing that netflix would arrive by the end of the 2010. Now it's by the end of January. But that probably won't happen either. That's all that I ask of boxee box. Something that is already found on everything from televisions to phones. In my opinion. Netflix is the basics. They should launch with the basics.
WHAAT? C'mon!
Thanks for the update. However, my Boxee Box doesn't seem "to ignore the prefix in the sort order for movies/albums/artists which start with ‘The’ and ‘A’". My movies are still sorted from the first letter, no matter if it's "The" or "A". Or maybe I haven't done the requires adjurstments in the setup?
Works as it should here… did you adjust the setting?
I just bought a boxee box this weekend… still getting used to it – its a little buggy! I love the ethos though – keep up the good work! I replaced my PS3 with this so pleeeeease get Netflix Canada working real soon!
I am still not available to upgrade to the new version.
I live in Austria (NOT Australia).
Is it happening to anyone else?
How can I fix this???
Its not available yet.
Same country, same problem.
Same problem here too (am an Austrian in Taiwan).
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
you have to excuse me as im writing from my boxee box. but if you are not gonna fix vudu. or at least netflix soon. im gonna send this peace of shit lock up every few hours box back. dont worry thou. im not gonnna sue you. im just gonna be real sad and disapointed;)
sorry to hear that. we're working through things as fast as we can.
after breathing out and calming myself Iǘe decided to keep it.
it afteral plays all my local files.
patience come to me..
I know the feeling talked my PARENTS into getting one and they have had TONS of problems. The last Update MADE IT WORSE. I KEEP Telling them this update will fix a lot of the issues (ALL I HOPE) but it says NO UPDATE AVAILABLE and it is NOW THE 16th OF JAN. !!!! wtf?
So when will the "bug-less" version of SP3 be uploaded? And when will Vudu be released? If you'd just communicate a little more consistently (sometimes, you are awesome and then other times, you go dark for too long), I'd be willing to bet the majority of your customer base would be more than appeased. A lot of people bought this for local streaming and fro that, it largely works well. The other stuff would be great, but we can wait. We just want to know for how long. If you are going to miss a "scheduled" release ((you said we'd get Vudu last week), give us a heads up. Simple little thing = happy and loyal customer base.
+1 ! I hope they are not waiting for Vudu to release again SP3
Here here. Can we get a not-as-vague status report at least?
We plan to release SP3 separately from VUDU at the moment. The updated version of Sp3 is in testing with our early access users currently, and we're hoping to have it out to you as soon as we can.
With VUDU we have one issue left to fix, and we're working with Intel and VUDU to determine where the bug lives and how we can fix it. Once that's done, we'll be ecstatic to get it out to you.
Thanks for your understanding and know that we're all working as fast as we can to get these updates to you.
With the Vudu release pushed out well beyond the original promise of last week, does that mean the Netflix release for end of January will also be delayed? Or are these two dates (Vudu and Netflix release dates) independent of each other?
Good question, Bryan.
Thanks for the update, Andrew. That response was exactly what I was looking for. Some people on this forum expect extreme granularity with your answers, which is ultimately impossible, I think. You CAN over -communicate (a common mistake in project management).
I think you struck a nice middle ground here. That sort of transparency will likely satisfy all but the most disgruntled of users. For what it is worth, my experience with Boxee Box has been mostly very smooth sailing. and I am very pleased with my purchase.
(It's a free country, but why dissatisfied users who returned the product feel the need to simply "yell" at you here is confusing to me. If they have constructive feedback, great. They can even repeat what others have said. But keep it constructive, people).
Good luck with the fixes.
Can't wait to get this bug fixed – http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-7508
I just switched from boxee on my laptop to a boxee box, and I miss it – I have no idea which episodes I've seen…
Is this update ever going to make it? My BB is mad buggy and its now annoying my wife.
Yeah its taking forever! The W.A.F. is pretty damn important!
the latest firmware is in testing right now. as soon as our QA gets done with it, we'll get it out to you as fast as we possibly can.
The lack of updates is deafening.
I have to 2nd and 3rd the comments of others: a tiny bit of info and context would be helpful; use the blog – or twitter – there's little excuse for not communicating a bit better
We've put together a new build and uploaded it to our early access users to test. Once we get the green light from our QA then we'll send it out.
Fantastic! Makes sense and adds clarity to the statement it was being fixed/packaged/uploaded (to beta users). Thanks for the update and thanks to the beta testers for the early blocking and tackling.
-Joe
get your stuff together. Boxee box going back (both mine, and the one I bought for my dad). Fix playing large files (mkv) over lan, why does this not work yet (buffering issues), and where is this update!
sorry to hear that. working as hard as we can to address everyone's issues
Give the RC2 a try. I was having the same issue and this fixed it. Or wait for SP3 and your issue shld be fixed.
My MKV files were 6-25 gb and stuttering. Now they play fine, so hang in there
I returned my Boxee Box back because the Dec 31 deadline for Netflix was missed and no ETA has been given for Hulu plus, which was also originally promised to arrive in 2010.
Every blog post since then (X deadline was miss, Y bug was introduced, etc) has reminded me it was the right decision.
Yep – it's been a difficult road as we're trying to do something no one else has done before. There are bound to be bumps and issues so a simpler device that already has what you're looking for might be a better fit for you.
Just curoius, you dont in any way outsource any of the work do you? If so that is PROBABLY 99% of the problem…
Like everyone else, I am a bit confused. This post says the update is out, yet it is not. There is thread in the forums regarding a release candidate, but yet this post says it is actually out…. a bit misleading. This post should be updated or deleted.
update was out, then pulled down. We're currently updating the update and have it in testing with a pool of users to make sure we've addressed the concerns voiced here.
Once the update is out, your box will automatically update within 24 hours of the release so there's no need to worry about "missing it".
Thanks for the update Andrew. I understand the situation; I was merely pointing out that you have a blog post with the title "New Firmware Update, Hot off the Presses", yet there is none, which may be confusing for newcomers. That is all.
CHANGE THE BLOG THEN? Uh Duh? I see this has been going on for Days maybe you should look into something Like Quicktest Pro to aid in testing????
Hi Andrew
I have two Boxee Boxes. One got the pulled update, the other didn't. I don't have a 1080i TV and the update has fixed many issues I was encountering (most significantly, the aspect ratio problems with mkv files). If the problem WAS only with 1080i tvs, why not offer the pulled firmware as a manual download for those without a 1080i tv and who wish to use it? If there are other, more serious reasons for pulling the firmware, then is there any risk in using my updated Boxee Box while waiting for the re-release??? Thanks.
No risk at all.
However the release candidate is on the forum for ALL to try / upgrade.
Therefore you can apply that latest build to both boxes if you want consistency.
Thanks for the tip DMAN, I didn't know that. Managed to find the beta on the forums and have installed on my second Boxee. Seems to be working ok so far.
Thanks for the tip DMAN, I didn't know that. Managed to find the test firmware on the forums and have installed on my second Boxee. Seems to be working ok so far.
hello???? any news?
News is on the forum.
The release candidate is there for ALL to try.
A change has just been made by YouTube which breaks access to YouTube material on the Boxee Box, whether within apps or in the browser itself. There seems to be no reason to blame Boxee for this – it was fine yesterday and today it's broken, with nothing changed by Boxee in between.
Meanwhile, http://www.youtube.com/xl is working on the Box – a version of YouTube intended for TV watching. Whether this is something YouTube want to force Boxee users onto one can only speculate.
Glad to see they are releasing this update I've had my box for a couple of days and its been quite un-usable due to bugs. Had to reboot it about 4-5 times using the button on the box.
Hopefully this will sort that out as Boxee is a brilliant piece of software. Just wish we could get the skin thats available on PC as the new one isn't that nice.
I updated and the Wifi died, can't find any wifi's now.. at all…
Thanx…
"UPDATE: We had an issue with TVs that were set to 1080i. We fixed the issue and will upload a new version soon." If you believe that, I've got this great house in Phoenix
I like to sell to you…
The $200 Boxee Box can NOT do Netflix, Vudu, Hulu+, or AmazonVOD, and yet another deadline missed. I can not even begin to articulate my level of unhappiness with my purchase. I feel bamboozled.
For $100, I can get a Roku that does Netflix, Hulu+, AmazonVOD, NHL GameCenter, MLB.tv, and more. I decided to pay $200 for Boxee Box instead because (1) it was deceptively advertised ass being capable of doing Netflix, Vudu, Hulu+ _AND_ stream all formats of local media, and (2) the Boxee software on my laptop supported the misleading Boxee Box advertising claims.
Since the Boxee Box only does half of what I purchased it for and half of what it was advertised as being able to do, GIVE ME BACK HALF OF MY MONEY SO I CAN BUY A ROKU TO ACCOMODATE FOR THE BOXEE BOX FAILURES!
I am saddened that so many Boxee Box fanboys are happy to have been swindled out of $100 that was better spent elsewhere on products from companies that don't practice deceptive advertising and regularly fail to meet their promises. What does it say about our culture that people now happily accept these behaviors as commonplace?
Signed,
Disgusted.
Boxee clearly stated Hulu+ later in the year, Vudu is coming soon, netflix end of month, amazon vod never talked about. Have fun with that roku and streaming local files. From what I've read NHL works. MLB is in the off season so no one is using that yet.
I stream bluray rips over a LAN just fine, no rebuffering, no crashing. I occasionally do internet streaming, but not often. When I do (with the current apps) it works fine, about as good as internet video can work.
I too am looking forward to Netflix and Vudu but I can wait till they are ready.
I think some people just like to hear themselves vent.
In 6 months, I think BC will be the most dynamic option in the market by far. That is why I am keeping my Box. That said, I think its unfair to cast aside those who are upset with the repeated deadline failures as "whiners" or "complainers."
Objectively, Boxee has done a terrible job with public relations re: the Box. They continue to over-promise and under-deliver on deadlines. This is completely avoidable, and Boxee deserves to take criticism for it. Additionally, Boxee should make some attempt to acknowledge this continued PR failure. After the drama surrounding Netflix "by the end of 2010," why did Boxee immediately turn around and promise Vudu "by the end of the week?" This was so silly, and continued to alienate people.
Boxee has a great product with unlimited upside. They should emphasize what an amazing piece of hardware the Box will be in 6 months rather than trying to convince themselves they are "just around the corner" from being fully operational. If they did that, I think people would be much less frustrated.
PS: I meant "BB" not "BC" in the previous post.
Mr. Michale,
On the Boxee Box website back in early Dec. they had the Netflix logo on the website. This is the reason for the Boxee Box purchase. By displaying the Logo they did in fact indicate that the Boxee Box was capable of such. This in a bait and switch and deceptive practices. They also indicated VUDU. Oddly enough they still have them listed on there page. This is deceptive practices.
I know Netflix Logo was there so as the VUDU but what can Boxee do if their Partners backed up or I would say didn't deliver what eve they have promised with Boxee.
Actually the logos are on the boxee web site, not the DLink Boxee Box site. On the DLink site it says coming soon (which it is). On the Boxee site it is listed because these things DO exist for the boxee software. Remember, DLink makes the Boxee Box. Boxee makes the Boxee Software. 2 different things, 2 different companies, 2 different feature sets. Also it was really really clear that netflix would not be there on ship date. Boxee said so, DLink said so and everywhere you went on the web said so. So if you bought it thinking it would be available right away that is your fault for not doing your research. This is no where close to bait and switch (I don't think you really understand what that even means).
You're absolutely right in that it isn't a bait and switch. It is, however, extremely misleading. It wouldn't be legal in the UK in a print advert without a disclaimer that the featured content wasn't available in all formats. I don't know if things are different in the States.
I in fact do know what a bait and switch is. The fact of the matter is that Boxee software clearly runs on the Boxee Box. Yet the material available via Boxee Box which runs Boxee SW is not the same. Even Boxee admits that they should provide a better description of what is supported via Boxee SW by computer and Boxee SW via the Box. A bait and switch is enticing a consumer with one thing and providing him with something else for which the consumer was not made aware of the differences. In addition a bait and switch can also be providing a good or service for which one the consumer was incited was changed prior to the sale. Please do me and others a favor and be civil. I do not think I taunted you or question your knowledge.
/R/
Rob
You are right it is a shame that their partners caused some assumed headaches. I for one would never announce that I have won the lottery until I had my winnings in hand. I feel that Boxee was a bit premature on the announcement. I would also argue that providing the logo for both Netflix and VUDU that they have mislead. Granted I have the box and am keeping it. I have used Boxee on many machines and am happy with the service. Just not really pleased with their apparent lack of planning and poor execution.
I think you must have the Only BB that works then. Do you have some secret build that doesnt have all the bugs? All I have seen is lockup after lockup and you cant actually watch ANYTHING, Unless you like watching the Screen say "BUFFERING" or if you like to see a blank screen and nothing else.
What does it say about our culture when people only think about themselves?
Netflix, Hulu+, AmazonVOD, NHL GameCenter, MLB.tv, and more = all suck. Sorry. That's the truth. Yes, the "more" part sucks; not a typo.
I don't think so Boxee Box have done any thing Bad its not they are not tryinig they are trying their best I believe. But its just I would say little bit of unluck hit them. They did pushed the update on regular basis, but I think its their QA dept who messed up and it can be happened with anyone, any company I am sure they don't wanna create any mess again so they are taking some more time to make sure things do go well don't you think their company want to make sure this time everything should go fine its for their repo too. To me it looks like they have lack of tech expertise / people due to which they cannot do much. That is why they are taking time for every update etc… But believe me Boxee still the ball is in your court do you best as much as possible you guys are already doing a lot, people will get mad and they will get upset but how you come up in the end will cover it up.
My company bought several Boxee not one we bought 43 Boxee Box and writing down this over here we are not using a single boxee and we are not even re-turning them because you guys have promise us that audio/video play-list feature is on its way and I am hoping it will soon available .
Thanks
Can you guys add the CW network to the TV shows section? It isn't blocked through the browser and they have full episodes online.
same for fox
So on sunday they release a SP3 which gets pulled, and 5 days later were still left with a hard-to-install RC?? Great advertising……
To Andrew or anyone that can answer this —
Will this update bring support to those of us with 3TB external hard drives attached?
http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=22115&…
That forum is all about it. Apparently some collaboration with Intel is needed according to the Boxee rep there developing a new kernal to deal with the new tech or something?. THIS IS A HUGE DEAL to many current and even more future Boxee users. Please tell me this feature is coming soon. Larger data sources are the future, and this has to be a part of Boxee for me.
Keep up the hard work.
Andrew…it's 1/14, can you provide the latest testing status, and set our expectations for the next few days? thx
Feels like netflix is slipping away…
VUDU is up and running
Not for me, it's not
Love the fixes that you have made with SP3! Please keep up the good work! Unfortunately I have t report that switching audio streams breaks the audio when watching MKVs. I'm using a receiver if that matters… Thanks!
why i still can update? from europe…says that i still have the last firmware but its not the last :p
Still nothing eh? You guys should start censoring the negative comments in preparation for the netflix failure come the end of the month.
The 1080i bug is still there on my boxee box, even with the 1.0.3 firmware, is it supposed to be fixed in that version?
Hello its the 16th now WHEN will the update be out???
NEW HOT OFF THE PRESSES UPDATE!!!!! update pulled but we are gonna keep the Big BOLD TITLE TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE ITS UP.. LOL
The 'Boxee update and fix' page has become the biggest 'boondoggle' since 'truth in lending' campaign. But it is a good 'laugh' with the morning coffee.
I am disappointed in boxee.
I still love the device, but the only reason I bought a more expensive boxee box, over western digital, and roku was the fact that I believed that the engineering, and development team at boxee would keep extending the firmware, and making this box better, and better. I bought it for the software that was supposed to come, not what was on there now.
Pulled releases reek of a sloppy development managment, and QA. I am now questioning Boxee's ability to pull off an admittedly complex task, like integrating netflix into it's firmware, and future feature build outs. I hope that Avner has a good engineering manager in charge, and is working on a way to reign in a sloppy code cycle.
What happen to the updates? How are we supposed to know about your most recent failures if you don't post about them? Does anyone still work at this shitboxee company?
I'd love to have the ability to turn off the hypnotic dancing, rotating grid when playing music files from boxee box. Or am I missing something? Currently, I turn off my monitor.
*cough*
~(o:
Initially I was very happy with Boxee Box but after a few weeks things have changed. All bugs (and there are loads of them) have started to annoy me so much that im thinking of buying something else and sell my Boxee Box. Don't get me wrong, its perfect in many ways and especially the GUI is very userfriendly and all.
But please, release more updates with buggfixes! And faster since once a month is to slow for this mediaplayer.
Hi. I saw you guys at CES and was very impressed. Can you tell us when you believe the Netflix integration will be accomplished? I cannot buy the device until this feature is up and running as my wife will not allow it!
Latest update has semi-ruined watching streaming video online. Most videos can no longer be put in full screen mode when streamed from the net.
I purchased 2 boxee’s and encouraged 4 others to buy boxee…now I’m starting to regret that. It seems comittments are not delivered on and the product is getting worse, not better. Pretty frustrating, but I guess I’ll just get in line with the other frustrated customers who are starting to regret their purchase(s).
my boxee just started acting weird. my pandora app is stuck in fast forward. i really about to return it cause i wanted nexflix and hulu.
