Boxee Box Ships on Nov 10th, RSVP for the launch event in NYC

BoxeeLaunch

We just got final confirmation from D-Link that the Boxee Box will start shipping on Nov 10th. Boxee and D-Link will have a launch event in NYC to celebrate and demo the Boxee Box, complete with Boxee 1.0.

People who pre-ordered from Amazon should receive their Box as early as Nov 11. The Boxes should start appearing in stores on Nov 17th (if you are the type of person who can’t wait the extra week you should probably pre-order from Amazon today).

D-Link has gone the extra mile (or kilometer) and turned mid-November into a worldwide launch. You can already pre-order the Boxee Box in Canada, Australia/New Zealand, UK and in other countries across Europe (these units will all start shipping on or shortly after the 10th).

On the evening of the 10th Boxee and D-Link will have a launch event in NYC to celebrate and demo Boxee 1.0, a new version of Boxee software that will initially be available only on the Boxee Box and will later roll out to Mac, PC and Linux.

If you are a Boxee fan and plan to be in NYC on 11.10.10 we would love to see you there. RSVP HERE. There will also be a live broadcast of the event on the Internets. More details to come.

  1. Absolutely exciting!!

Cannot wait to get the box (and remote) great job guys!!

  2. Luke Wood says:

YES! I had a feeling today was going to be a good day, and I was wrong…it's a great day! I'm not going to lie, I was nervous about it coming out on time, but you guys did it. Well done Avner and squad!

  3. Tom Bnge says:

I haven't seen any mention of Netflix on the Box. So I assume that didn't make it in?

  4. hd_fan says:

Can't wait! Only one thing left to do… announce Netflix! After playing with the terrific Netflix implementation on the PS3 a 2 days ago, the bar has been raised.

    • Denis says:

I agree,, Boxee box needs Netflix..

If there's no Netflix, i'll just stick with my ps3.

    • avner ronen says:

I am very much in agreement. Netflix is great on the computer, and they are making it even better on connected devices.

      • David says:

So it sounds like Netflix is totally up in the air. I have been following the boxee box since it was announced, but my purchase hinges on netflix support. Can you tell us a little more about why this might not happen? Hardware? Legal?

  5. Pierce says:

I am disapointed at the boxee selling in the UK for £200 while it sells in the usa for $200 which is £129 after conversion. Adding on tax its £150.The shipping and 230VAC adapter is hardly adding £50 to the product?

Either way I am delighted for boxee to be launching this product.

  6. Stuart says:

Yes!, even if the price is a little high in the UK still got mine pre ordered, cant wait

  7. Stephen says:

I just preordered mine yesterday! Is there any developement on the addition of Amazon Video on Demand? i remember you guys were thinking about creating your own store? maybe adding Vudu, they have some nice hi res movies. Anyways, cant wait and keep up the good work!

  8. David says:

What new features will be in Boxee 1.0? Is there a description of this anywhere? Looking forward to it!

  9. Mrrix32 says:

I'm used to certiain companies just replacing the $ sign with a £ sign for their conversions (Microsoft springs to mind). But really Boxee? I think I'll sit this one out.

    • avner ronen says:

sorry.. not in our control. we are working with D-Link to try and assure pricing is as consistent and as fair as possible, but it's a complicated topic, which we are just starting to understand ourselves.

  10. dbrenha says:

I'm from Portugal and haven't seen anything on the major stores. the portuguese dlink website has only 1 mention about boxee (dated 22nd of september) and it's just that it will come out.

  11. meilon says:

To sad, Amazon Germany still doesn't list the Boxee Box ;(

  12. Anders says:

I'm from Denmark which is one of the select european countries boxee will launch in. Where can I preorder from?

  13. Michael Ireland says:

    I'm quite excited!

Do we know if the Boxee Box will use HDMI-CEC yet?

  14. Zerkul175 says:

This are amazing news, cant wait to have that sexy box in my hands…

  15. Chad Calhoun says:

Awesome. Looking forward to getting one. Just curious though, what stores will you guys be distributed in?

  16. Matt Sloopka says:

AMAZING! Any word on when remote ships? And if you are worried about Netflix people, download Navi-X in the App Repos

  17. Mike says:

Really? No partnership details? How would i know I'm not buying a brick??

  18. Markus says:

    Hei!

I just pre-orderd my boxee-box from amazon.com, but i´m not sure to use the boxee-box in europe? What kind of power use the US-Boxee-box? Any informations?

    Thanks!
    Markus

  19. Parris says:

I know you have to be vague about any content partnerships and you hope to have any current content partners on the Boxee Box but is it safe to say that you hope to have an announcement of new content partners at the launch event on Nov 10th?

  20. Marie says:

Will the content partners be announced at the launch event, or before? Anxious for this bit of information…

    • andrew kippen says:

hope to have everyone that's on the platform on the Boxee Box; if they won't be there, we'll make an announcement in the coming weeks.

  21. egorgry says:

This is great news! I pre-ordered mine the day it became available. I'm so excited. Congrats to the boxee team.

  22. jmactacular says:

Okay, just ordered mine on Amazon, bought it on faith that it will have Netflix when it arrives. I really hope it does. I bought a Samsung TV last year that was advertised to include Netflix, but that never materialized. So, here's hoping for a better outcome with Boxee this time around! :)

  23. JacobH says:

Congrats on the upcoming launch. However, you do realize that if it doesn't come with Netflix and/or Hulu, that Amazon will be fielding a lot of returns?

Why can't Boxee Box fake the user agent string and Hulu would be none the wiser?

  24. Sam B says:

Sorry but I have nowhere to put that ridiculous thing. Is there a practical version available?

    • Pickle says:

"Sorry but I have nowhere to put that ridiculous thing. Is there a practical version available?"

Comments like this help absolutely nobody…not one person. The device itself is probably the most practical media streamer on the market…it can pull content from your LAN, scrapes content from countless Internet sources, streams Netflix, offers some great subscription services, and has hundreds of fabulous useful apps like Pandora and Facebook. If you have a beef with the device's appearance, place it out of site in a well ventilated area. Most interested users/customers find the design very refreshing and elegant, a nice departure from dull rectangular boxes.

To each their own…if you don't like the device nobody is forcing you to buy it. Lucky for you, the folks at Boxee have been gracious enough to provide the PC software completely free, a luxury the likes of Apple and Microsoft will never, ever succumb to.

    • avner ronen says:

it's pretty small. so it just needs a little bit of space. you can put behind something, since it's using RF (rather than IR) and does not require line of site.

we think it is beautiful and that you should put it on a small pedestal… :)

      • Mark Davis says:

I'm with you on it being ugly. luckily it's REALLY small and the remote is RF so it doesn't need line of site. I hide all my electronics inside a wooden radio cabinet you can easily hide yours behind your TV.

        • Bob A. says:

Ugly, I think it looks awesome!!!

          • Brad says:

I think the case provides neither form nor function. Hopefully it will be easy to crack open and somebody intelligent will provide a provide a proper rectangular box to swap out.

  25. Nebfire says:

OK, here's what I've found on the Netflix issue. I just got off the phone with Netflix and the customer service rep stated that Netflix is partnered with Boxee Box, and that Boxee Box will be supporting Netflix. However, support issues will be directed to Boxee Box since they are the ones supplying the Netflix app.

  26. Harry says:

    Hi Andrew / Avner

I live in USA, and I have already ordered boxee box. I am planning to gift it to my brother who is living in India. I assume the box will support both European and USA power requirements ( 110-220 v)

  27. RAM says:

How can you call this a worldwide launch when it will not be launched in Asia :(

  28. jabby says:

Wait – so is or isn't Netflix going to be part of this? I want Netflix AND access to my personal library which is why I pre-ordered a Boxee box. Without that, I'm cancelling my order and going to go with one of the other devices that can satisfy that.

    • avner ronen says:

Netflix is an existing Boxee partner on the PC/Mac and our goal is to bring all the existing partners (and a few new ones) to the Boxee Box.

    • Mark Davis says:

Jabby don't cancel your order. Netflix business model depends on being on as many devices as they can. if you read between the lines Dlink wants to announce a bunch of content partnerships at launch for maximum press impact.

  29. Xphox says:

Okay so a lot has already been said, but I still want to say it anyways.

This unit is going to revolutionize your home media experience. I have been happy using Boxee software on my Windows box the last few months. After learning that it was based on XBMC which I've been using for years, why wouldn't you try it out?

My problem is that I didn't want to leave a powerful PC running 24×7, and my old xbox with XBMC just doesn't cut it for HD content. This small, fancy looking Boxee Box is the perfect solution to my problem.

Whomever decided to put a qwerty keypad on the backside of the remote deserves a promotion and a fat bonus! Then again for making it radio instead of IR.

If this hardware works as amazing as the software, then I know what everyone is getting for xmas.

Thanks Boxee Team ,much love from Canadaland.

    • avner ronen says:

Thanks! We are very excited about the hardware. We think the Intel Sodaville is a great platform for Boxee. It enables us to do HD video playback and run a full featured browser. Hope you will love it!

  30. Kain says:

I know you can't announce partners quite yet but can we confirm that it will have support for all the great local streaming options found in the PC version? Including the same file type support, multiple audio channels, and soft subtitles?

That's the major selling point for me. Love the fact that the PC software today can work with anything I throw at it. Unlike Windows Media Center (which is lovely but lacking in this regard).

    • avner ronen says:

We are spending lots of time on local/SMB/UPNP video playback. I think you'll be impressed, both in terms of codec support, quality and subtitle handling.

  31. Daz says:

This looks pretty good, although as others have said the UK price is somewhat high though that's to be expected as the norm these days.

I recently purchased a media player which is great for playing all my owned media and can stream from other devices on my network e.g. PC, but isn't able to stream directly from the Internet, so the Boxee Box gets +1 in that respect.

But I don't like streaming from my PC (due to noise, power consumption etc.) which is why all my content is on an internal HDD inside the media player. Now if the Boxee Box had the facility to install an internal HDD it would be perfect and I would be very tempted, but as it stands I think I'll stick with what I've got. I don't want unsightly external USB HDDs sitting next to it, nor do I have the room for them. Nor do I want to have to purchase a NAS. It's all just extra clutter in the limited space I have.

Maybe future models will allow the fitting of an internal HDD?

    • Jochen says:

You know, to a certain degree you contradict yourself. Fitting an HDD into the box would increase its noise dramatically. Especially right there in an environment where you don't want it, i.e. your living room or your bedroom. I think you're better of saving for a NAS, hiding it somewhere and streaming your content wirelessly or over ethernet then. That's the best way of keeping noisy HDDs out of the TV zone.

    • avner ronen says:

You can connect a drive using USB and play all the media from there. The Boxee Box can also act as an SBM/UPNP server, so you can see these files from other devices.

Future Boxee-based devices may offer integrated storage. The Boxee Box by D-Link is just the first device.

  32. James Fields says:

Hi – I pre-ordered from Amazon. The next day I got an email saying they will be shipping on November 17th. Any idea what that's about? If they aren't shipping until the day the box is available in stores, I'll just cancel and buy local and save a couple days waiting for it to arrive….thanks in advance for any information you might have on this.

    • avner ronen says:

You should probably contact Amazon with that question. For the unit that I ordered for my mom I got a delivery date of Nov 13th. Not sure how it is being handled, but I know some people got emails saying they'll get it as soon as Nov 11th.

    • Eric says:

Mine is between November 18-23rd and I ordered it the day it was available for preorder. I think it may have more to do with where you live. I'm coming from Southern California, so it looks we may be further from the shipping center. Who knows, but looking forward to receiving mine.

  33. Ramakrishnan Rajagop says:

    Hi Avner,

When do you think Boxee will have full fledged browser experience? I struggle with websites with login information to watch videos… is it doable with current version of Boxee?

    Congrats for shipping Boxee~!

  34. Chris Lloyd says:

Will the Boxee box be fully updateable? Will it get updates when the other versions do?

  35. Mark Davis says:

What's going to happen at the launch party? Will I be able to buy one there?

  36. Humberto says:

2 questions, Boxee Box could be modded? for example I will be able to install XBMC? and there will be some VPN support? Thanks

  37. jbrodack says:

When are you going to be announcing your content partners for the boxee box? It looks like a lot of people with myself included are looking for the final word on things like netflix and amazon vod support. These are things that the cheaper roku can do and would give it an edge to roku. It sounds like there is going to be even more content providers for the boxee box over the pc application but at the moment we're only left to guess about that.

I'm still looking to get a boxee box though. Seems to hit the sweet spot of more open and more content over cheaper roku and apple tv but more of a real tv suited interface than the more expensive logitech google tv plus a much better remote. I want access to all the letters but i don't want to hold a keyboard while sitting on my couch.

Boxee is getting everything else right just needs all the right content.

  38. Jason says:

    Hi Avner,

Is the webkit browser able to store at least few favorite URLs to avoid retyping ?

Best Wishes for Nov 10 launch :)

Someone tell me what are the advantages or disadvantages of buying boxee box over google TV Logitech Review???

  40. LittleMiss says:

Someone tell me the advantages or disadvantages of buying the boxee box over logitech Revue googleTv??

    • Desert Dingo says:

Hopefully, Avner or Andrew or a 'Boxee' person will address your 'several' requests and reply to you…in meantime here is my 'novice' thoughts. I have been following both systems, (same as you).

At present seems largely on price: Boxee $199.00, Logitech 'Revue' $299.00 + other option items. If you are a 'Dish' customer, they were offering 'Googletv' at $179.00.

Boxee recently announced a platform add-on for a 'web browser' that will get you easier to all internet sites,(as Google now does).

I had been leaning towards 'Googletv', but since I do not have satelitte or cable available,(I use over air HD antenna). The seamless comfort of running 'Google' for websites and TV programs and the 'price' I would have to pay, seems a moot point.

I have been running Boxee beta for several months, it gets you thru most it professes…but a bit of "cluckiness" and hard to find getting back to other info on site. Hopefully that will all be cleared up on the STB.

Bottom line for discussion: Lots of folks are waiting for the 'dust to settle' on pricing and how well each system will function. I think it fair to say PC to TV has been a longtime coming and the merge is a big step in the right direction. Pricing and positive working function will gain the majority of buyers.

Hope some of this helped you.

Please note: as I stated, I have only been doing PC for about 10 years. Switched to PC to TV 6 months ago, and enjoying it. I would never go back to 'cable-sat.' companies.

      • Jason says:

Google TV is for streaming content only plus managing DVR functionality with other traditional providers.

Boxee Box has strong local content playback support for all your local media (home network, external drive ) plus the streaming content options.

      • Mark Davis says:

this guy was a little underwhelmed with the current GTV interface.
        http://paidcontent.org/article/419-the-likely-win…

I expect GTV to get better. It's not a good solution for for folks with our needs. I don't have a DVR and I only get over the air broadcasts. If they made a GTV device with a built in DVR for a low price and free guide programming I would be interested, but the boxee ecosystem currently has the most content for people like us.

I woudl like to see GTV do well and give boxee a run for it's money. Competition is only good for the consumer.

  41. Paul B says:

I'm assuming Boxee Box will offer localised content providers (e.g. BBC iPlayer in the UK?). I live in the UK, and am just wondering if (aside from the power adapter) there's anything to stop me from bringing one back from the US — will I still be able to get the localised British content (i.e. is this just a software setting?). Thanks.

    • Jason says:

I believe the geographic restrictions and other controls imposed by the content provider are done at the server/provider side. Boxee Box has nothing to do with the gate keeping function. So the Boxee Box taken from US to UK should allow all content allowed to stream into UK.

  42. Kurt says:

    Avner -

It is a shame but Google TV is being blocked now by ABC, NBC, CBS and Hulu. I sure hope this does not happen to Boxee as a big advantage of Boxee is to have access to mainstream TV-based content. I sure hope you guys figure a way around this in your application. I am also a Netflix user, have pre-ordered, but am awaiting your annoucement. Having Netflix is key for Boxee to compete. Good luck with the launch.

  43. E says:

Any chance newegg will be carrying the boxee in November? I have a giftcard wating =)

    • avner ronen says:

i don't think D-Link has published the list of retail and e-tail partners, but i think you should be optimistic about putting your gift card into good use

  44. IBD says:

Just saw the CEO on CNBC. Sounds exciting!

  45. MrLindeman says:

A lot of talk of the pricetag difference between US and AU, I'm from Denmark and wondering why the Boxee Box, which cannot offer near as much online content here as in the US is priced at almost double?

    US: $199

    DK: $351 (at current conversionrate)

What the hell is the point is that?

And is it possible for me to use the US box in DK? Because then I'll just have someone bring one back for christmas.

I do realize that pricing might be D-Links headache, but since this product has Boxee all over it I think you need to get in there, because this just isn't right.

    • strerror says:

Why is it so hard for everyone here to understand that as the world is NOT one seemless global marketplace, there are price differences between countries for the same item. Firstly, it is D-link that are responsible for pricing and distribution, so the boxee guys can't answer all the questions. Even assuming they were the ones responsible, they are only going to tell you what they already have, that is that each country has different taxes, costs different amounts to ship products to and has different trade agreements. All of these things mean that prices for identical things vary around the world.

The reality is that if, like me, you live in one of the places which is significantly more expensive then other parts of the world, you'll simply order it from the other parts of the world yourself and have it shipped to you. What's so hard about that? The constant bleating about price differences is tiresome, do some reading about basic trade regulations and you'll understand why.

    • avner ronen says:

You can buy one in the US and bring it to Denmark. It will work.

We would love to have one (low) price available worldwide, but the reality of VATs, shipping costs, retail margin requirements, distribution partners requirements drive different prices in different countries. I still don't understand this world well enough and I understand your frustration.

  46. Joel says:

Preordered the first day available, but got an email the other day from Amazon stating that the estimated delivery date was Nov. 18th-24th…. what up wit dat? Could just cancel and and get it from the stores a day earlier…

  47. Arnold Waldstein says:

    Avner…

Really smart positioning here. Smart because it clarifies who you built the box for. That public info was not as obvious before.

If the other commenters haven't seen this….

    http://www.businessinsider.com/boxee-ceo-on-cable…

My offer to publish a Q & A on "Why Boxee" to my blog readers still holds when time allows.

    Congrats.

    • avner ronen says:

filled the answers to your questions. will send it over this weekend. sorry it took me so long.

      • Arnold Waldstein says:

        No problem…

You have a company to run and a TV industry to disintermediate…keeps one busy ;)

But honestly, I'm a fan and want to help get out to the world that doesn't read this blog the answer to the $1B question… "Why Boxee?" Seems like you have that nailed.

  48. PR says:

Could you please tell me what kind of plug the box have in amazon UK? For example: does it brings a plug that I can only use in UK or does it brings more than one plug so that the box can be used in countrys with differente kinds of plugs…
