Earlier this week we got confirmation that the Boxee Box by D-Link will ship this November in US and Canada. We realize many of you have waited months to purchase the Boxee Box, and we know how frustrating this is. Believe us when we say that both Boxee & D-Link want to start selling Boxee Boxes yesterday.
The original plan was to have the Box out by the end of Q2 (i.e. just about now), but that time-frame proved overly ambitious.
Our vision is to make the Boxee experience on a set top box as good as (and where we can, better than) the one you already know on a PC. The goal is to play HD videos from the web or a local network in 1080p and use hardware acceleration whenever possible. And to provide a TV browser experience that can handle almost everything you throw at it, including Flash 10.1. Not to mention making all this happen for an affordable price and on a quiet device that will not feel obsolete 12 months after you buy it.
We are looking forward to the November launch with D-Link and believe it will deliver a user experience that sets the standard for accessing stuff from the Internet and from your home network on your TV.
Moving forward we want to keep you up to date so we will share progress via Boxee’s Development Blog and the Boxee Box by D-Link Fan Page on Facebook.
In the meantime, it feels good to have a date set for the release of the Boxee Box, and we can’t wait to get it to you.

It is a shame it is so delayed.
I have been desperate for this for so long, and without a firm UK date or price I may have to bite the bullet, get a second mortgage and buy a new unibody mac mini and be done with it.
It is such a shame that it was announced so far ahead of the product cycle. Boxee should take a leaf out of Mr Job's book.
I guess we will realistically be looking at a year before it turns up in Europe and in this market that is a lifetime.
It makes me sad.
Don't buy a mac mini. Just get the Acer Aspire Revo. It works really well and is half the price. It's pretty tiny too.
The Acer Aspire Revo is not powerful enough to run Boxee smoothly. Trust me, I have one and have tried everything to get it to work right. Streaming video from the internet is choppy. Spend the money on a mac mini.
Europe should not be too long after the US launch. D-Link is pushing real hard to get it out in additional markets. We're going to do the work to bring in more European content in order to support it.
I am really impressed with the amount of post you have replied to Avner. Your a total machine!
I have been checking out the Boxee Box for a while and be spreading the news to all my friends. If the price point remains around the 200 dollar mark (give or take) your going to have at least 10 sales in the frozen wasteland of Edmonton AB. That's like 2000 dollars wow hey? But seriously the everyone who I show Boxee to and then show the Box to loves the concept and wants one. I can't wait to have a set up that is more user friendly (I mean wife and kids friendly) Can't wait to get one.
thanks man! will tell D-Link to add 10 units for Edmonton to their global projections…
It really is a shame this was delayed so much. I've been without cable for 2 months now, waiting for the Boxee Box to arrive. Now I would have to wait until November? I'm not going 5 more months without TV. Unfortunately, I'll have to go another route and buy something else. I'm guessing a lot of people are going to be tired of waiting and will buy something else. That's a lot of lost money. Hope it all works out for Boxee in the end.
sorry for the delay. if you're very anxious to get a device then i would recommend an Acer Revo, which I think is a great PC coming at a great price.
I am a bit disappointed myself, but not because I have been waiting…more so because I know everyone else has including (and especially) Avner. Personally, rather than buying a competitor or using a Mac Mini, I went to a local school district and retrieved an elderly computer they were going to throw out and hooked up to my HD TV with a nice video card. I'm not kidding, most school districts don't have a decent outlet for outdated equipment… my Mom is a technology coordinator in a small district and they have had garage sales with $10 computers and nobody shows up. I got an old Dell GX280 with less than 60 hours of use on it, threw in a nice video card and MCE Remote, and viola! My own fake Boxee Box. I just threw it behind the TV stand and I use boxee all the time! This way, I could cancel my cable now and still have Boxee until the Box is released in the future. Good luck to all the programmers, content developers, and Avner & co in future endeavors!
thanks. looks like you got a great deal!! hope to make more content available for both the PC and the Box over the next few months.
Although I truly wanted this NOW I suppose waiting for the final is just the best choice. Will the remote be available earlier?
The remote and the box will come out at the same time. Initially we wanted the remote to come out first, but we ended up having a very close launch date for both.
I very enjoy understanding your article. Keep it up the good operate. But, I can not understand how to add your web site in my rss reader. Can you Assist me, please?
this sounds exciting, but will it work in Canada.
i mean will i be able to take it out of the bis and plug it in and no worries it will work, or will there be additional "work arounds" needed?
keep up the good work, I hope you guys will be in Canada soon
Paul
it will work in Canada, not special tweaks needed. we are working on getting access to much more Canadian content.
that is really great news!
looking forward to it big time!
Keep up the good work
Disappointed to hear of the delay, but I'll continue to wait. I've been excited about the Boxee Box since it was announced, and the size, features, and especially the QWERTY remote will hold me off from seeking an alternative. Good luck on hitting November!
thanks! we are going to make it by Nov.
I've been more disappointed in the terrible track record you (boxee) keep with your waiting customers. That alone tells me even when it comes out (November.. who knows..) afterward any hardware related issues will be promptly ignored just like we were for 6 months straight.
Would you be excited for a product that a company straight up ignored giving you ANY info on an obvious delay time in a 6 month period? Didn't think so.
Sorry to say but Boxee failed at keeping us (the patient and willing to buy) in the loop. Could be the greatest hardware/software in the world, if we don't trust you because of your actions, we aren't buying it.
Sorry for the delay and for not communicating it earlier. We didn't want to come out and announce it without have a firm launch date. In retrospect we probably should have been more communicative even if we didn't have definite news re a new date.
I'm also pretty bummed about the delay. I've been considering the TiVo Premier, but really want the Boxee Box instead. November is a long time to wait though.
Hope you'll be able to hold on and wait. We will do our best to make it worth your while.
Agree this is a real shame – don't suppose anyone from Boxee would care to respond to the article and comments on this here:

Mr. Ronen Let me ask you this. Why should I buy a Boxee Box instead of a Roku, Popbox or even a Google TV box? What are the Differences in your box compaired to these boxes that would make me buy a Boxee? I am new to this settop box game so I'm a newbie so sell me on your box. I'm not a programer so I don't make my own apps I'm just the average comsumer. I use Netflix alot so that is a must. One thing that is pushing me towards the Google TV Box is that I will be able to use the box as a DVR I haven't researched the pricing on it yet so I'm on the fence. I pay a extra monthly fee for my DVR and would like to get rid of that expence if the Google TV Box is just an upfront price I'm leaning towards that box. The Roku and Popbox are at a great price and will stream all types of web and network media.
So in conclusion Mr.Ronen SELL ME ON THE BOXEE BOX.
Hi Roger,
I'll do my best to sell you the Boxee Box
Probably the best sales pitch I could use is the current Boxee software that you can download for free to your PC/Mac. You can install it and play with it to get a feel for what the Boxee Box will enable you to do.
The Boxee Box will provide the same feature set and will look very much like the version that you can see on the PC. The difference is that it is coming on < $200 device and a great remote.
Boxee currently does not offer DVR functionality. If you'd like to use one product to access both the Internet and Cable/Sat I would recommend a TiVo device. They are still the best option when it comes to DVR and they are doing a good job in bringing more and more Internet content.
In case you are in the market for an Internet-only Box then I would recommend waiting for the Boxee Box…
You can see online demos of Popbox and Roku (both good products) and decide best on the experience that you find most compelling.
Hope this help.
Regards,
Avner
Mr. Ronen let me ask you this. Why should I buy a Boxee box instead of a Roku, Popbox or Google TV Box? What are the differences between your box and these boxes? I am just the average consumer not a programmer that makes his own apps. What will make me lean toward the Boxee, the Roku and Popbox are priced at a compettive price they will do the web content and stream network media both have wirless options. As for the Google TV Box I like this because of the DVR functionalty I can run my cable throught it and use that as a DVR and quit paying for my DVR rental. Now if the Google TV is just a out the door price I am stongly leaning towards that box. So Mr. Ronen SELL ME ON THE BOXEE BOX.
Thanks
R
opps sorry for the double post it didn't show the first time. you can delete this one.
I would say thumbs down for this product too:( Have been looking forward to a release very soon worldwide but must say that a release date even in Q1 or Q2 2011 is too late for me. Lots of things can happen on the market for these boxes and frankly I won't be waiting for this one. The software is great I still think so and I run it on my Win7 connected to my TV set using a Trust remote media control. It works and that's fine. Quite dissapointed.
May I suggest that the extra time is used to develop a small, inconspicuous vesa-mountable case, as an option for those of us who..well, you know.
Anyone know if you could plug a portable hard drive into the Boxee Box and then access it across a home network?
I am passing to share this news around my friends! thanks a lot
i to was one of the people who cancelled direct tv looking forward to boxee in july? aug? nope i have to wait till nov thats like half a year of waiting. Everyone in your dev team was very hush hush about it and tried to ignore our pleas. It seems once google tv was announced as a serious contender is when you finally gave a date of nov. At this point i am not pleased with your ignoring us for so long. Also theres rumors of google tv being based off android so whos to say there wont be a boxee app for it? tell me why i should buy this over google tv.
-=roy.
When can we expect it in Australia? Ant rough idea on price?
Hi, great news !
But, do you have some future plans for Brazil? As soon Boxee get on sale in USA, I'm going to import one!!!
