Get a bite of this – Boxee Beta on AppleTV

Last week, shortly after Avner’s post on the updated Beta version and the unfortunate lack of AppleTV support (unless you have your SSH teeth fully grown in), the powers that be resurrected the atvusb-creator for Mac.

Yep. You can now, once more, pwn your AppleTV following these super simple instructions, and get the Boxee Beta on that shiny Apple box. In fact, if you already have Boxee Alpha installed, you should be able to just update Launcher and then update Boxee to achieve the same result :)

Kudos to JimWiley and hillbilly1980 from the Boxee forum for making the original update script, and Amet, davilla and stephan.diederich from Team XBMC and atvusb-creator for fixing the Launcher, SoftwareMenu and the Creator itself, permitting this goodness.

Enjoy, and let these guys know you appreciate their efforts by commenting below and/or here.

** Installing Boxee on your AppleTV simply adds a Boxee option to the main AppleTV menu.  Previous AppleTV functionality remains in tact.

Great news! We were all waiting for it :) Now… does it support the Crystal HD card? http://xbmc.org/davilla/2009/12/29/broadcom-crystal-hd-its-magic/

  2. ejc says:

    Sweet! Finally!

  3. malik says:

this makes me even more hungry for an appletv!

    • Tony Bullard says:

Don’t get one. I have one, with The Beta on it, and it’s very disappointing. Unless you’re really tied into the iTunes universe, it’s a very disappointing player. Even with Boxee on there, the performance isn’t great on a lot of online video, and it’s just a big disappointment.

I’d go for something with some more oomph under the hood.

    • DPK says:

Don’t get an AppleTV, they don’t have good hardware specs. It’s like pouring your money down the drain.

  4. Irving Isler says:

Just upgraded two nights ago and the Beta is very nice on the Apple TV. Much smoother, no lag, and really visually stunning. A huge improvement in every way.

Not a day goes by that we don’t use Boxee.

  5. Luke says:

    Great news!
I already had it installed via ssh but it didn’t seem to be running too smoothely…
The new Interface really is quite an upgrade comparrd to the alpha version!
Thanks again for the incredible work on this – love it!

  6. Jeffred says:

Honestly I ditched cable TV a year ago, bought an AppleTV, hacked it with Boxee, and I’m never going back to paying those outrageous cable fees. I have not missed a single one of my favorite programs since the switch.

  7. John says:

Kudos to Jim and Hillbilly for all their effort on this.

Boxee Team: FINALLY, some headlines regarding AppleTV. Let’s try to keep the very large AppleTV/Boxee userbase in the loop.

Love using Boxee on my AppleTV.

  8. Xavier L says:

    THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Kudos to you guys!

  9. KJ says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  10. Brice187 says:

Would love to see ChrystalHD on Boxee!

  11. jgbiggs says:

was the patchstick update for the windows version as well?

  12. russdogg says:

Oh man, i can’t wait to get home and install! This seriously made my day.

    • JM says:

Drat, why couldn’t I have seen this 2 hours ago before coming in to work. Can’t wait to get home tonight…

  13. Donald says:

Does Netflix work on the Apple TV Boxee Beta?

  14. Mefisto says:

Will it run H.264 and x264 without buffering now ? Heard that the problem is the Power of the AppleTV but perhaps it is running better on beta.

    • Tom Sella says:

It is improved, but there is an inherent limitation on the platform given that we do not have access to the proprietary hardware accelerated codecs Apple uses.

  15. I’ve been running it since the day after it launched. Its pretty but still a bit buggy and sort of doggish (heavy) compared to XBMC whos new UI is pretty also. The thumbnail things is still causing crashes. I’d like to install a SSD and try it out. I think there will need to be a dedicated boxee lite version for the ATV.

  16. Tim says:

Thanks for the hard work. You guys got a lot of flak for not seeming to commit to the ATV but I’m so glad you did!

CrystalHD support in the future would be saucy!

  17. Win! Now I _really_ have to convince my wife to let me install it….

  18. Shockdude says:

When i click on apple tv to download the beta file it takes me to the support forum… can some one please help and direct me to a proper download link. Thanks

    • Tom Sella says:

On that support page there are instructions for getting the ATVUSB-Creator to make a patchstick, which in turn can be used to install Boxee.

  19. Flyersny81 says:

Yes yes yes!!!! Can’t wait to get home and install this bad boy!!

  20. Jordon says:

Wasn’t their Flash in the Alpha? Was that disabled for the Beta on AppleTV? I keep getting a “Flash Not Installed” message when trying to access Hulu, Network sites, etc.

    • marcel says:

If you went to Launcher –> Downloads and installed the Boxee Beta the installer should install the flash please try again to and install the Boxee beta for more information on what is installed check out this thread http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=14664

    • vynsynt says:

in order to install flash you’ll need to ssh into ATV and follow the instructions listed here:
      http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=14664
      Good luck!

      • marcel says:

        This thread is quicker …http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=89760&postcount=16

        • Maureen Malloy says:

I attempted installing the Boxee Beta the other night on my AppleTV. I followed the instructions perfectly, and everything installed very well. However, I ran into the same problem, whereby I couldn’t view a darned thing because I kept getting the same message about Flash Player not being installed. It was VERY disappointing. I had no idea what to do. I found JimWiley’s blog forum and solution, except I have no idea how to SSH into anything. I then attempted to just click on stuff in each of the new menus on my ATV, and it wiped out the entire drive. I had to re-sync all of my content, and even lost new media b/c I hadn’t backed up to my iTunes on my desktop. Apple restored them to me, and everything’s been re-syncing since Thursday. It’s now Sunday. This was a HUGE disaster. It’s like getting to the Red Sea and Moses can’t part it because a critical thing like Adobe Flash Player wasn’t part of the Beta installer in his cane. So, back to square one: is there anyone who can walk me through creating SSH connections???? Any help is appreciated. Would love to make this work. How are all of these other people viewing content w/Boxee Beta on ATV? Thanks. ~MM

          • marcel says:

            Maureen
please go to the Launcher >Downloads and install Boxee Beta once again as there was an issue with installing flash but now it has been fixed

          • Maureen Malloy says:

Thanks for your response… I will. I’ll let you know what happens. :)

          • Maureen Malloy says:

Okay, it worked!! Yay! Here’s the thing: Hulu content has a lag time… the programs are VERY slow! If it’s content right from the programming channel, then the viewing time is much smoother. Also, why is there no children’s programming out of all the genres offered???

  21. moti says:

    Hey there…

I’m totally new to the whole boxee-on-atv-thing and have one question.

After installing the boxee-thing, am i still able to use the “normal” atv-os?

    thx!

  22. wylie says:

Lets say we install the Boxee beta on our AppleTV, but decide to uninstall it, how do we do that and get back to the original AppleTV OS?

    • marcel says:

You can easily uninstall Boxee by either choosing a factory restore or:
      1. Login to the AppleTV (if appletv.local does not work use the IP address of your AppleTV)

      type:
      ssh frontrow@appletv.local

2.Delete launcher and XBMC / Boxee

      sudo rm -rf /Applications/Boxee.app/

      3.Remove settings of Boxee :

      rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/

      4.Reboot and that’s it

      sudo reboot

  23. Fred says:

Boxee has lots of promise. On the ATV, it is just too underpowered. I’ve been searching for a solution to let me run my slingplayer remotely as well as a way to
get hulu or other flash based sites to run. Wouldn’t it be cool if Boxee could act
as a remote display on underpowered devices? What if Boxee on my ATV could
link up with Boxee on my Mac? The ATV boxee could put itself in proxy mode where all commands would be relayed to the remote boxee and a lightweight stream of the remote display could be rendered locally, use something like nomachine nx, or some other fast protocol. On the boxee server, an app to encapsulate a local program like slingplayer so that the ATV boxee could render anything you can integrate into the server boxee.

Or maybe we could just put together a lightweight linux appliance that runs on ATV and remotes a PC’s display (which could be running boxee)

    -Fred

  24. Nooch says:

With this installed will I be able to stream videos from Netflix?

  25. Wiggle says:

Last time i installed the alpha on my ATV the BBC iplayer was very juddery and stuttered – can anyone tell me if they have tested this and if it is improved??

Thankyou – Cheers for the update guys :)

    • JimWiley says:

Can confirm iPlayer rocks! I use it all the time…. Performance and picture quality is far and away the best of the UK apps…

  26. RickZ says:

After installing the Beta, I don’t see the apps for Hulu or Fancast. For me, that’s the only reason to install Boxee. How do I install those apps?

  27. DSKR says:

i am truly short of words to praise you on this….the new UI is simply stunning…you guys rock…keep it going

  28. Steve says:

Sweet Jesus, it works! Finally! Kudos to the dev team for making this happen. You guys rock.

  29. Brett says:

I love the new beta on my Apple TV, but the crashing with error 4 because of scanning thumbnails is a bit problematic. Also, where did Hulu go?

    • JimWiley says:

You search for a show and Boxee automatically displays the sources where it is available to you – which could includ a local or network source, Hulu or other source. So Hulu is integrated into the UI and no longer requires a separate app….

  30. webdweeb says:

it would be nice if there was actually an Apple TV download at the Apple TV download link.

    • Tom Sella says:

Well, unfortunately it is not that simple. a) Apple does not provide the means to install directly on the Apple TV, and b) we did not make the ATVUSB-Creator software.

  31. Chris R says:

Just installed boxee for the first time on my Appletv. Went smooth but I can’t see any pics for the apps….
Just black squares show up with no names?
    Any suggestions?
Kinda hard to see what I’m opening. ;)

  32. Omri says:

Yeah!!! can’t wait to go home and install it.
I was thinking about it yesterday while playing around with the Beta on my mac…
My AppleTV looked really sad while I was doing that :-)

    Thanks for everyone involved!
And thanks for the Boxee team for making this great product.

  33. dor says:

AWSOME, thanks for that boxee. I am very excited of you service.

  34. christian says:

got it up and running! thank you!

  35. sondjata says:

Please fix this wireless DOS issue. This Beta completely kills my Netgear router.

  36. pescasat says:

guys I want to know what I should buy an ATV to see my MKV?

  37. tim olson says:

how much difference will it make to run a 100t to the atv instead of wireless? i have a port on the other side of the wall & have been avoiding drilling the hole.. atv works fine but boxee is super jerky and slow

  38. Hello just came across your blog and been reading some of your entries and just wondering why you selected a Wordpress blog dont you find it impossible to do anything with? Been thinking about starting one.

  39. RasmusW says:

Please add Broadcom HD support. Boxee CK on ATV is so nice!

  40. pescasat says:

nobody would answer me? I can do with Boxee on my ATV mkv files without problems

  41. dsisaac says:

    can it run netflicks?

  42. tehquads says:

I installed Boxxee on my Apple Tv with no trouble, but the frame rate playing Hulu videos is outrageously slow. This is problematic — Hulu is the main source for television! I tried changing my Apple Tv settings to 480p, and that improved things only slightly.

Anyone have any success solving this problem?

  43. kyle says:

thanks guys!!! appreciate all those involved in these hacks, love my appletv with boxee!

  44. Maureen Malloy says:

Love Boxee, but there is a lag time when viewing content from Hulu. Also, sometimes, I “close” out of a program to return to the main menu, but the audio is still running.
Any children’s programming coming soon to Boxee. Only choice is “Hello Kitty”. :)
    Thx.
