Our Team Blog

NHL + Updated Beta

It’s springtime, and in the animal world that means it’s time to come out of hibernation,
time for leaves to grow back, and time for humans to start enjoying saturday afternoons at the ballpark.
It’s also time for us to release a fresh new version of Boxee for you.
First and foremost we’re excited to announce that NHL GameCenter LIVE is now available on Boxee.  Subscribers to the monthly/annual subscription service ($19.95 / $79 respectively) can now watch great Hockey fights & games in HD (where available) on Boxee.  With 2 of the major sports leagues under our belt (NHL & MLB), we now have our sights set on the next major sports network – The Golden Gate Park Lawn Bowling Association!  j/k
With the new application, users will be able to watch live games and archived games (48 hours after they air where available). We hope to add more of the advanced features in times for the 2010-2011 season.  Check out a few screenshots here. All games are subject to blackouts and other restrictions.
<—-BOXEE BETA UPDATE—->
In addition to this great new content partnership, we are also releasing the next version of the Boxee Beta, which now includes:
// File Identification Progress//
Easily see how many files Boxee is scanning, has identified, and doesn’t recognize
within your media collection.  Check the status from any menu sidebar
(TV shows, Movies, Music) or from the Media settings menu (Settings -> Media).
//Manual Movie & TV Show identification//
Help Boxee identify your personal media by telling it what’s in your collection.
To change incorrectly labeled files select the movie or TV show, then click the “drivers license with a circle in the top right corner”  icon on the right end of the pop-up menu.
Find and identify unresolved files by going to the “Files” menu, and selecting the “unresolved” folder from the bottom of the list.  Select files and follow the instructions above to label them properly.  You’ll now be able to put in movie names and TV show seasons and episodes to ensure your collection is pristine.
//Facebook & Twitter in your Boxee feed//
In addition to pushing out your recommendations to social networks, you can now also pull in recommendations from friends on Facebook & Twitter.  Shared videos appear automatically in your feed with an icon on the right to let you know where they are from.  Set up this new option from the web in your service settings for Facebook & Twitter.
//New & Improved RSS Management//
We’ve created a brand new way to manage, discover and play RSS feeds in Boxee.  First, check out the new management & discovery console on our website.  Search, arrange by category or sort through the most popular, top rated, new, and HD feeds available on Boxee.  Then use the RSS feeds App to play back your favorites. [to be released Monday]
//Bug Fixes and Fixes and Fixes, and Fixes!//
We’ve been able to address hundreds of bugs in this version of Boxee.
Thanks to everyone who helped us out by submitting issues to our support team.
<—-FRESH CONTENT—->
In case you’ve missed it, we’ve updated and added a few great new content partners to Boxee.
//Major League Baseball//
We’ve done a major update to this application, check it out here.
//Redux//
Think of Redux as a giant playlist of your friends favorite videos & music from the web.
Jump into the app, pick a channel and sit back and watch.  Get bored, switch to the next channel.  Redux has built the closest thing to channel surfing on Boxee we’ve seen… and it’s epic.
//Koldcast//
In the world of original web-based programming, KoldCast TV is one of web’s top destinations for great content.  If you’re looking for innovative, well-written TV shows that only appear online, Koldcast is the place to go.  Start with Tyranny and Blue Movies and go on from there…
//Funny or Die//
Whether it’s movies they’ve created exclusively for the site with stars like Will Ferrell,
and James Franco, stand up comedy from Zach Galifianakis and Demetri Martin, or user generated content, you can always find something to make you laugh at FunnyOrDie.  My current preference is Adult Reading Rainbow (I was in the room when LeVar saw this and even he laughed : )
Grab a gatorade and towel off, you’ve made it to the end. Kudos.

It’s springtime, and in the animal world that means it’s time to come out of hibernation, time for leaves to grow back, and time for humans to start enjoying saturday afternoons at the park and preparing for the Stanley Cup®.  It’s also time to update you on a fresh new version of Boxee.

    WooHoo! I hope the issues with ATI Radeons HD4200 have been worked out. I’ll check it out tonight!
    Keep your great work!

    • Mike says:

      What Ati 4200 issues are those? I ask as I own one and am on an earlier beta.

      • matt says:

        hmm, i also would like to know as that is my video as well.

        • Rulo says:

          My issue was that soft subs in MKV files where not available when using video acceleration in BOXEE with my HD4200 (AMD785G Chipset) they’ve fixed with this new release though. I’m able to bring subtitles up with DXVA working. Great!!
          Good job BOXEE, this release seems to be working a lot better (smoother) too.

      • Mike says:

        Just a followup, I’ve read issues with the ATI 4200 and Boxee when waking up from sleep. Searching in the forum happily doesn’t bring up much else in the way of the ATI 4200 and Boxee.

        • Rulo says:

          Another issue that I have just discovered with the Radeon HD4200 is that when changing audio streams in my MKV files the video speeds up and looses synchronization with the audio. I have to stop and come back again to fix it.

  2. Rick says:

    wow! huge improvements here, downloading now and can’t wait to play around. If boxee finally gets ALL of my media i may be able to drop xbmc and use boxee primarily. But where’s my option to shuffle all tv shows ala TV broadcast style?? ;-)

  3. Wow, this is great.

    I’m loving the progress that Boxee is making. I can’t wait to phase out my HTPC entirely and run with a Boxee Box.

  4. Manuel says:

    The download link is broken. It should be boxee.tv/download instead of boxee.tv/downloads. :-)

  5. Bryan says:

    “File Identification Progress” and “Manual Movie & TV Show identification”… Hallelujah!

    It was a huge pain not having these features. Thanks for the upgrade!

    • andrew kippen says:

      couldn’t agree with you more. happy to say they’ve even made the feature better with the ability to associate different files with one movie, and the option to specify Season & episode in a more intuitive way.

  6. Phil says:

    Really cool … will ESPN360 also get support, because in Europe we have to stream NHL via ESPN360

    • andrew kippen says:

      we’re taking one step at a time – best thing to do is send ESPN360 a note telling them to work with us : )

  7. Chris says:

    I love the improvements Boxee is making, but I am still not a fan of the design. The best part of Plex is the use of backgrounds/fan art and the 3rd party template system they have.

    Boxee works better, but Plex is far more beautiful especially with the Aeon theme.

  8. Andrew – I am looking for the “Go Habs Go” message woven into the blog post, but can’t seem to find it. What gives?

  9. Kyle Burckhard says:

    Wow, thanks for the update and thanks for supporting NHL game center, perfecting timing now that the playoffs have started. 4 games of hockey a day was killing my poor DVR.

  10. Peter P says:

    Wow guys, thanks so much for NHL support. This is a game changer for me.

  11. Corey says:

    WOW! Thank you so much for NHL Gamecenter integration. This will save me the pain of having to open up the web browser manually. I hope it all works in Linux!

  12. orthodoxdrew says:

    hi when is boxee box coming =]

  13. Eirik says:

    Are we gonna see something similar when the NFL season starts again?

    • andrew kippen says:

      we’re trying to work out partnerships with each of the leagues – best thing to do is write to them and tell them they should be on Boxee.

  14. jdog says:

    uh, hockey? really?

    how about NBA League Pass Broadband so we can watch all of those playoff games in Boxee? or even ESPN3 so we can watch some of the NBA playoff games and lots of European and interational football (er, soccer) matches?

  15. Mike Salisbury says:

    Any chance Boxee will support changing the settings via the web interface (or at least via webservices)? I’d like to be able to configure it and manage all of the manual show identification via my computer, not the 10 foot interface.

  16. Nichola says:

    Does one need to have a good B in the social sciences to manage a weblog like this?

  17. Devin says:

    If I subscribe now to NHL Gamecenter Live can I start watching the playoff games? Has anyone else signed up?

  18. tmorgan says:

    When is the boxee box coming out?

  19. Cho Yung says:

    Great, thanks for the update for information & thanks for NHL Gamecenter integration, really perfecting occasion now that the playoffs have started.

  20. Kacey Jone says:

    Any chance Boxee will support changing the settings via the web interface (or at least via webservices)? I’d like to be able to configure it and manage all of the manual show identification via my computer, not the 10 foot interface.

  21. Fiona Smithe says:

    Oh, really?

    how about NBA League Pass Broadband so we can watch all of those playoff games in Boxee? or even ESPN3 so we can watch some of the NBA playoff games and lots of European and interational football (er, soccer) matches?

  22. Kuroyume says:

    nice… just the features i’ve been missing… time to give boxee another try

  23. imrabti says:

    I hope the issue that I was having when searching a Subtitle, sometimes it give no result and the second or third time it load the subtitles.
    Also the was a Graphic glitches on the pane were the available subtitle are displayed.

    Hope All This problems are fixes,

    Boxeee Rockkkkkks !!!!!

  24. Jared says:

    I’m guessing with the replies already to people asking about ESPN3 and NBA/NFL streaming, the response for MLS Matchday streaming support would be to send them a note requesting they work with you guys as well to get an app out?

  25. alanxr says:

    Hi, I love boxee the new features are great! I have another question, Is there a chance for boxee to have proxy settings? It would be great since my Atv is behind one and it would be easier to change than changing this constantly in my laptop too.
    thanks!

  26. nsfw says:

    Now that the season is over, I’m pretty surprised the NHL still wants $79 for the rest of the season. By the time the second round of the playoffs are around, Versus will be able to show us almost every game in its entirely.

  27. Joram says:

    Fantastic update, especially regarding the more detailed information about scanning/missing resource information :)

    The only thing that’s been happening lately (with the 2 latest versions of Boxee) is that it tends to crash when I try to log out of Boxee. It doesn’t crash and stop, but rather it just stops responding as a whole. It’s on a Mac Mini 2Ghz-2GB ram-250GB HD with Snow Leopard (including all the updates).

    Also, in addition to the logout button, would it be possible to get a “turn off your Mac” button? I have Boxee setup to automatically start after turning on my Mac, but I have to remotely turn my Mac off since Boxee doesn’t support that (yet). That, and a bit more stability (that’s always a welcome one of course), are definately my only 2 desired updates… other than that it pretty much does whatever I want it to. Especially the “live” search and implementation of subtitles are an amazing feature! :)

  28. Damien says:

    Nice, except the new Boxee startup sound which is downright horrendous. The previous one was just fine…

  29. Glenn Strous says:

    This looks like it will be a very exciting race to the Cup. Like always, anything can happen come the finals!

  30. Ran says:

    Yoohooo thanks!

  31. tmorgan says:

    When the boxee box arrives, will it be able to stream my movie collection using the my movies software on my hp mediasmart server?

  32. Brad says:

    This is a great addition. Live sports are the only reason I still pay for any TV at all since I can get virtually any scripted shows on the net. I can actually get decent OTA reception so I can still get most of my local stuff as well.

    BTW – the picture you chose is interesting because it says Flyers-Devils and the picture is Panthers-Senators (I think that’s a Sens jersey)

  33. les says:

    I would like watching match via pc channel . Moreover, the brief match reports and betting tips can accompany it. Both are welcome. Some attack – defense development graphs like as scibet.com can strengthen the feelings

  34. Roman says:

    Andrew,
    RE: NHL Gamecenter – From the 2nd screenshot, it appears that you can see the scores of the completed game before you actually watch the game? Can someone confirm if that is the case or not? I would hate to have the result spoiled before i get to watch it!!

  35. XMBC User says:

    Wow, that’s great…I wonder if it streams as crappy as every other stream does in boxee?

  36. DavidJamesS says:

    Wonderful, awesome, and truly a game changer for me.

  37. Brad says:

    Way dissappointed! Why is every playoff game blacked out?!?!? What a waste of $20.
