Boxee Box by D-Link Release Set for November in North America

Earlier this week we got confirmation that the Boxee Box by D-Link will ship this November in US and Canada. We realize many of you have waited months to purchase the Boxee Box, and we know how frustrating this is. Believe us when we say that both Boxee & D-Link want to start selling Boxee Boxes yesterday.

The original plan was to have the Box out by the end of Q2 (i.e. just about now), but that time-frame proved overly ambitious.

Our vision is to make the Boxee experience on a set top box as good as (and where we can, better than) the one you already know on a PC. The goal is to play HD videos from the web or a local network in 1080p and use hardware acceleration whenever possible. And to provide a TV browser experience that can handle almost everything you throw at it, including Flash 10.1. Not to mention making all this happen for an affordable price and on a quiet device that will not feel obsolete 12 months after you buy it.

We are looking forward to the  November launch with D-Link and believe it will deliver a user experience that sets the standard for accessing stuff from the Internet and from your home network on your TV.

Moving forward we want to keep you up to date so we will share progress via Boxee’s Development Blog and the Boxee Box by D-Link Fan Page on Facebook.
In the meantime, it feels good to have a date set for the release of the Boxee Box, and we can’t wait to get it to you.

  1. Scott says:

Great to hear progress on it. Waiting for a UK/Europe release date. :P

    • avner ronen says:

we don't have firm dates, yet. as soon as we do we will announce it

      • daniel says:

it's been so long since the last update that i thought that it would be released worldwide. I can't even begin to explain the frustration that is to see a gadget come out to US and only see it in europe several months after (still no nexus one from vodafone in portugal, waiting…).

      • Rui says:

Can we hope for it to be launched early 2011?

      • Itamar says:

יש תאריך ש-Boxee יצא בישראל? במיוחד שאתם ישראלים והכל, הייתי רוצה לנסות את הדבר הזה. במקרה ואינכם יודעים עברית:

Is there a date that Boxee will be released in Israel? Especially because you are Israelis and all, I would like to try this thing.

        • avner ronen says:

we don't have a date for Israel, yet. as you probably know Israel is selling its products in Israel, so it's not a question of "if", but rather "when". as soon as we'll have news we'll share them.

      • Rulo says:

Avner could you confirm that this delay is related to the Nvidia Tegra SOC…

    • Rumik says:

I too am waiting for a UK release, you have no idea how excited I am about Boxee Box… but I really want to know what the price will be like in the UK. If it's going to be over £200 and not out until next year then I'm tempted to just get a media centre pc and be done with it.

Can you give us any indication of the GBP price?

      Thanks

  2. Gandhi says:

Better late than ever! Marked on the calendar!

  3. Andrew c says:

Omg! I hope this is just a joke and it's releasing earlyier than that. My old xbox is about to give out.

  4. Bryan Lee says:

Would you trade in a Roku box for the Boxee Box?

  5. Nomaddna says:

Good post. Thanks for letting us know. We all look forward to the release.

  6. Ryan Knutson says:

Congrats on getting a release date set. I look forward to seeing if this is an option for……lets just say the less tech savvy in my extended family. Look forward to additional details. Any chance that remote comes out earlier?

  7. kodi says:

If you are shipping to Canada then I would hope there would be an increase in Can Con.

    Any updates on that?

Rogers just released their Rogers on demand on-line.

  8. iareronald says:

*thumbs down* i was really looking forward for a summer release "/

  9. Keith says:

Is Netflix confirmed for streaming on the Boxee Box?

  10. Chris says:

Is there a final price point? Also i love how Avner responds to every comment, it shows that he has a lot of passion for boxee.

  11. BDS369 says:

I've been so excited about this product since I first read about it… to hear this news is a huge buzzkill. Would you atleast share why it's being bumped? :(

  12. iscott says:

Why is the rest of the world treated like second class citizens on release dates on gadgets like this. It wins you no friends.

    • avner ronen says:

it is not second class. D-Link is a company with global distribution and they'd like to launch all across the world. we need to do some work to bring local content in every market they are in, so it will be a gradual launch outside the US.

  13. Ric says:

Will it be updatable if you find some bugs in the original shipped device?

    • avner ronen says:

sure. it comes with 100% bug guarantee (i.e. it’s guaranteed we’ll have bugs… :) ), but we are/will be committed to solving them and release updates.

      • mist4fun says:

LOL. Finally a developer admits this :) Looking forward to upgrading my xbox 1 w/ xbmc. Keep up the good work boxee team.

  14. K Swiss says:

I love the BOXEE BOX BY D-LINK! I also love Avner & Andrew. Wooo!

  15. Daniel says:

What about the remote? Is it delayed as well?

    • avner ronen says:

it will come out together with the box

      • fp says:

thought it was brought up before that it would be out prior to the box. and if its just the software holding it up… why the delay on the remote?

        • avner ronen says:

it's a combination of SW and HW delay. each has an impact on the other. we were aiming to release the remote even before the Box, but right now it seems we will have them both out at the same time.

          • Randy says:

will the remote be programmable with harmony (*logitech) (meaning, from the logitech website, we can download the codes the remote does and add it to our logitech harmony device?

    • avner ronen says:

remote will come out together with the Box. it will be included when people buy the Boxee Box, but will also be sold separately for people that want to use Boxee on their laptop/mac-min/etc. and still use the remote.

  16. Phil says:

Will there be any exclusive features that are only available on the Boxee Box? Or are all the features being synced across all platforms, where possible of course, for instance ATV can't do Netflix, we know.

Are there any plans to do upstream checkins on the development that you guys are doing in regards to browser based hardware acceleration with the XBMC folks?

    • avner ronen says:

we're aiming for feature parity with the computer version, but there may be stuff that it is possible to do only on the Box (for example, playing HD content from certain sources).

so we are not going to try to make something available on the Box only on purpose

  17. Drew says:

I'm sad that we won't see the Boxee Box this summer, but I'm happy if this is a firm release date. I'll wait, though. My mac mini is still chugging along.

Can you comment whether this is a hardware or software delay? When can we expect an release candidate? Before the hardware is available?

    • avner ronen says:

it is a combination of HW and SW issues we needed to address.

we won't have a HW RC before launching it, but in terms of feature set you should expect to see the same as what's available on the PC version at that time.

  18. jeff says:

I hate to bring this up because I am a huge fan of Boxee but isn't this dangerously close to when the Google TV is rumored to come out?

  19. frink says:

Thank you for the update, I look forward to hearing more about product development, features, and why I should continue to save my money for you. Please keep them coming.

  20. Rodalpho says:

Wow, that's a real shame. I'm sure you already know this, but the google TV devkits are going out in the next couple of weeks, they're already passing the FCC, and rumors are buzzing about a new appletv coming out soon running iphoneOS with its appstore and everything. The competition is likely to look very, very different in November. I wish you guys the best of luck, you're likely to need it.

    • avner ronen says:

the Connected TV space is indeed very competitive, but it is a huge market and we're just at the beginning. like with any other venture being lucky is important, but usually you have to work real hard to get lucky.. we'll do our best to bring out a product people will be excited about and will love using.

      • Rodalpho says:

If I were you guys, I'd be looking to get a googletv devkit and putting boxee out on google's appstore. The googletv is supposed to run nvidia tegra2 with android, and while I'm sure there will be some differences, it's at least the same platform and base OS as the boxee box.

Then again, upon reflection I'm confident you've all thought about about this stuff, have a devkit on the way, and have been discussing it in exhaustive depth on your internal wiki or mailing list or whatever ever since google's announcement but can't comment publicly. I imagine you're reading this and going "uh huh, obviously, we're not idiots, do you have a point?" so I'll stop right here.

      • Andreas says:

@Avner, it would be great of Boxee and D-Link also could sell a DevKit version of Boxee Box now already :) …niether the hardware nor the software has to be complete for a DevKit, and the DevKit version can even be more expensive, all it has to be is open so that the developers can access everything they need to develop apps and the code on it ;)

  21. joe says:

Do you have any information on hulu? will it work?

    • avner ronen says:

we have no idea. we see the rumors about Hulu on xbox, iPad, etc. as part of a subscription model, we hope that they are getting closer to finding a way to feel comfortable with having their content appear on TVs and other screens.

  22. Waiting an European Release Date too!

  23. val says:

Will I be able to delete my played network files from the boxee box? That's a feature I need.

    • avner ronen says:

right now we don't a File Manager feature and it is probably not be available when the Box launches. we believe for most people file management is still better addressed by using the computer rather than a TV interface

  24. Evan says:

This news is disappointing, but there is still life without boxee. I will continue to wait for it and in the meantime use boxee software on my main computer. Thanks for letting us know the status of boxee box.

  25. Andreas says:

Is there an RSS feed link for Boxee's Development Blog so that we CSN subscribe to those news as well in any RSS feeds reader?

  26. mluu510 says:

ouch, this will definitely hurt the boxee box. i was on the fence between the boxee box and popbox. now that it's delayed, i am going to keep my popbox. it's being released on july 4th.

  27. Rob says:

Avner: Lunch is on My Damn Channel. Anti-cynical, true thanks n respect for a big week to you and Andrew and all your humans.

  28. Why?! says:

OMG! why!? damn! you guys announced the boxee box way to early! Now everyone is getting frustrated about it.. Great marketing! Today i dropped my idea to buy that ultra delayed machine.. By the time it will be released the hardware is already out dated! *of to the hardware shop and fix my own Box…. XBMC box!

    • avner ronen says:

sorry about that and understand the frustration. we tried to be very upfront about the stuff we're working on (rather than announcing something only when its ready). it has the benefit of our users knowing what we're working on, the down side is that when stuff gets delayed people get frustrated.

  29. q says:

Sad news :( . Curious question though..

Will there be a public bate to test the dedicated boxee-box software?

Guess there are some barebone platfoms with the similair AMD / Terga specs.

  30. Todd Goldberg says:

Very disappointing. You all know this, hope you haven't lost your window of opportunity with so many other competitors like Google TV and a new Apple TV and so many devices with Netflix built in. If Boxee Box had come out by now as originally announced, I would have probably gotten one for Fathers Day &/or my Birthday in June. Now I probably won't wait, will probably by another Roku or XBox or other Netflix-compatible device or WD Live or something like that, or a Google or Apple Box if they come out soon. Maybe having a better/stable product will get more sales eventually but maybe the delay will be a serious problem. Good luck.

    • avner ronen says:

understand that it's hard to wait and that are alternatives in the market place. hope you'll get excited enough by the release of the Box to buy it once it comes out.. :)

  31. Rasmus A says:

If there is no release date in europe when you launch it in US, I might as well get it off eBay ;)

    • avner ronen says:

will try to launch Europe quickly after the US & Canada. as soon as we will have news we will post them here.

      • Maartenbeat says:

Why not release it in Europe first? D-link is German right… Shipping it to US and Canada is only wasting time for a quick release date ;-)

  32. Josh says:

Avner, thanks for the commentation – the sign of a good CEO.

Any word on how storage will be addressed? Will you have multiple models with different HD sizes or a removeable disk drive? I want to be able to download lots of torrents. :)

    • Rick Y. says:

IIUC, storage is via USB, so most/any drives will be supported.

    • avner ronen says:

thanks. no HD in the first model to come out. it assumes users will use directly attached storage (via USB) or network attached storage.

      • Josh says:

In future revs, it would be sweet to have a slot to slide an HD into, even at least for storage. Having a tethered USB HDD soils the otherwise incredible ID on the Boxee Box.

      • PlutoISaPlanet says:

You should really clarify you mean a Hard Drive here. In skimming through the comments this at first raised a huge WTF in thinking you were talking about high-def.

        • Spoony says:

Judging by the context of the reply, I think the acronym suited the original question.

  33. Rick Y. says:

Just to be sure – I mainly want this for wireless streaming (or playing off USB connected HD) uncompressed stereo 24/96 audio (out of optical out, into a high end audio DAC). I will of course use the HDMI for connected HDTV. I use an iMac OS X 10.4.11 … see any issues here? Would I have to get OS X 10.5 or .6? Thanks!

  34. Greg says:

Great, it's coming out in the US in november and no release date for Europe yet. Sorry guys, I'm buying something else.

    • avner ronen says:

where are you based? UK? we're going to try and launch in Europe/Asia as soon as we can, it is just that we can not confirm any dates (yet)

  35. Jonathon says:

Wow, I'm amazed by all the impatient people out there. Delays happen. Do you really want Boxee and D-Link to release a POS? It happens far too often in the corporate world, even after waiting for it (think windows vista as a prime example). I, for one, will continue to wait patiently. Good things come to those who wait.

    • avner ronen says:

thanks for understanding. we really wanted to get it out to users this month, but as you mentioned delays happen. we had to make a tough choice re sticking with the date and releasing something we didn't feel great about, or taking the extra time to get it right.

i think releasing a HW product is very different from releasing a web product. iteration is more difficult in HW and thus much more important to get a robust product from the first release.

    • PlutoISaPlanet says:

this sort of news is really only digested based on what you want out of the box. A lot of us are just after the box to play local content – something boxee does perfectly already – and aren't that concerned with things like distribution deals and regional content pushing back the product. If you want this device for the netflix, hulu, rev3, etc., feel free to wait. For those of us looking to replace a cumbersome HTPC, xbox or whatever… launch the box already. Once you get things in order: we know how to perform a firmware update just fine.

  36. Chris says:

Great, can't wait to sit around for 5/6 more months in the dark until you guys decide to bother to let us know it'll be delayed even further.

It's funny, leaving us completely in the dark for 6 months only built resentment with your core consumer. If you would have kept us up to date month by month nobody would be upset or even resentful.

    • avner ronen says:

sorry. i tend to agree that we should have handled it differently. the issue we had was that we didn't want to communicate the delay without having a firm date for the release, which took us longer to get than we originally thought.

      • MarkV says:

"Core consumer." What have you paid Avner and company? As much as they have put their life's work over this, "resentment" is a strong word for a mere consumer item. Resent a girl who dumped you or a professor who gave you an unfair grade.

So it's delayed. Big whoop. Should give you more time to enjoy life and other things instead of lambasting a fledgling company changing the game in the way we consume media. Have some perspective!

Good luck Avner & co. I too felt a little uncomfortable when I saw Google TV but I hope you guys get a bit of luck and a miracle come November.

  37. Patrick says:

Awesome. I am saddened too, but am willing to wait. I'm in the US and will be probably be buying it right away. Sorry for all the negativity from everyone. Thanks Avner for replying to comments and even more for being willing to make the hard decisions to release a quality product. This would've been 10 times worse if you had released it this month and it had been crap. Keep up the good work!

    • avner ronen says:

thanks for understanding. it was difficult decision for us, but i believe it was the right one. don't think you get a Mulligan on HW stuff.. :)

  38. Tamika says:

Will boxee box work with my hp mediasmart server (stream from it)? I have tons of movies on it.

  39. jamille says:

Thank you Avner for the update. I will wait for the Boxee Box

When you are as big and Steve Jobs and Bill Gates; I will remember these posts.

I thank you and the team for Boxee and wish you great success in all your projects.

  40. jamille says:

Avner; I meant to say when you are as famous and known as Mr. Jobs and Mr. Gates.

    (Sorry for double posting)

  41. Colin says:

BAH! I am starting to believe that this is nothing but vaporware. Two delays and now this. I've been waiting for this for a long time now and I now find out that it's not released in the US until at least November, and being in Europe I"ll have to wait even longer than that. Time to look for a new solution.

    • avner ronen says:

sorry for the delay, but i believe it was better to delay the release rather than put something out there that would have been half-baked on both HW & SW. understand if you can't wait for us.

  42. Congrats on the Release Date! Any news on EU Content Providers ?

    cheers from Rome.

  43. unclejerry says:

:( I wanted a Boxee but I gotsta get something soon… Maybe I can buy something to hold me over like a cheap little Asus or a WD

  44. michael says:

Been waiting a long time for this time happen!

  45. ryanc says:

How sure are we on the Boxee Box feature parity? I ask because one of the things that is keeping me waiting is knowing that the Boxee Box will be able to function as a front-end for my MythTV machine. If it won't, that pretty much makes up my mind for me. If it will, then the Boxee Box will the be only thing I'll need to connect to my TV — local HD OTH channels are being tuned/recorded by MythTV, streaming content from Boxee, and other media also in MythTV.

    thanks.

  46. JKxZ says:

I'm shocked that you have gotten this far. So congratulations. BIG CABLE has big changes coming with Boxee and Netflix and ever improving streaming video.

What hurdles do you see in the future? Obviously there is that whole "Hulu Subscription" issue. But what about other source issues? Do you see FOX/ABC/CBS/NBC blocking Boxee in the future once we go from "hobby" to "consumer electronic"?

I love running Boxee on my Mac Mini. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to start using Boxee NOW. I used the AppleTV version for a while, but performance was just too slow.

So everyone needs to stop complaining. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Boxee NOW if you are not a "cheap bastard". If you are, well then you wait. Simple as that.

This "ME RIGHT NOW" generation is starting to piss me off. They want everything on demand and free. Sorry kids, the world doesn't work that way. When you are a grown-up I hope you understand.

As for international distribution, it's not like you don't have to jump through many government agencies to get the device approved for sale. In the US alone you probably needed like what, 4 approvals? Multiply that by every country you want to distribute in…. that's one heck of a long list.

So again, keep on pace and keep us updated. Ignore all the whiney babies that can't have their way right this very instant or else "I'll throw a tantrum and threaten to use something else because it's here and your not and you don't care anyway because you suck and I'm going to tell my friends and they will listen and you won't amount to anything because you didn't make me happy right this instant." ;)

  47. Willie says:

Yep — this delay will kill the Boxee Box. Boxee itself will still survive, but the Box won't compete against Google TV. People will buy that instead.

  48. Silva says:

I would like to become a beta tester of the boxee box, can someone tell me how?
