Boxee Box internals revealed. NVIDIA Tegra 2 FTW

Many have been asking about it and we’ve been eager to share the details of what’s inside the Boxee Box by D-Link. Today we’re making a joint announcement with NVIDIA and D-Link revealing that the Boxee Box is powered by the Tegra 2 (T20) platform!

The T20 is based around a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU with that additional graphic umphhh NVIDIA is famous for, allowing us to deliver our user experience in a small box, and very low power consumption (we’re green too :) )

With Tegra 2 powering the Boxee Box you can:

  • Enjoy a fluid and responsive user interface that is similar to the UI performance up till now available only on full blown PCs
  • Play 1080p video from locally stored content and stream HD video content from the Internet
  • Play Adobe® Flash® 10.1 content from across the web, including HD content

More inside the Box:

  • RF chip by Nordic – to support a great remote control experience that is not dependent on line-of-sight and can work from anywhere in the house
  • 802.11N wireless chip by Broadcom

What’s not in the Box:

  • No hard-drive – We discussed hard-drive at length with D-Link, and figured people already have storage solutions, and that we should do our best to reduce the price of the Boxee Box. You’ll be able to connect your choice of storage devices directly to the Box using USB
  • No IR – While we realize many people are using universal remotes, we believe there is a greater benefit having a full QWERTY keyboard, and the right way to do that was RF. We really wanted to also support IR, for various reasons we could not get it as part of the build. We continue supporting this in software, so you can use any IR dongle and continue using your universal remote with Boxee.

awesome! i'd like to know how the tegra 2 compares to the atom + ion platform. i'm a little disappointed that there is no built-in ir receiver, given the fact that is what is most popular.

  2. Jo says:

    Wow…simply…wow

  3. Agent Sonore says:

Hi! I'm just wondering about what kind of IR dongle you were thinking???

  4. Mike says:

Will there limited flash storage that holds the software and userData? If so what size will that be?

    • tom sella says:

well, it can't unlimited ;) looks like 512mb

      • Lenny says:

Will 512MB really be enough for the operating-system plus Boxee, as well a cache for movie and TV show cover posters?

I use XBMC Live at home right now and even though the operating-system and XBMC Media Center application takes up less than 512MB I am still using more well over 3GB for userdata such as cached cover posters, skins, scripts and plugins. Sure I have a lot of local stored movies, TV shows, and music, but I know plenty of people who have a lot more than me.

I do not think that 512MB will be enough in the long run for anyone. What if you guys just in a year or two decide to add additional features or apps that require more room than that, will than not make this obsolete? Voddler for example requires 13GB of local storage for caching movies! I think that it should have at least 16GB of storage to cover unforseen future needs.

        • Suryjuto says:

Kind of curious about this myself. Would there exist the possibility to store these files off-box perhaps? I think the cover art and such adds a nice clean look to the library interface. Thanks for answering in advance.

          • tom sella says:

these are exactly the kind of things we are are taking into consideration, while being concious of how we can keep a device at an affordable price.

also keep in mind that Boxee is substantially different from XBMC in how it manages this data.

          • Mario says:

Also remember that Boxee supports the use of profiles for multiple users and that each profile will store its own database and poster covers cache for the library. That means the Boxee Box has to have the internal storage capacity to handle the cache for multiple profiles.

Imagine a family of four or five people each having their own profile on the Boxee Box in the living-room, all of them having their own digital media collection on a NAS or file-server.

  5. jruppert says:

Since all of my storage will be lan based, I wonder what the indexing time is?

  6. x40sw0n says:

sooo…. my only question at this stage… $$$$??

  7. interconnect says:

what os will it be running on?

    • Robert says:

I think I saw somewhere that it will run the linux version

      • Lenny says:

Maybe Android? I mean since NVIDIA said in its press-release for the Tegra 2 that they so far officially support Windows CE, Windows Mobile, Android, and Chrome OS.

        • thejart says:

i can pretty much guarantee that it's not going to be running android. if it's running linux, it's more than likely running a debian-based distro (since that's how they're already packaging it). plus, at ~$200, there's no room for a proprietary OS license. my money's on ubuntu…but i'm hoping it's custom, karmic is a beast.

    • Robert says:

      Okay, I found it:

      DeviceGuru writes

"OpenBoxeeBox.com is reporting that D-Link's new DM-380 Boxee Box, demonstrated last night in New York at Boxee's Boxee Beta unveiling, runs Linux but does not yet stream Netflix video-on-demand titles. However, according to an unnamed Boxee insider, 'the goal is to have the device support Netflix.' The DM-380 features ports for HDMI, optical digital and analog audio, dual USB, and wired Ethernet, plus it has an SD card slot and built-in WiFi. Photos and screenshots are at OpenBoxeeBox, and additional details are on D-Link's website."

    • tom sella says:

I can confirm Linux is our platform of choice :)

  8. Robert says:

Will the remote work in other media centers as well? (xbmc, windows media center, etc…)

  9. Kevin says:

Sony was thinking the same thing about their Bluetooth remote, but again, everyone hates it, and would much rather a standard IR port. This device won't find it's way into a high-end system without it or RS-232.

  10. Shane says:

    Hi guys,

Whilst I respect the fact you wanted a full QWERTY keyboard, not having inbuilt IR is quite annoying and one of the reasons why I don't own a PS3.

I hope you remember (seeing it's yours) but a full QWERTY keyboard exists already – it's called the Boxee App for iPhone. It also works without requiring line of site and in other rooms of the house.

I'm hesitant enough already to put the irregularly shaped box in my cabinet – for it not to support a universal remote via IR is shortsighted and may tip me to not buying it. There is a reason IR is the main technology used for remotes – it works and the UI (ie point at the device and press button) is something everyone gets.

    Regards,

    Shane.

    • Robert says:

Personally, I'm excited about the remote – especially if it will also work with other applications. I've been looking at the diNovo mini, and the Lenovo paddle thing that just come out and I think this remote is going to be more what I was looking for (no need for a 'mouse' type functionality in a media center IMHO).

    • Robert says:

Oh yeah, and typing on a touch screen sucks – This will be much better than the iPhone app.

      • Peter says:

the iPhone app also requires you to own an iPhone..

        30$ remote or 700$ phone?

        Tough choice.

        • Patrick says:

Amen! Glad someone here has some sense! If you want your precious, crappy IR remote you can still have it, it'll just take 5 more dollars for a USB IR dongle.

And Tegra2 was TOTALLY the right decision. Before this I was assumign it would be ION, but this is even better! Now get Netflix streaming on there and I'll gladly hand you some of my hard-earned money!

Good decision on the external only data-storage, as well! Not sure if this will be there, but it would be nice to have an Gb/s ethernet port/connection too so NAS options are more likely to suceed (streaming HD video content over wireless is still tough)!

Downloading the beta for trial on my Revo (go ION!) this weekend! SWEET!

  11. Ross says:

How about a TV power/volume on the remote for those who will only have a Boxee box in their AV stack?

    • tom sella says:

We considered this at length, but once we decided on QWERTY keyboard, and RF to best support it, putting an IR in the remote for universal control became unrealistic.

having said that, I can certainly think of ways of using our API to use a beanny bag and control this from within Boxee.

  12. rudolph says:

does the box connect to a network drive. I am interested in such a device that can connect to my shared network drive that is a server to all my media contents.

  13. i says:

Didn't the nVidia gods declare there to be no linux support for tegra(2)?

It is a spectacular thing that you guys have already done the difficult work of a linux port for us. ;)

    thanks boxee

    -ck

  14. Nnyan says:

This is going to HAVE to have Netflix for me to opt for this rather then something like Popbox (at a lower price point).

  15. Marc Brooks says:

So, can I attach a USB-DVD or USB-BlueRay drive to this so I can throw away my XBox running XBMC?

    • Lenny says:

I very much doubt that it for legal and license reasons will be able to playback original Blu-ray Disc movie discs from a USB Blu-ray Disc drive since those discs are encrypted.

I am however sure that it will playback a Blu-ray rips (ripped backups) that you can through at it.

Not sure if it will be able to playback bought DVD-Video movies from a USB DVD-ROM though, Boxee for Linux can do that but will this?

  16. FM says:

Is it localized or can be used in any country ?!

  17. Shawn says:

Just curious, I have been interested in a small device to use that can play my stored videos, music on my NAS and also allow surfing the net and playing media content from e.g. crunchyroll and youtube. Can you confirm if your device is capable of doing this? Thanks. The reason I ask is that 1080p and h264 flash stresses my basic computer AMD X2 4400. Is it possible to present some sort of examples of the smoothness of content played?

    Thanks

    • Joshua Jonah says:

This will play 1080p and Flash content fine, has apps for most online content, can play off a NAS. It will play all media smoothly, obviously streaming content is subject to the quality of your internet connection.

Surfing the net however is not possible, even the boxee boys can't make that work on a TV. Nobody has been able to do it and make it bearable. *has WebTV flashback*

That said, this is exactly what is advertised on the box. If you need more, you'll want to use a proper PC for the job. I for example have a torrent seed box, WINE for games, DVD authoring facilities, etc. on my htpc.

      • Shawn says:

Thanks Joshua, surfing the web in its general form doesn't worry me, but the question came up in that will be be limited to the web sites predetermined e.g. just youtube, or will we be able to type another media website in. I ask specifically as the kids like crunchyroll and I am loathed to spend thousands upgrading a pc to play this content. They have to live with stuttering playback now NOT related to web speed. I would certainly pay for a small device that removes the noisy pc from the tv. The tv a Samsung has some web content abilities but its tied to Yahoo widgets which after a bit becomes pretty pathetic as the choices are so limited. So I am only looking at entertainment and future websites that may come up that can provide entertainment and not give me the bad taste yahoo widgets have.

        • Adam M says:

There is infact a Crunchyroll App already, and it is fantastic. There entire library is available and plays without issue on my old media box. Cheers!

  18. Andre Vrignaud says:

Just a comment saying I'm really disappointed by the lack of IR support. Yes, the RF remote with a QWERTY keyboard is slick, but there's no reason you couldn't have done a version of that same remote with IR support as well. And it simply means I have to add another, not well-supported, IR dongle (see forums) and futz about with it to get it to work. Perhaps that's a ploy to try and drive people to the Boxee box itself, but I'm disappointed. No sale, I fear.

    • Pablo says:

i'll tell you one reason why this remote and IR arent going to be good friends, with ir you have to point to the receptor but when you are writing in the keyboard the remote should be parallel to the receptor, bad … no signal, people at boxee have done it well, ir is to the remotes what fax i to email, even if you wat to use your apple remote i'm sure that being an open osurce project you will have ways to manage it…

  19. Ken says:

Does the Tegra support 24p output?

  20. Fabila says:

Boxee will be perfect for me, except for 1 thing, the missing 5.1 analog audio output.

  21. mhungry says:

This is STILL a horrible shape design. It won't fit anywhere nicely in my TV stand. It doesn't match anything I have in the house or near my TV.

Nice specs, but the shape will bring it down, down, down. Keep the look and the colors, but for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, make it a normal square.

    • Jhon says:

Dont know what you mean, it will fit nicely near my banjo

    • chad says:

i agree with this poster. the shape, while it may be novel, isnt going to "hide" anywhere near my tv. other than looking cool it serves no purpose and could be more hindrance than its worth.

  22. SKO says:

Personally I don't care, but I think you guys really dropped the ball by not having IR on there. Any, and I mean ANY serious HT geek already has a fancy universal remote that sends IR commands. You've basically told every single Logitech Harmony owner to eff off. That's not a market I'd be blowing off if it were up to me. Those people are the most likely to buy this thing at first.

  23. agentorange says:

Wait a minute: Tegra 2 (250) basically means the boxee box can decode 3D Video content, right?

    Any word on HDMI 1.4?

Love the box already, IMHO it's the first time everything feels right with a device…

  24. Michael says:

Will the release of the Boxee Box have any negative effects in regards to Boxee development on other platforms?

  25. Andrew Carre says:

Excellent work guys! I can't wait to get my hands on the Boxee box. I will be buying one for every member of my family. Keep up the good work!

  26. Questioner says:

Would it be possible to put disc in Boxee if yes you are awesome, if not you should really consider it. Consider size of disc most used and do it. Boxee will be bigger but no cables ;>

  27. Lexi says:

Sorry but no IR (InfraRed) receiver means no purchase for me.

The wife and kid loves our Logitech Harmony Universal Remote.

    • Rob says:

(randomly picked your comment from all of the ones complaining about no IR, please don't take it as a personal attack per-say)

Let me get this right… you can afford to buy the harmony, you can afford to by the boxee box… but you cant afford to buy a 10$USD to make them work in, erm, harmony? Its pretty trivial to me, for people to be complaining about no IR support when It does not cost much at all to add it. the software itself will supporting nativity, its just the hardware out of the box that won't.

      • Lay-Z1 says:

So it's not enough that the Boxee Box is kind of ugly so it won't look good with the rest of boxes connected to our TVs, now we have to get ugly external dongle conneted to it as well to be able to use an univeral remote :P

I agree with most people here; no integrated IR reciever = no sale.

        • daveninja says:

I own a Logitech Harmony One and a WDTV Live. Soooo excited about this Boxee box, was so frustrated with the navigation in WDTV as I upgraded from an old XBOX running XBMC and it was much better IMO (just unfortunately limited in HW as the years went on). I'm hoping the Boxee interface is similar to XBMC. As far as IR, I'll gewt dongle in order to keep it simple for my wife to play the kid's movies, however I won't be spending any time using it with internet apps. Would much rather use a full QWERTY kb for that :) I'm actually more upset that I spent so much $ on a univeral remote that wasn't RF (didn't really understand the difference 1.5 years ago).

  28. Dan says:

This may be a bit preemptive to ask, but as a frustrated current WDTV live owner whose box doesn't support two-drive USB enclosures formatted as JBOD, does anybody have an idea if the Boxee Box will support two drive enclosures connected via one USB port?

  29. Moja says:

Will Boxee Box allow me to add new channels/apps?

(Example: channels specific to the Asian Indian audience).

Or, would I have to go through the Boxee Browser all the time?

XBMC allows for custom channels to be configured.

If yes to above, how will I get access to the software?

  30. ir user says:

not including an ir receiver in the box was short sighted. you still could have included the rf remote and added a mce compatible ir receiver. it would have cost you less than a buck and it would have enabled instant compatibility with millions of harmony and universal remotes.

  31. Peter says:

Will it come with a univeral power-supply so that it will run on both 110volt as well as 220volt like the AppleTV? If that is the case then I might import one from the USA.

  32. Jon says:

Sold!! Can't wait to buy this thing!

I just bought a WDTV Live a month or two ago. It's nice, and I was impressed by it at first, but the more I use it the more I realize how limited it is.

I really hope we see a strong homebrew community for the boxee box. I would love to see some emulators and other game/entertainment software to take advantage of that awesome remote!

  33. Rafael says:

How much will the Box , in retail, cost when launched ?

  34. David says:

A nice surprise when the platform details were finally released.

Low energy usage mixed with a slick interface I look forward to retiring my Apple TV.

  35. Pablo says:

is there any plan to support usb tv tuners play, and record to external disk, it should be really nice even if it comes in a later software update… Bold Design, specs, software, idea, price, i'm with 200$ in my hand waiting for somebody to take them, i love this

  36. Elan Shudnow says:

Was very interested in this. That was until I saw that it will not have IR support. Sorry Boxee, but I will not be purchasing you now.

  37. jason says:

Question about playing ISO's. I have a large number of ISO format DVDs from my DVD collection. I tried playing some of them on Boxee Beta on my Mac. The ISO was located on the machine itself and not streaming. The playback was jittery and not quite fluid. Will the chipset you are including on the D-Link eliminate this issue or should I convert the ISO's to another media?

You guys made huge leaps between beta and the alpha! I would be pre-ordering a D-Link today if I could!

Congrats on an outstanding CES showing!

    -Jason

  38. BonzaiM says:

Please tell me this box is going to be available in the UK on launch

  39. Tony says:

    Will boxee support NFS shares?

  40. Mike says:

Please tell me the boxee box will be available in New Zealand on launch

  41. Zchill says:

Will the box have support for webcams via the USB ports?

I'd love to use the Boxee Box to stream webcam content as well (and ideally have remote control over the cam as well)

This looks amazing – can't wait to get one!

  42. Thomas says:

What about DVB-C, DVB-S, DVB-T and recording TV? I won't buy anything, which is less useful than my old box from 2005.

  43. BC says:

Congratulations, it looks like you've built a real game changer. The specs are so sweet, the final product so nice. The ability to boot off the SD is also quite welcome.

Do you think in a future version you can add Skype and a camera/mic to the remote? Also a standard headphone jack on the remote for private listening would also be great. =)

    Again, great job and congratulations.

  44. alan says:

Using a dell zino hd for Boxee right now but I'd probably buy one of these and repurpose the zino for my wife. Not so sure about the keyboard I'm really happy with the iphone app as my remote

  45. jakmal says:

    Hi,

I would like some official Boxee information on the specs of the Boxee Box:

    1. What is the maximum bitrate allowed for H264 files? Can we play the usual 20 – 40 Mbps H264 rips on the Boxee Box?

    2. Is the HD decode engine in the Tegra 2 same as that in the Ion?

    3. Can we play 16 reference frame 1080p H264 files with Tegra 2 based Boxee Box?

    4. What is the exact power consumption of this box which you will put in the documentation which comes along with the box?

    5. Will you support decode of SD Real Media video files at least in software on the Cortex-A9? (It is known that Tegra 2 doesn't accelerate Real Media playback, so I am sure HD is ruled out)

Thanks in advance for your response!

  46. pmcd says:

Given the emphasis on internet streaming, will this media player be sold outside the US? For example, will it be sold in Canada? The video licensing issues would appear to be a nightmare. For example, Hulu is not really available from Canada, netflix isn't, etc… Given that, what would the unit bring to the table that a $130 device such as the WDTV Live doesn't?

    Thank's,

    philip

  47. Amazing, discovered your site on digg.Happy I finally tested it out. Not sure if its my Explorer browser, but sometimes when I visit your site, the fonts are really tiny? Anyway, love your post and will return.See Ya

  48. Ken says:

I already have a Microsoft wireless media keyboard that I bought with my PC that I was going to use with a media extender. If I get an IR dongle, would I be able to use this keyboard to navigate through the system?

  49. Drew says:
