28 days later. a new version of the Boxee Beta.

We have released a new version of the Boxee Beta (0.9.20.10708). It is actually 37 days later, but I just really wanted to use that title for the blog post…

Since releasing the Beta we have seen significant uptake in usage. Some stats:

  • 150,000 new users joined Boxee
  • 3 million Boxee apps launched
  • 1.5 million TV episodes and Movies were watched

The new version of the Beta includes almost no new features, but rather is focused on bug fixes. We focused on stability issues. Many hangs and crashes were identified and resolved. We spent a bunch of time trying to improve the never-ending saga of handling SMB shares.

All-in-all, more than 500 issues have been resolved.

We could not have done it without the amazing feedback users are giving us. With the Boxee Beta, we have expanded our Early Access list to tens of thousands of users.  This Early Access list has developed into a very active community of testers reporting bugs in great detail on http://jira.boxee.tv.

The community has helped us focus on the most important issues and identified points where Boxee needs some TLC.

Here are some of the things that kept us busy:

  • Multilingual keyboard support: under settings->appearance->region to add keyboards
  • Significantly improved video quality of our DXVA support
  • Regained support for older graphics cards (pre-2.0 pixel shader) which was broken after move to DXVA
  • Improved file scanning performance
  • Hardware acceleration of H.264 on Intel HD4500 cards
  • Hang on FLAC tag read over SMB
  • SMB crashes when canceling SMB operations
  • Hang on shutdown due to wait for SMB and file scanner
  • Hang in file scanner when manually scanning a folder
  • Hangs due to excessive locks around database pool
  • Hangs when left idle due to UDP sockets leak
  • Corrupted graphics on some ATI cards (X1600)
  • Log file cycling (every 32M, old log overrides boxee.old.log)
  • Present action dialog when clicking on DVD icon to allow browse/eject
  • Optimization to file scanning making it less IO intensive
  • Fixes to iPhone remote keyboard under Linux
  • Added support for m4b playback (audio books)
  • Crash in ID3 tag reading (playback and background scanning of some mp3 files)
  • Crash in some wav files which contained extra-info in the wav header (playback and background scanning)
  • Crash on some rss feeds caused by mis-parsing of empty http headers
  • Crash on image extraction from mp3 tags (in some cases)
  • win32: fixed runtime error in some cases where vc90 runtime was not installed properly
  • Dual screen issues. sometimes a movie would only show black screen when switching screens.
  • Allow apps to define properties for rtmp streaming
  • Playback of some internet video streams, mainly coming from playlists (partial read of the network buffer was causing wrong codec detection)
  • Playlist playback of internet video streams was sometimes using the music player instead of the video player
  • Playback of music from history (was not working and now it will open the folder played from)
  • Logout was broken enabling logging-in even after password change (was using stored cookie)
  • Win32: when launching boxee while another instance is running it will just bring the other instance to front

Download the new version from http://www.boxee.tv/download and help us continue to improve!

One thing that remains not addressed is AppleTV support for our Beta. Unfortunately, as AppleTV support was not created by us, we have no control or insight when, if ever, it will be fixed. That said.. For the adventurous, JimWiley & hillbilly1980 have worked on a step-by-step guide for getting your AppleTV running Boxee Beta. Let them know how you like it :)

  1. Gazete Oku says:

Hi, thank you very much. good job.

  2. DeFi says:

Great News. When will there be good content available to european boxee users?

    • Tom Sella says:

We would love to have great European content on Boxee! I call for our European users to look at our API, and submit content applications to us.

We are too small to go after content partners in all countries, so we’ll definitely need the community help on that.

  3. Justin says:

w00t! good job guys. it just gets better and better.

  4. Frode Leonhardsen says:

Great job guys! I didn’t like the new font though, I thought the old one was great.

  5. Why don’t you just tell people the truth… that you aren’t working on the beta for the apple tv because it is in direct competition with your own set top box… kinda lame that you use the ATV as a testing platform for your software but are not supporting it going forward.

    • avner ronen says:

it has nothing to do with the upcoming Boxee Box by D-Link.

we would love to see Boxee running on as many hardware devices as possible. what ever works best for the user.

the issue with the install of the Boxee Beta on the Apple TV relates to the patchstick software and launcher. both are products not developed by Boxee.

  6. Dave says:

Great! Can’t wait to get home and load this up on my HTPC. Keep up the great work.

  7. Rulo says:

Thanks BOXEE for the hard work, I really appreciate the software. I can’t wait for the BOXEE Box. Is Dlink already manufacturing them or they are still in development? How many are you expecting to get in the first batch? Do you have a team exclusively working on the Box? Or that is up to Dlink?
Thanks again and sorry for the questions (I missed the online interview on Monday)

    • avner ronen says:

the Box is still in the works (both hardware and software).

not sure about the first batch. D-Link is experienced with this stuff, so I hope it will be enough to address the demand.

we have a dedicated embedded team that works on porting Boxee to new platforms.

      • Rulo says:

Thanks as always Avner for responding to my questions. You have done so many times already and I greatly appreciate your kindness. Wish you guys the best of lucks with BOXEE.

      • Yoni says:

        Hi Avner,

        Kind of off topic, but…

Do you need a kick ass graphic designer to do some freelance work for boxee? Not just all talk, or bush league photoshop lens flares, but actual clean and sophisticated design.

BA in Visual Comm., 27 years old, born in the US, fluent in Hebrew (but not an ars). I’ve been designing for over 10 years. Super adept at all adobe apps.

I know it’s random, but what the heck, figured I’d ask. : )

  8. @Rolando

How does that make any sense? Boxee more than support plenty of other “all in one” boxes and if you read this blog they actually recommend plenty of boxes that are in direct competition to their upcoming Boxee Box.

Boxee is meant to be put on hardware that allows the user to use whatever software they want. Apple TV is NOT such a device and I wouldn’t want the Boxee team wasting time trying to make sure people can hack another companies hardware to run their app.

  9. thesoze says:

    @Rolando

you’re crazy and insulting to the hardworkers at Boxee! First, I wouldn’t even think of installing Boxee in that stupid Apple gated community. You think Steve Jobs would love that if you tried?

Get over yourslef and be productive in this community or just buzz off with your iStupidcrap.

    Jeez!

  10. Justin says:

My main reason why I do not use Boxee is because it doesn’t recognize my media even after renaming accordingly. Has this bug been fixed? If it hasn’t, it should be a main concern.

  11. sfmatt says:

new forum thread re: (absence of) beta for ATV:

    http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=15965

    boo.

  12. alltheapps says:

3 million Boxee apps launched? what… where can i find all of these?

  13. gitmoDonkey says:

@heartlessgamer and @thesoz. Get off Rolando’s back, there is lots of valid content in his posting. First your laptop and desktop does not compete with Boxee Box the same way AppleTV does. I mean none of them cost under $200 and can be put near to a nice TV and HT set. So AppleTV can be thought as a direct competition to the Box. I am sure Boxee pple are hardworking and dedicated but this is a corporation which is trying to make a buck, so it would also make sense for them not to support appleTV.

The question is have they done it in a way that used and abused the trust of the volunteer community connected to boxee on appleTV. I think pple have a right to be offended by Boxee since they have, not even three weeks ago, assured us on the forum that the support is forthcoming and have in general been suggesting that they support the appleTV.

Some explanation from Boxee pple, not infantile comments from @thesoze, would be appropriate here.

    • Rulo says:

You can all still install XBMC on the apple TV; they are even working on supporting the Broadcom crystal HD on that platform. At some point I think somedody will have a port of the new Boxee too.

    • avner ronen says:

The situation is pretty simple. Boxee is running on OS X 10.4, which is the OS running on Apple TV. In late 2008 a couple of developers created a patchstick that enabled users to install Boxee and XBMC on Apple TV.

We have been working to improve the performance of Boxee on OS X 10.4 and make sure the Beta runs much better than the alpha.

Unfortunately the patchstick and loader software have not been updated, making it much harder for users to install XBMC or Boxee on Apple TV. We have reached out to the developers and still hope they will release a new version of the patchstick software.

I understand the frustration, but there is no hidden agenda here.

      • gitmoDonkey says:

        @avner

I appreciate your response and will take it at face value. I understand that supporting a hacked product can only be so much of a priority, given that the next official Apple update may wreck it all. However, AppleTV is a bit more (or less) than iBook with 10.4: given the hardware constraints and a video hardware they use. Thanks to couple of pple (mentioned in the blog) a number of us are running Beta on ATV, though it did require a few mods to Boxee settings (like skiploopfilter, net hacks etc) to make it run smoother. So we were hoping that you guys can get it running better still since only you Boxee best. And there was this post 3 weeks ago from someone at Boxee telling us official ATV port will be coming out.

In any case, thanks for your response

        • avner ronen says:

on our side we’ve done a lot to make sure it will run smoother.

we were hoping that by this time there will be a new release of the patchstick and launcher, but obviously it is not the case. we will be more diligent in updating about the status.

  14. Jesse Harris says:

I think the criticism for Boxee over Apple TV support is well-founded. I’ve got plenty of Haterade to spread myself.

I bought an Apple TV just because I could get Boxee on it. In the early days, it was pretty neat. I used to watch Hulu on it all the time. Then Hulu broke and I started trying to use the local media features instead.

I say trying because it would never properly index my media and I could never figure out how to force it to do so. Boxee would also randomly disconnect connections to my network shares on my desktop with no warning; I only knew it had happened because all of my local media disappeared from the browser. It also ended up running very, very slow and had a significant number of media playback issues that I could reproduce with other Patchstick apps. This includes XMBC off which Boxee is (allegedly) based, so I was extra confused about the playback issues.

I also couldn’t ever find out what content was available on the various channels they created. There’s no indexing across sites for easy searching, no recommendations, and I was never able to get the various Hulu workarounds to do anything but put a non-functional icon in my menus.

Just for kicks, I tried out Boxee on my desktop when the beta came out. Unfortunately, not much has changed. It was slower than on my ATV despite the significantly better hardware, it still didn’t index local media properly, and it crashed more than the alpha. That was the final straw. Boxee has a lot of hype and promise, but for me, it just doesn’t deliver.

So, basically, Boxee sucks for local media, the streaming media selection is highly disorganized and disjointed, AND they’ve basically flipped the bird at one of the most enthusiastic groups of early adopters by making Apple TV a red-headed step-child. Eff them. I’m sticking with XBMC until they can get their crap together.

    • avner ronen says:

I am sorry you have such a disappointing experience with Boxee. Some of it is in our control an up to us to improve and make you a happy user, and some of it is not entirely in our control (e.g. proper Hulu support, running on Apple TV).

Playback on Boxee and XBMC should be working pretty much the same. I encourage you to give the Beta a try and see how it performs (both in terms of playback as well as handling your network shares).

In the Beta we tried to put all the TV Shows into one place, so you can easily search and organize across tens of sources. With regard to other types of content it is still spread across multiple apps, some like Movies and Music Videos could be indexed, other types of content are more challenging to organize.

On which desktop did you try running Boxee? Most desktops (unless you have an ‘ancient’ machine) should actually run Boxee much better than Apple TV.

      • Rulo says:

Where else would you have the CEO of a company responding to your criticisms in this way? Try to do that with Comcast. Just saying. The latest BETA is running much better. The first try was rough through, but it is a BETA product. Use at your own risk.

      • Jesse Harris says:

        Thanks for the response.

ATV support is something you pushed very early on as a flagship feature. You still do. A lot of folks bought an ATV so they could run the Patchstick and use it as a cheap STB. Those early adopters are why you even made it to beta. It also doesn’t help when one of your forum admins claims that support was “within a week away” on Jan. 26 only to be told a few weeks later that it may or may not happen. http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=83448&postcount=2 Basically, be honest with us. If support for the ATV is dead or isn’t going to be maintained from your end, that should be stated up-front.

Yes, playback of local media should be working the same on both XBMC and Boxee given their common core. For some reason, it does not. Granted, some of the files I’ve played are encoded in an odd manner, but the discrepancy shouldn’t exist. I would try to move to the beta, but again, I’m an ATV user. When XBMC does it right out of the box, I don’t feel a lot of incentive to muck around.

I’d feel a lot more like I should invest something in it if the online video sources weren’t a mish-mash. Some kind of search facility or “what’s hot” page that unified them would make it a lot more useful. As of right now, I feel like I’m just wasting time poking around at random links in the hope that maybe I’ll stumble across something interesting.

The desktop I tried the beta on is an Athlon X2 4600+ with 2GB PC8500 and a 7200rpm HDD running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The app felt downright sluggish and I had to use Task Manager to shut it down after only 20 minutes of playing with it. Indexing was still a lot slower than using XMBC on the ATV and that has the additional handicap of running over a LAN instead of on local drives. This has been a reported problem for many months from many users; I would have expected some kind of resolution by this point.

While I understand I’ve been using an alpha product, the XBMC core is anything but. It’s got 7 years of development behind it and has been, in my experience, rock-solid. I’d expect a similar experience in Boxee when using those core features and I don’t believe that’s unreasonable at all. I would forgive the rough design of the streaming features if I didn’t feel like I was taking a step back on playing media on my LAN.

My basic point is that I feel like Boxee should be building upon what XBMC does well, not making trade-offs for new features. A lot of us still rip our DVD collection and download our favorite TV shows. If Boxee isn’t meant for us, just say so. Otherwise, you should fix what’s busted.

        • Fundun says:

I guess you need to learn how to configure your PC. I run the Boxee Beta on an Athlon XP 2200+ with 1G of ram and it runs great. Also, why would you want to use a locked down Apple system anyway. Try an Acer Aspire Revo, which you can purchase for less on Newegg.com, and you control the software, not Steve Jobs.

  15. jjmz says:

nice.. still waiting for nfo support to try boxee though – have a large library of content that has been painfully fixed up with nfos and boxee just ignore all that information unfortunately.

  16. Jiggy says:

I love the look and function of the new beta version. I’m not sure if by “improved file scanning performance” that means that media files should be recognized better. Sounds like it to me. I seem to be having much better luck with the new beta than I did with the original beta as well as with the alpha version. I have a couple of odd recognition issues such as the movie Wristcutters: A Love Story being recognized as The Waterhorse…yeah, not sure about that one or how to fix it at this point since there is still no option (that I can find) to manually recognize media. I still think that it would be great to have that functionality back or the ability to search a site such as IMDB or thetvdb.com from within Boxee and select the page to scrape for particular file. Overall I’m pleased with the update and will continue to talk up Boxee whenever I can.

    • tsella says:

You can the specific misidentification at http://jira.boxee.tv for us to look at it.

Manual resolve feature is in the works, and not too far away.

Regarding scraping – we do not scrape – we resolve against our own database, which in turn comes from partners like IMDB.

  17. tyler d says:

Boxee beta is so fantastic I can’t even describe how its changed the way I view possibilities of media and the computer and streaming. Still having issues with using my android remote to get out of deep menu screens (I.e. the screen caibration screen). Also the mac version calibration screen no longer saves the advabced calibration when hitting “back”. Otherwise great update.

  18. Ransico says:

Awesome, I’ve been waiting eagerly for this. Thanks Boxee team!

  19. rob says:

Just upgraded. This seems to be starting up so much more quickly for me (crunchbang linux, very old machine), and running so much smoother. Great job!

  20. Kerrigan says:

No play all feature yet? Pass.

  21. Johannes says:

Please add NFO or other hinting support! This a deal breaker for me and the only thing keeping me from replacing my Popcorn Hour A-110.

  22. tee says:

Thanks for bugfixes… I’ve had alot of crashes with the beta..
I really hope you will implement some new features soon though…
Manual editing / adding of local content is badly needed.. :-)

  23. jokerblog says:

good work, good idea.. thanks team !!

  24. Jason says:

Cool, I’ll have to give the new update a try. Thanks!

  25. Mitja says:

in boxee install download file there is stated version boxee-0.9.20.10711
after install…if i look at general settings > version: 0.9.20.10708

    is this OK or…?

  26. Max says:

Any idea when we can get our precious Manually Resolve feature back? I miss that terribly. I am sick of missing/mislabeled content. I can only try to rename so many times.

Overall I am very happy with Boxee Beta, despite the fact that streaming video is unwatchable with my ION N230 box… maybe someday I can watch?

    • Rulo says:

Do you have the Acer Aspire Revo AR1600? Have you installed Windows 7? Do you have the latest Flash Beta? How about rivers? Have you explored the forums to get suggestions and ideas?

  27. Shawn Bouchard says:

I’ve got Boxee Beta running on my ATV. I followed the Green Light hack/workaround and it runs like a charm. Now have to figure out how to disable auto-update on ATV and all is good.

  28. Bpardy says:

I’d love to try this out:(

Unfortunately, when I upgraded from alpha and lost manual resolving of names for shows in my library it was borderline unusable :( I had to switch back.

I can’t wait to swap back to the beta when you guys put this back in! Thanks for all the hard work.

  29. Goodlife says:

I just updated my ATV Launcher to the latest (3.2.2), and low-and-behold – you can now download the newest beta through the launcher downloads. It is happily re-indexing now. I’ve been using Beta on my Windows7 box for a while, and am looking forward to playing around with it on my ATV.

ATV users – take it easy on the Boxee devs. As Avner says a lot of the issues were/are out of their control. Boxee on ATV depends a lot on the XMBC/patchstick/launcher devs (who do this in their spare time), since it is not in the Boxee business plan to jailbreak/bypass Apple’s lock on the ATV.

  30. Alan R. says:

So there still isn’t a manual find for Boxee Beta yet? Man, guess I’ll stay on alpha. And oddly enough have no problems with. I have had zero problems with Alpha. Minor issues being it won’t find some posters for me. But that’s kinda minuscule. Hopefully updates will bring the manual find!

  31. cjescudero says:

Thanks for the software, thanks for the new version. Since I meet boxee, many things are changing on my home: future new tv set, improvement of my internet ISP conection, …

By the way, where can I find changelog between releases?

  32. IndustryInsider says:

    Hi Avner,
The entire AV industry is waiting for the dlink/boxee device to be released. We are ready to to sell the dlink boxee device to our customers. Here are some concerns we have:

    * You should support 1080i/p component video output… by not offering component video ports and forcing us to use HDMI we cannot integrate the box into AV matrix systems! The reason is because HDMI is very problematic. It works very poorly compared to the tried and true component video

    * Look at apple tv, roku, vudu, your cable box, and every other box in your entertainment center. They all have component video output! Roku is taking a big gamble. Think of the tens of millions of TVs around the world that DO have component video capability but do NOT have HDMI….

    * Think of the tens of millions of people that are going to buy the dlink boxee and then go return it for a refunc because HDMI did not synch up…. or they did not have HDMI port on their TV! What a nightmare for your company.

    * Who is advising you on this video output issue? You should consult with somebody experienced in the industry… your company is really reducing the target audience greatly.

    * There are tons of great chipsets on the market that output component video.

Kindly respond to his issue. Thanks!

  33. Jim Fernandez says:

Thanks for all your hard work!
My Apple TV would really be limited (suck) without the additional content we can enjoy now.

    Thank You

    Jim F.

  34. Anthony says:

I installed the new beta, and I am checking it out. So far I like it. I went ahead and wrote a review about it – http://akschaefer.com/2010/02/20/boxee-review-part-2/ Enjoy

  35. Andey says:

love boxee since the beginning <3

  36. Oliver Richards says:

I just want to thank the Boxee developers for the work that they have put in thus far. Boxee is an amazing product at a wonderful price (free). But i have to chime in here. But I do have a small question about linux support.

But my main beef is with Hulu. Hulu is essential to the core competency of this product on linux with move networks and netflix not working. But in the current version, neither the 32 bit nor 64 bit versions of Boxee for linux have working hulu.

It has been broken in 64 bit since the beginning (see Boxee 4191)

and was broken two releases ago in 32 bit (see Boxee 4311).

I know I could just go back and install windows, but that would require backing up and reformatting my entire music / video library! And considering the dlink boxee box is based on linux, one might assume that linux would have the best support out of the three options.

Now i haven’t tried boxee on any other platform, but I can tell you that in linux, the core functionality of boxee has been broken for a while, and has been ignored in the last two releases. I see bugs like

-Fixes to iPhone remote keyboard under Linux

getting fixed, which is nice and all, but honestly how many linux users have iphones, considering there is no iphone support in linux. And who cares about a remote control when you can’t even watch anything using that remote control!

So please boxee staff: take a look at the two bugs I have there, install ubuntu on a machine and test boxee out and see what we are talking about. Or maybe if ubuntu isn’t the best platform for Boxee, then create your own live CD (like XBMC) to run it on. I would be happy with a custom, limeted linux distro for Boxee to run on top of. But PLEASE give us linux users some love!

  37. Anil says:

Disappointed about not having Beta on AppleTV yet. I went through the cumbersome scripts to install this on top of my Boxee Alpha, but now I can’t use either one. I am hoping the developers of the launcher and the patch stick will take the time to support the Beta on the latest AppleTV upgrade.

  38. Ketan Kothari says:

Seems like today ATV update may have caused the boxee to not work. Unfortunately I updated and then tried the Boxee USB install. Anyone else have a problem. I cannot ssh either.

  39. Scott Denton says:

So far loving the new interface other than it does not seem to support Drobos for media storage. Its been like two days since I have scanned the first time and I can’t get it to recognize any of my content. The older version seemed to have no problem.

  40. Shawn says:

I really like the concept for boxee, and I’m trying to use it more and more. One big problem though. The content is just so unreliable for tv shows, and I hate that I can’t categorize my movies — I’ve got an extensive movie library and having to wade through all those darn thumbnails, or even worse lists, is excruciating.

How about an option that just copies the cover art and genres from the movie section of itunes? That would be brilliant along with a better navigation interface for movies.
