We have a bunch of Boxee Box news today!
Pre-order now!
D-Link has signed up Amazon (US only) as exclusive pre-order partners for the Boxee Box. People who pre-order through Amazon in the US will receive their Boxee Box before it goes on sale anywhere else.
We think the Boxee Box is ideal for people who want to:
- Play what you normally watch on your computer (whether it is on the Internet or your home network) on their TV
- Tailor the Internet experience to a huge flat screen
- Do it in full HD, 1080p with 5.1 surround whenever possible
- Share the stuff you watch with your friends and see what they are watching
- Use a simple remote rather than a keyboard and mouse
If that is what you are looking to do on your TV then you will love the Boxee Box. It’s $199 and it’s available for pre-order now
UPDATE: you can now pre-order the Boxee Box in Canada through BestBuy.
International launch:
We have some good news for people who live in _______ (see list below)! D-Link has decided to go for an International launch rather than just release in the US.
Come this November the Boxee Box will be available in the following countries: the US, Canada, Australia and in Europe – Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
As soon as we have news regarding other countries we will let you know.
Intel Inside:
The Boxee Box has moved to a completely new platform, and is now based on the Intel Atom Processor (the Intel CE4100 system-on-a-chip codenamed “Sodaville”). This switch means that Boxee will be part of the Smart TV program that Intel is pushing and that will be heavily promoted this fall.
At CES we demoed a Boxee Box running on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform. We decided to make the switch to Intel earlier this year (which was a part of what delayed us from our earlier ‘Q2 launch date) to provide better support for high-profile h264, HD playback. There is plenty for us to do with Nvidia on the mobile front and future generations of Tegra are being designed to support a wide variety of video formats, so we are excited to be continuing our relationship in other ways.

The Boxee Box with Intel Inside supports full HD. 1080p, High Profile 4.1. And while the spec calls for 62.5Mbit/s, we have actually tested it in excess of 90Mbit/s (sorry, that’s the highest bitrate sample we could get our hands on). No sweat.
We’re at the Intel Developer Forum today showing off the new Boxee Box by D-Link so if you’re in the area, stop by and see us.

Will the Boxee Box (now with the Intel Inside) have any FAN? Or it will be zero noise?
it has a fan. it will be 0.00016 noise.
So that's mean it wont work in Kuwait .. I knew it !!
you can use it in Kuwait, but you won't be able to buy it there in November
Will the Boxee box play videofiles from . rar like the xbmc does?
Yes
Individuals designed for greatness are going to be tested and have to overcome obstacles whereas folks that are destined for mediocrity will have it effortless
thanks, but no thanks!
hdmi output only is bs. not buying a new tv no matter now much i want that damn rc.
let me know when you decide to add an s-video or component output.
we figured it's a deal breaker for some.
other devices running Boxee may offer additional outputs.
Does the box support netflix like the PC version does? Its cool that you are doing preorder through amazon. Maybe this will lead to partnering up for amazon vod on boxee?
We would love to offer both on the Box. Working to get all the content partners that are available on the PC to the Box as well, and new ones too.
We hope to make formal announcements towards the launch.
I can't believe there is no component video output. I am so disappointed. Does Boxee not realize that the people who are early adopters of IPTV and streaming content to one's TV (i.e. – the people who will buy the Boxee Box) were also the early adopters of HDTV technology? As such, many of us have HDTV's without HDMI inputs (as only component output existed back then).
As much as I love Boxee's interface on my HTPC, sorry Boxee, I'm not going to go out and spend $1,000-$1,500 on a new HDTV just so I can get HDMI inputs and use a Boxee Box. I'll stick to my WDTV and HTPC – both of which have component output.
We're still years aware from a time when inclusion of a component output becomes irrelevant and unnecessary on a Hi-Def video device. Boxee dropped the ball on this one.
We hope other device makers will offer additional inputs, or possibly D-Link with a different device.
We realize that HDMI-only makes the Box irrelevant for some.
Mark,
My intention is not to make you feel silly with this post, but I'm assuming that you have probably heard of a "hdmi to component" cable that I am guessing will solve this problem of yours…and for only about $16 bucks too. I've used this type of cable on multiple devices before and it worked flawlessly each time. I'm guessing it should work with the boxee box as well.
I hope i saved the day with this post. I was also kind enough to attach a link to a cable i found for sale to my name.
Toodles,
Jerry
there is no such thing as a component to hdmi, you cant go from analog to digital this way, as posted in the forums http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=12841&…
Not $16, I don't think, but look up HDFury, which will convert HDMI to component. Not cheap however!
Yes there is a "HDMI to Component" cable available for $12.89 from DekCell on Amazon.com. I know it's difficult for some to read and understand the OP, but the question is whether or not the Boxee Box can connect to a composite only TV. The answer is YES IT CAN with the addition of a "HDMI to Composite" cable.
puppetj – I have a analog coax VCR and a analog WII connected to a SONY HDTV Satellite Tuner. I connected to a HP HDMI Monitor using the DVI out on the SONY HDTV Satellite Tuner with a DVI to HDMI connector. The Stereo signal is RCA to mini-stereo. The picture looks as good as its ever gonna get.
"If there is a will, there is a way."
I have used Boxee, Twonkey, EyeConnect and PlayOn and I can say that the Boxee Box is the most exciting product this year. I stream Netflix, Youtube and MyBook Media Files to my TV via my LG BD-390 Blu-Ray Player. Problem is there is no keyboard support. It takes forever searching YouTube with the LG remote. The Boxee Box remote with full QWERTY keyboard is a welcomed alternative.
I'm buying my 70 year old parents one for Xmas.

Unfortunately I canceled my my boxee preorder and bought a Roku SD just for the simple reason the d link boxee box did not have composite output for my tv.
I'm ready to go out and by a HDTV. I have a 37" Sony TV and since I have Directv there was no rush to buy a HDTV… D link needs to add this option or it will hurt there sales.
I would like to pre-order a
boxee box WITH eSata.
USB is not sufficient for visitors bearing their own media.
While I agree with you that esata is much faster and preferable, it's fast enough for streaming video. since about 0-5% of users woudl use it and it would increase chipset costs it seems like a legit move to me.
we had to make tough choices regarding inputs/outputs. i like eSata, too, but it would have added costs and most likely would not be relevant for the great majority of users.
TVs without HDMI can use:
HDFury
or
MooMe Mux-HD
I live in the UK in summer and Spain in winter. Knowing how difficult it is to receive UK TV in Spain, will it be possible with the D-link Boxee? Please research you answer. In Spain I live 50k from Valencia and I require a SKY box with card and a 2.4 me. dish. I have tried the sling box on recommendation but this failed to work as did using a PC to stream programmes in.
Regards Terry
I am not familiar with what UK content is available only when you're trying to access it from Spain. In case the content you're interested is available than the other issue would be the bandwidth in your place in Spain (2Mb is kind of minimum)
"People who pre-order through Amazon in the US will receive their Boxee Box before it goes on sale anywhere else."
I live in the Netherlands. Is the Boxee Box from Amazon US exactly the same of will it be different (software/settings, etc.) from the one sold in Europe?
I'd like to get my hands on a Boxee Box as soon as possible
It will be the same in Europe and the US
Great! I'm gonna pre-order mine right now!
Will Boxee box have PROPER support for ASS subtitles? Not like all those other players which simply display unstyled text including comments etc.
We do support ASS subtitles. We don't support the most advanced features (like telling Boxee to show the subtitles on top rather than on the bottom, stuff like that).
Really would be a dual use purchase if it could boot to some external or replaceable internal media.
If it can not then this is simply a piece of junk.
If D-link would say one way or the other I could decide. Keeping this a secret seems to suggest a closed system.
what do you mean? will you be able to boot a different OS on the device?
It has to be able to boot to some other OS. If not this is junk. Too many other choices out there.
it will only run the Boxee software. anything else would mean some sort of hack.
Fantastic product and leading up to today's announcement was definitely going to get one of these on release date (despite already owning an Xtreamer). However when I went to Amazon.co.uk to pre-order I noticed a price difference of almost $110 USD between the US and the UK pricing! What's the story behind this Boxee/D-Link?
I would expect a price increase of $35 or so over the US price to account for 17.5% VAT in the UK, but what is the justification for the additional $75 USD on top of that? I personally have been promoting this product to friends and family however at the £199.99 price point I think it may struggle to sell in the UK…
Looking into it
Chris I agree this is totally outrageous and beyond the VAT uplift it's inexcusable that D-Link do this. I bet my mortgage nobody will provide a satisfactory answer to your question.
Will post as soon as I have more details
Hi. I am also keen to get an answer to the price disparity. I really want one but at 199 squids I'm not so keen.
Its apparently going for AUD$350! Not too impressed about that massive price increase from US$199, seeing our aussie dollar doesn't have much difference to the US…..
looking into the Australia pricing. talking about it with D-Link.
When Americans sing "God Bless America" they mean exactly that. But ONLY America ! Everything in the US is a fraction of what we pay in the UK. You seem to forget that we live in "Rip-off Britain" where anything you buy is dearer than anywhere else on earth. Just check out the prices of an iPad or iPhone in the US. Steve Jobs sees us coming, and we must have MUG written all over our faces.
For that reason I have and will never buy an Apple product.
Sadly it looks like I will not be buying D-Link products either.
I understand it's frustrating. I was born in Israel that suffers from a similar price bias.. I am not an expert on VAT and other related costs. We are talking with D-Link to make sure the Boxee Box is priced fairly wherever it is sold.
Please make sure you look at the Australian pricing, too. The recommended retail price here is AU$349, which is ~ 70% higher than the US price.
If we use a package forwarding company, we can easily get the boxxee box delivered for AU$249… so if we can do it as consumers, D-Link can do it as a company.
But the UK is so much better than the USA in many ways. I'm saying this as a US citizen who loves to holiday over in the UK. One day I hope to live there and get price gouged like you as well.
Sheldon
Any plans to release it in South Africa?
Please!!
If not, what's the best way for me to get my hands on one?
Not sure re the plans for South Africa. Best would be to get a friend from Europe or the US to get you one… or a good excuse to plan a vacation to NYC and grab one?
What about the power supply, is it 220v?
I guess I could use a mail forwarding service to get one (like MyUS or whatever) but I wanna be sure it'll work when it gets here.
Yes, it supports 220V
Very stupid last question from me, could I just buy an adapter so that the power cable from the US will be able to fit in my wall socket here in SA?
if boxee box works in south Africa then it should be working in Kuwait is well .. correct me if i am wrong !
Yes. It will work in Kuwait.
So just like all north American companies, you leave out Asia! I was foolish to have hoped against hope! Thanks guys. Now the electronics gray markets of Hong Kong, Thailand, China & India will have the upper hand. Will sell your product at premium prices without warranty till the product is finally launched and nobody buys it from the authorized retailers since they will already have it. Just see the iPhone, Apple TV sales figures in India & south east Asia & u will know!
I know D-Link are planning to launch in Asia as well. I am sorry it will not be available there from Day 1.
Will the same power-brick be capable of both 110volt and 220volt?
Yup. Same unit supports both.
Maybe I'm just not seeing it here, but I've pre ordered the boxee, but still can't find the actual release date.
Is there one?
Hi Avner,
When I installed new Boxee beta on my pc (windows xp) and first ran it it tells me my video memory is 128mb and I may experience problems running boxee. I noticed videos are choppy. Is there any way I can fix this?

Is it ever going to be available in Estonia?
Will HULU and or HULU Plus work on the Boxee Box?
On the FAQ on this website it says they do currently support Hulu. However they are not a partner to my knowledge so as in the past, Hulu may find a way of blocking the content at any time in the future. As such Hulu Plus would not work to my knowledge.
Just purchased my Boxee Box after at disappointing announcement by Apple. Their lack of 1080p was the final nail.
I have a question, is it true Boxee Box will ship with a brand new interface (other than the one shown in current screenshots)? If so, do you have any tidbits on what it will look like, or if it will have the modern polish of Apple's interfaces?
I'm really looking forward to the Boxee.
Can you tell me if I have a Boxee with a connected USB drive, will I be able to transfer files to that USB drive from my laptop using my wireless network? My wireless is not always fast enough for live streaming of movies, but if I could simply copy them to the Boxee's USB and watch them later that would be great.
The price of the boxee in France?
know that apple tV is has 119€
Thank you
will the boxee software stay public when the box released? can we expect more updates for the software soon?
greetz
I've tried to pre-order the box, and im living in Denmark. But amazons answer was that it was only possible to order if you were living in US. I tried yesterday.
Any one who can tell me when it is possible?
right now pre-orders are available in the US and Canada, but not yet in Denmark. will announce once we have more info.
There several mail forwarding services that you can use. Just google.
Audio Obsessed Questions
I am a big fan of HDMI… one cable for everything, right?
I currently run my HTPC into my AVR, then to my HDTV.
What audio formats will the Boxee Box support on HDMI?
Dolby and DTS? How about 8 channel LPCM?
Does the Intel chip provide some new HDMI audio features?
Dolby yes, DTS yes. LPCM don't know. Not as big as obsessed about audio as you
asking the engineers
Can anyone confirm with 100% certainty, that if you point the Boxee Box to a directory of unaltered Blu-Ray ISO files (created by AnyDVD HD), that it will play them in the CORRECT chapter order? (i.e. NOT the first chapter in the structure, nor the biggest).
I would love to see the Boxee Box QA guys create a BD ISO of Gladiator Sapphire Edition, and play it to see if it starts with the first scene of the movie correctly, or if it plays one of the extended (added) scenes that they apparently placed at the top of the structure?
I am totally fine with no menus (for now at least) if at least the proper chapters play in the proper order.
thanks so much,
Brian
Avner? Any way for your QA guys to confirm this? There's tons of Blu-Ray movies that have the extended scenes added in the top of the structure. Gladiator is the one I am certain of though.
Thanks!
Brian
Can anyone comment on whether you can connect a powered USB hub to connect more than two usb drives to the device?
I have read and re-read to find the statement on type of internet connection.
I assume it requires high speed/broadband connection?
if you want to stream high quality videos from the Internet you'll need a broadband connection. You can use Boxee to stream videos in your home network, too.
What about the ability to attach built in Hard Drive?
You really should consider it.
there's not enough room in the box for a drive, but you can attach an external drive easily. other Boxee devices may support such a setup.
I see.
I'll wait for them.
I don't like streaming over the net, it doesn't work well with high bit rate HD content.
Connecting USB device means more wires more space which contradicts the All in One Media device.
Hopefully we'll have those with optional built driver soon.
Thanks.
Boxee Box $349 in Australia… Holy crap that's a markup given $1AUD = $0.95USD… given that and adding 10% GST to the $199USD price tag weighs it in at $229AUD. We're used to paying more but ouch…! Apple TV retails for $99USD and $129AUD respectively and the Boxee Box $199USD and $349AUD. Nearly double, that hurts the old wallet.
I am looking into it. No idea why there is such a price difference.
Any further info on the price difference for Australia?
not, yet. sorry. looking into it.
Can I ask how the Boxee Box will deal with LOTS of video files. I have about a thousand movies. With thumbnailing / caching how will the Boxee Box cope?
Also, is there any way to use a list view, instead of thumbnails? Scrolling through pages of thumbnails and having to wait? would get annoying.
Any will anime scraping be added? Is there support for addition of custom scrapers?
which source of Anime?
do you mean users adding scrapers?
Sorry my English was bad. I should have asked, will there be an anime category (similar to the TV Shows / Movie categories that already exist) and if so, will there be support for user added scrapers? I just pre-ordered one based on your replies previously, so thanks!
yes. there is a List View that you can use to navigate really long lists.
it will cope. we have thousands of videos, too!
Thanks for ur conformation on Kuwait .. I only have one question left .. Will it be able to support Arabic subtitles ?
Yes. Boxee supports subtitles in Arabic.
Ops .. !
It seems there is a problem here .. according to the FAQ section on your website the TV shows will play only if content providers dont block access to their content from outside their region this has to do with distribution rights in different parts of the world and the only way to find out is by accessing their website and see if it works …
Unfortunately I tried Hulu and Netflix here in Kuwait and both are blocked not only to my region but to all the world except the 50 United States or Washington, D.C ( I dont know about Canada ) .. The only way to solve this is by installing a proxy software to the Boxee Box which I think this wont happened .
Same as Apple TV .. It wont work outside the States .
sorry for the confusion. the FAQ is correct. content will only play according to the geo restrictions imposed by the content owner. it is not something we control or try to circumvent.
Salut imi place cum scrii vrei sa facem linkexchange cu siteul meu?
Two questions:
1. Now that Netflix has launched in Canada, can anyone confirm that Boxee Box will support Netlix.ca?
2. If I hook up an external HDD through USB to my Boxee Box, will I be able to see (and update files on) that HDD from a computer located elsewhere on my wireless network?
Very much appreciate the attention paid to the community by Boxee! thanks!
Preordered my Boxee Box from Best Buy (here in Canada). Today Netflix officially rolled out their service to Canada as well, and wondering if there has been confirmation that the Netflix Boxee app will run on the Boxee Box?
Want to use a Slingbox HD Pro to capture sports on Comcast from a remote site that has Comcast service then pull off the web using Boxee to feed my non-Comcast- available home with a Denon receiver which handles audio and splits video to overhead projector. (1) Any problem with Slingbox compatibility that you know of, and , (2) Any reason to think there would be geographic blackout once the signal is pulled off cable by Slingbox? Thanks
$349 in Australia???
Especially when it won't be able to play anything restricted to the US???
D-Link has missed the mark.
I'll be ordering mine from the USA!
what is the different from this product to the product it will come to switzerland?
or can i buy this und use so in switzerland?
same product. you can buy it anywhere and use it anywhere.
Thx much for your answer .)
then i will buy *g*
Does this Boxee Box 802.11n WLAN make use of MiMo (Multiple Input Multiple Output) multiple antennas / smart antenna array with spatial division multiplexing technology for WiFi to achieve the full wireless speeds that 802.11n is only capable of if MiMo is used?
What I am asking is what is the true maximum raw data rate throughput in reality of D-Link's Boxee Box? So not what 802.11n can do in theory, and the reason for asking is if you expect any problems with streaming full Blu-ray ISO's with very high-bitrate movies over WiFi without a normal house or apartment?
If the Boxee Box only have one antenna (without MiMo) then the the real world max is probably less then 150Mbit per second with perfect line of sight without any obstacles in the way, but what can quickly drop down to 54 Mbit/s if you do not have perfect line of sight without any obstacles in the way between the access point.
Even with MiMo the true speeds maximum is 144.4 Mbit/s for 20 MHz and 300 Mbit/s for 40 MHz raw data rate with perfect line of sight without any obstacles in the way.
Since Boxee SW just uses imdb data for scraping, I understand that several movies will fail during the scraping.
Do you provide support for users to edit the missing info ? I believe the Boxee SW cannot do this. So will Boxee Box also have the same limitation ?
Any plans for future software upgrades be add the feature to connect a USB TV-tuner for terrestrial free over-the-air and Live-TV broadcast receiving capability and PVR functionality similar to Windows Media Center or MediaPortal?
For example Hauppauge just announced their new PCTV nanostick T2 290 set for release now in October which is capable of receiving Freeview HD (DVB-T2) MPEG4-AVC channels and is backwards compatible with the old Freeview (DVB-T) MPEG4-ASP standard as well.
Maybe Boxee could open talks with Hauppauge for them to ODM this USB TV-tuner for D-Link and others to OEM it as an accessory for the Boxee Box?
Since Hauppauge purchased Pinnacle PCTV product line of TV-Tuners products for PC from AVID Technology they are really become the only manufacturer to count on in their area today and they are already the leader in embedded TV receivers used by worldwide PC OEMs.
Hi Avner
You guys are doing a great job. I've been using the awesomeness ever since it was XBMP, and I've enjoyed watching it evolve over the years. It's pretty cool to see a hardware device made specifically for Boxee, and I love the shape!
Will the 10/100 be ok for the higher bitrate mkvs?
Thanks!
No Netflix on the boxee box?
No boxee box for me until it gets netflix.
What do you mean? Login and click services, and enter your netflix login.
Hi I live in Chile its work here?
