Play Ball! New MLB.TV app arrives in time for the first pitch.

There’s nothing quite like sitting in a sunny stadium with a cold beer and a warm hot dog in your hand. Hearing the roar of the crowd as #2 hits it out of the park. Watching “The Wave” travel around the stadium with ever-increasing ferocity until you can’t stay seated. Enjoying the jumbotron cameraman do his best to find funny-looking kids and good-looking women.  For millions, today marks the re-convening of these time honored traditions as Major League Baseball (MLB) begins it’s 141st season.

While Boxee users have been able to watch MLB.TV games since June, we decided it was time to give the app a makeover.  We traded avant-garde stylings for a traditional baseball scoreboard look that makes it easy to see how your favorite teams are doing.  Decide how you want to watch the game in normal or “your buddies will never believe this is streaming from the Internet” HD quality (where available).  We also threw in a little special sauce to ensure that Boxee users have the option to stream the audio of blacked out games.

Standings

To enjoy the first pitch of the season on Boxee:

  • download the early release version of Boxee (official version to come in the next few weeks)
    • LINUX users – we’re adding experimental support for MLB.TV on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
  • sign up for MLB.TV or MLB.TV Premium
    • this gets you access to MLB.TV on Boxee + on the web
    • it also includes impressive in-game DVR functionality & multi-game view (quad view, picture-in-picture, split screen)
  • put your hands over your hearts and get ready to sing the national anthem
  • prepare your favorite queso dip (mine’s with pork sausage, velveeta, rotel, and cream of mushroom soup)

and… Play Ball!

  1. Jordon says:

Any way to switch to the bottom or top of an inning (like the web-based MLB.TV player can do)?

  2. Ryan says:

So this will not be working with appletv? I can not find an early version for the appletv.

  3. Nick Hart says:

Same question. I can't get it to load on my AppleTV. HELP!!!

  4. IMC says:

Me three–Boxee on Apple TV is saying I need to update to the latest version of Boxee, but the new download page doesn't list Apple TV as an option…

MLB.tv is the only reason I have Boxee on my Apple TV.

  5. andrew kippen says:

You'll need to install the early release version onto your AppleTV using SSH – working to find you a good walkthrough now.

  6. IMC says:

Thanks Andrew, no rush for me–Opening Day is blacked out anyway, as I found when I loaded Boxee onto my macbook.

  7. Matthew says:

So I load up the mlb.tv app and when I click on the Yankees vs. Red Sox game and the YES feed it says you must own mlb.tv to use, sign up at boxee.tv/mlbtv or something like that. I have an account and have signed in…what's the issue

  8. Phil says:

What IS the required version for AppleTV? I believe Boxee, when enabled by ATVFlash, has access to the latest alpha and beta versions (?)

  9. IMC says:

So I take it that this updated version of the app has killed access through Apple TV?

  10. ADave says:

Hi guys. Here is a guide to upgrade your ATV to the latest early release. I did it to get MLB.TV working and everything went smoothly. Let me know if you have any questions.

    http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=95139

P.S. When you download the early release DMG, leave the filename as is and just substitute in the new 21.11421 for the YY.XXXXX.

  11. marcel says:

The latest version is now available on the AppleTV just browse to the AppleTV Menu >Launcher >Downloads > Boxee early access 0.9.21.11421

  12. Andy says:

Thank you so much for clearing this up….was wondering for two days why I couldn't get MLB.TV to work!

  13. SteveB says:

Any chance we could get the "see 4 games at the same time feature" that mlb web app has? Was hoping to use boxee for mlb.tv but it looks like it doesn't quite have the feature set that I was hoping for yet. Any impending updates re:this?

  14. NickH says:

Right now only the full archived games are available in the Boxee app. Any chance you can add the highlights and the condensed games?

Also, as Jordan asked, any chance you can add the "jump to an inning feature"?

Thanks though, app is a massive improvement on last year's version.

  15. IMC says:

Managed to get it working just in time tonight, but then the app flaked out after 2 hours/5 innings… I was pleasantly surprised at the video quality and I'm hoping to get it working again soon.

  16. shawn rieger says:

Hey guys, just wanted to respond to a few questions here. We hope to implement a few new features with the next boxee version (not current version we are working on getting out now) – this includes resuming from last position and jumping into any inning available (live or archived) – I cannot comment at this time regarding a specific timeline for a future release, stay tuned to the forums and boxee blog as we will let you guys know.

Condensed game video highlights we would love to add. Working with mlb to get everything possible, but we want to nail down what we have currently before we start bloating it with features. Stay tuned!

As for the issue IMC is having with boxee or app crashing after a few hours, this is something we are becoming more aware of and we are working on nailing down the source of the problem. Did you leave boxee unattended during this time and come back to find it had crashed? Would love if you could grab all that info from the crash (if it happens again) and post on boxee.jira.tv

Matthew, the issue you are having with the 'you must own mlb.tv' means your account type is not authorized to view that specific feed. This was actually a mistake on our end allowing inmarket feeds to display in the app. This is since been removed and you shouldn't see this message anymore, if you do then check your mlb.tv account and if thats ok but message continues please let us know via jira.boxee.tv

As a general notice. The streams can tend to get a bit 'pixelated' at times and you may see some games that when live were1280x720 but once they get archived the streams are 800×450. These are known issues with the mlb streams/service. We are working closely with the mlb.tv team and we can assure you they have been working like madmen to correct all these issues.

Hope that helps clear a few things up,

    Shawn Rieger (@boxee_api, @shawnrieger)

  17. David says:

    Feature Request.

Even with the spoiler turned off, extra inning games show as "Final /10".

Is there anyway to not give away the fact that it went extra innings with spoilers off ??

    Thanks guys, loving Boxee.

    • shawn rieger says:

Yes, I am working on a small update now and plan to release a new version of the app with a few fixes including this one in a day or two.

      Thanks,

      Shawn

  18. fabio says:

    Dear Boxee Team,

I must say: "Great Job!!!" with this app.

I watch games on the next day because I'm in th UK and last year there was spoiler everywhere, now it's all gone.

The results are not shown, the remaining time is hidden, I can choose the resolution and all with my remote control.

    I'm super happy!!!

Thank'you very very much for that.

  19. IMC says:

No, I didn't leave it unattended–I was watching Sox-Yankees, and it just froze at almost exactly 2 hours into the game.

  20. dan1son says:

New app layout is great. Works well.

That said… can't wait for the streams to get fixed. I'm getting 800×448 max on live games now, and they are BLOCKY. :)

Although based on my history with mlb.tv (4 years or so now) this is almost always the case the first couple of weeks.

  21. Bert says:

I'm still getting the must own mlb.tv to use, sign up at boxee.tv/mlbtv error?

I own MLB.tv and had to watch last night's Cardinals game through Firefox. How do I get it to run through Boxee?

    • shawn rieger says:

The message your receiving is technically not an error. When you see that message what happens is boxee goes out and tells mlb that your users account wishes to play that particular game feed, in this case mlb.tv send back a response saying your particular account was not authorized to play that feed.

Do you have an MLB.TV Regular account? Which feed where you attempting to play from Boxee, home or away?

  22. F Was says:

Hey thanks for the app, one problem I seem to have with all the games is audio skipping. The announcers will repeat the same word 2 or 3 times and then move on. Anyone else have that prob?

  23. Ryan says:

I sure wish the same thing was available for the NFL. That'd be a killer app if I ever saw one. DirecTv has the streaming rights through 2014 and currently plan to offer the service in some form by 2012.

Can you please work with them to advance an HD Boxee/broadband version of the Sunday Ticket?? I'm certain there are millions of us who can't get dishes installed on our apartment buildings who would pay full price for the service.

  24. F Was says:

No problem with shoutcast video streams, just get the skipping when watching the ballgames

  25. angkasuwan says:

maybe i'll watch more baseball now

  26. tondoleo says:

I am using the app with my apple tv. For some reason there is a green tint. It is like watching the spawn of the Hulk and Margaret Hamilton play baseball. I only have this problem when running boxee on the ATV. Do you have any suggestions?

  27. John says:

This is great. This app is the only reason I bought a appletv, and I've waited months for the chance to see it in action. Impressed!

In the post above there is a mention about audio feeds, how do you access those when the video is blacked out?

Also, any hope of getting the HD streams on the ATV (broadcom, maybe :) )

  28. greg says:

can someone give me a walk through on how to get boxee to play mlb.tv

i have just installed boxee on my mac, but i cant find any instructions on how to get it to play.

    any help is appreciated.

  29. Elisha says:

Why is today's Yankee game unavailable?

  30. pruemmler says:

I am trying to view the dodger/diamond back game on april 14 with the boxee app and the game will not start. Th game does play with adobe flash in firefox.

    • shawn rieger says:

The game is still live, are you blacked out? Are you getting a message? I'm able to play both home and away feeds so any more details could help.

      • pruemmler says:

Since I am able to view the game with firefox, I am not blocked out. The screen says the game will start shortly but stays there forever. I was able to watch yesterdays prime feed live on boxee. The picture is much better on boxee, too dark on firefox. For some reason boxee won't play the live game for me.

        • shawn rieger says:

if you choose start from the beginning, and boxee didn't get a proper response from mlb they we wouldn't know the correct start time. When this happens we have to start from the beginning of the feed (which can but up to and over an hour in some cases, 'game will begin shortly')

If the boxee player launched and you where able to see this 'begin shortly' screen then the stream is working, you'll have to keep seeking forward until you see the game start. Its an unfortunate issue that we have no control over.

  31. Dave says:

Anyone having an issue with the game looking like it is in slow motion and audio cut out on the ATV? I thought it was my internet speed so I upgraded to the 20 mbps service but still seeing the same issues.

  32. Steven says:

So sad, fired up boxee to watch some baseball, but it doesn't work for Ubuntu. :'-(

Let me get this straight, as soon as 10.04 comes out this will work?
