VUDU’s awesome on-demand movie service will soon be available to Boxee users in the US on Mac, Windows, and Boxee Box platforms.
Boxee is honored to be VUDU’s very first Mac & Windows delivery platform, allowing users both new and old to access VUDU’s huge library of content from any computer. In turn, VUDU will be Boxee’s first premium pay-per-view movie service with access to new release movies as soon as they come out on DVD along with a huge catalogue of TV shows and critically acclaimed films.

With the industry’s largest HD content library and the ability to stream content in full 1080p HD, VUDU has quickly separated itself from the competition as a must-have service for any cinephile. VUDU makes it easy to find a movie for any taste by bringing in a huge catalogue of options for indies as well as Hollywood hits, new releases (like Iron Man 2, Get Him To The Greek, and Prince of Persia) available to rent as soon as they hit the market and thousands of titles available for just $2 for 2 night rentals. In conjunction with our existing movie library and Netflix App, we’re excited that Boxee will soon have options for every budget and access to almost any mainstream movie.
With the new VUDU App, Boxee users will get full access to a massive library of movies and TV shows. The App gives you access to all major genres, curated movie collections and the ability to pivot off of directors/actors/producers (helpful when your friend swears the guy who ate next to you at Fred 62 was from Silence of the Lambs, and you say he’s from the Wire, and you realize, you’re both right).
VUDU has been kind enough to offer every new user who signs up through Boxee a free movie so you can try out the service when it launches.
Boxee’s free software will give viewers access to VUDU’s immense movie collection in standard definition. Users who have the Boxee Box by D-Link will experience the mind-blowing quality of VUDU’s full HD and HDX library delivered directly onto their televisions in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.
We’ve been big fans of VUDU for a long time. We’ve seen them grow from a small startup just like us, to a new powerhouse within the entertainment industry after their purchase by Wal-Mart and release on most major TVs and Blu-Ray players. Through our partnership, anyone can now try VUDU on their computer via Boxee; something we hope that will enable a whole new audience of people to experience their service. Meanwhile we are looking forward to a long-lasting partnership with them across all Boxee-enabled devices.
VUDU will be available as a Boxee App on Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Boxee Box by D-Link this November.

Sound great guys! Will it be available in Europe? Or better question: how will the payment be? I live in Europe and dont have a american creditcard…
VUDU is currently only available in US. would love to support them in EU once they get there.
great news about Vudu but if I am reading this right you just confirmed Netflix as well
Unless something has changed in the few months I have been away from home, Boxee has had Netflix. I think the only platform that didn't have access to Netflix via Boxee was AppleTV.
I think the problem is that since the Netflix Boxee application doesn't work on Linux, and since Boxee Box is Linux-based, some people have concerns that it might not show up on the Box. There is a bunch of information floating around about it, D-Link said on Facebook that it was on there, and judging by any previous experience with Netflix and embedded Linux it should be there. But still, no official official announcement yet…
Or whether they'll have the HD streams..
It was casually mentioned in the last blog post, actually.
What about ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox? Will they be block access, similar to what they are doing with Google TV?
currently almost all those sources work on our downloadable software.
not sure if we'll be blocked on Boxee Box – if we see that it's happening we'll make an announcement so you know what to expect before you buy.
*** Reposted under correct thread ***
If you are blocked, you should figure a way around this with your software. This is crazy because I can hookup an HTPC to a TV and get the network content. This would be a sales downer for you guys so if there is a way to add functionality that somehow changes how Boxee Box appears to the network web sites, I would implement this ASAP.
Agreed. This will certainly not be a mainstream hit unless you guys figure out a way to get the ad supported "free" content to users. Otherwise, this becomes no different than Roku but costs $100 more.
Will the Boxee Box interface support an HTTP proxy? (I know the downloadable version does.)
yes!
Boxee has been dodging blocks for more then a year now. So I would certainly feel better about the Boxee then the Google TV devices.
Cant wait. .You go boxee
Congratulations guys!! Bring Amazon too!
Is it going to be available worldwide?
VUDU is currently only available in US. as they grow, we'd love to bring their service to our international users.

This is great news, but the non-Boxee Box users don't get HD or 5.1 audio? That stinks, a lot of people have computers faster than the Boxee Box, so it doesn't even make any sense.
it's a licensing and security issue that's out of our control, but we're hopeful in the long term that we can bring VUDU in all it's 1080p glory to every Boxee user.
Tell us, who's fault it is, so that we can hammer them
I'm disappointed that I won't hand VUDU HD and HDX on my HTPC… but I understand that it's not your fault.
No HD Vudu to Boxee on HTPC's? Too bad studios, back to torrents. How dumb are these guys? I'd much rather pay $5 per movie for instant 1080p access but the studios don't want to offer it to me on my HTPC. oh well.
I will not be buying a boxee box, a google tv box, apple tv and so on and so on. I have a HTPC. I would be glad to pay for the service, but not at SD.
I agree – I don't really have plans to buy a Boxee box, because my MacBook Pro is more than up to the task of running Boxee…
This is very disappointing. I'm sure its not Boxee's fault, so hopefully Vudu will bring full HD to those of us with HTPCs soon. If I didn't already have a very capable HTPC (with Blu Ray), I'd be getting the Boxee Box. I hope you guys have a good marketing strategy because I've seen very little press and this thing blows the Roku, Apple TV, Google TV, etc. out of the water. Need to get the word out! Also, please try and get Amazon VOD on Boxee. That would be another great addition.
Great news !
But it seems to be available from USA only :

What a pity !
:'-(
C'est dommage, je sais, mais nous sommes en train de parler avec pas mal des societes europeens qui veulent etre sur Boxee. J'espere par ce date l'annee prochaine nous aurions autant services francaises qu'americaine.
Thanks for it !
I hope most of providers will arrive into the Boxee.
Do you need some help for discussions, or development between you and french providers ? I'm very interested about it, if you have some news.
I'm trying to make known Boxee in France.
"Congratulations guys!! Bring Amazon too!" +1
Still no good movie solution for linux… : (
Cool, but Linux support would be even better. But, I suppose that's an unfortunate side effect. I was holding out on pre-ordering the Boxee Box until some concrete information about the content partners surfaced–I think this has convinced me to get it. Off to Amazon I go.
VUDU will be available as a Boxee App on Windows and Mac computers,
No love for the Linux? Is this a DRM issue?
Great!
Now please add Amazon + 2
I love this. I would have loved to see it implemented into the movie library, but i understand. this is a great day as we will finally be able to get a solid renting solution going for Boxee users. Even more stoked it will appear on windows and mac. It is a logical move for Vudu.
I am still on the Amazon video on demand bandwagon. Since you guys are great at being open to everything its good to know you will be supporting multiple platforms. Amazon has a good amount of TV shows that would be wonderful to have on Boxee. the more choice the better!!
VUDU will have their own app, but movies will be integrated into the movie library as well.
Andrew,
I believe this is the first time you've also mentioned officially that Netflix will be on the Boxee Box. Does this mean a Netflix app is coming to the Linux version of the Boxee software, and will Netflix HD titles be available?
nice catch.
I wouldn't jump the gun too fast. There has always been a Netflix app. The real question is will there be Netflix streaming on the Boxee Box. My feeling is that there will be considering they have said that they hope to have all the functionality of the windows boxee version on the boxee box which does do this. But I'm sure they're going to wait until they're ready for the official announcement. I know this one feature is a make it or break it feature for them (me included).
This is great but pls don't forget those of us on the other side of the pond. There is a real opportunity for Boxee to establish itself as an international platform at a time when the major players are all very US-centric.
I also know some chaps in Australia who would also love to see boxee apps for local content.
Cmon boxee we know you can do it!
Already starting to work with European and Australian content providers.
International content will grow significantly in the next year.
What is this? 1997? I’d gladly pay the extra dollar for gigabit component
My guess is that Boxee will be the first to pioneer most of the new functions and features in the IPTV industry, on a large scale and with open-source availability before other industry leaders. I believe Boxee will actually be recognized as “the standard” and beginning of the industry, even by it’s competitors once Boxee starts actually competing.
Most companies will be more concerned about people installing modifications and hacking their product rather than implementing new features to their product… they are too concerned about people being able to download and watch online content at their own leisure, WITHOUT commercial interruption… where will the money come from without people being fed advertisements almost every second of the day??
Securing revenues is ALL Google and Apple are concerned with… Boxee’s focus is more on functionality and implementation. I’d choose Boxee any day with choices like these.
From what I understand of Google TV, is that they wont be having any way to manage your current files, outside of simple search. One of the many reason I will stick with boxee and buy me a boxee box is the way it displays my huge library with cover art. If I wanted to search my library through simple text, I would just stick with the default windows search. Boxee wins.
Maybe this would be because Netflix streaming depends on Microsoft technologies, most of which are already on the xbox 360. For the 12,678,356,735,276,523 TIME, You will never see Boxee on the 360. Period. Done. End of story. No matter how much you ask.
Hey Hobart – it’s filed under United Football League rather than UFL; took me some searching as well so I hope to have it changed shortly to “United Football Leage (UFL)” so no matter what you search for, it should come up.
[...] Internet is ablaze with the buzz of the latest Boxee blog post regarding the long awaited retail release of the Boxee Box. The big change was the hardware [...]
This is absolutely huge guys. Congrats on the success.
thanks – we think so too!
I have a cisco valet plus on my computer desk, and one cat6 cable from there to my home theater located 50 feet away. Where the cat6 ends I have a lynksys gigabit switch spreading the signal between my dish box, blu-ray, iomega media player and one extra waiting for the BOXEE BOX.
IMO theres nothing better than wired cat6 networking, 802.11g wifi is great(for my iphone or other portable devices) but in order to stream 1080p files from my computer to my tv using my media player, wired is the best bet, hands down.
Since right now the software only VUDU on windows only provides SD res is there any reason to use VUDU vs all the other options? (netflix etc..) at SD res does VUDU offer more content then the other options?
VUDU offers movie rentals as soon as most films are out on DVD, which most other providers on Boxee do not do.
Netflix streaming titles leaves A LOT to be desired. They have a very short list of available titles for streaming. Amazon VOD FTW!
It is a matter of perference. Netflix has several thousand titles currently in streaming, (and adding contantly). Tons of older titles to peruse + thousands new and older titles via mail. All for $9.00 a month.
VUDU: new titles @ $2.00+ per 'viewing'.
Do the math, and take your choice. Variety and options always good.
When Boxee from D-Link is released what will be the format for external drives usage. I would like to place all of my MKV files on an external drive so I can play them back when I want.

Linux anyone…..?
I am interested in knowing in clear words the quality (HD / 5.1 sound) of services like Amazon VOD and Netflix and whether or not they are going to be available on Boxee Box by DLink. This is going to be the deciding matrix for me to invest in the DLink Boxee box, because well, it should integrate nicely with my existing home theater setup.
To make myself more clear, I want the YES/NO answers to these:
Service Amazon VOD Netflix Watch Instantly
Available? YES/NO YES/NO
HD Video (1080p, not less) YES/NO YES/NO
5.1 surround sound YES/NO YES/NO
On a side note, great work with VUDU's full integration! This certainly wins you a customer like me who doesn't like Netflix's inability to stream HD content (both video and sound) (Ya, I know they enabled it on their PS3 heads). Kudos to the team!
Will Vudu App for PC and BOX have Rotten Tomatoes Reviews and Wiki Links built in like it does on LG Netcast TV’s?
Hey Andrew! I'm really excited for Vudu support for the Boxee Box! I was wondering if you would possibly take a look at my suggestion for support of Rhapsody and Napster over in your forums. I envision apps for the Boxee Box which would allow you to play music from both Rhapsody and Napster. I would also love it if you could integrate control over your music playback into the Iphone/Ipod App (like Sonos). My idea is that you would be able to browse your local media that the Boxee Box scanned, along with Pandora, Rhapsody, and Napster all from the Iphone/Ipod, so that you don't have to have your TV on when playing music, something which I feel is a little silly (unless you only have a TV connected in which case it becomes a necessity). Please let me know what your think! Here is the link to the thread: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=21460
BOO VUDU! SD only on my HTPC? Not to mention that movie playback is buggy as h**l and out of all the movies I've tried, none have been 16:9. I'll stick with iTunes. At least I know it'll work!
So Vudu is owned by Walmart and Boxee is a particularly good piece of hardware to stream walmart's content. It seems like it would make sense to have walmart be a retail partner.
imagine deals like buy a new HDTV from walmart and add a boxee and get a free VUDU $100 credit.
the thing about boxee is if I tell people about it they are happy to listen. when they see it in actin they want it. boxee in more places will really give it legs.
How come the price in US dollars is the same in UK pounds???
Will Vudu be available on Linux? If so, when? If not, why?
