New office for Boxee in NYC

Next week we will move to a new office in NYC (57W 16th St. 3rd floor). The previous tenant was Bonobos (we’re trying to get a few of those pants as part of the deal..).

It is a new neighborhood for us and we’re looking forward to becoming “locals” in a variety of new places.

When it comes to coffee we will adopt Cafe Grumpy as our coffee shop (4 blocks + 1.5 avenues = 7min, which is totally worth it for a good cup of coffee).

I will have to abandon my campaign to become the mayor of Stumptown on Foursquare, but I am looking forward to running for the mayorship of Grumpy. The incumbent mayor is spending a lot of time in the gym, so I hope my unhealthy lifestyle will be an advantage in this case, and that while he is working on his cardiovascular fitness i’ll be sipping an espresso and taking over as mayor.

Any recommendations for nearby places will be welcomed. Willing to walk 10min for a good coffee/pizza/burger/indian/sushi/tapas.

And Karaoke One 7 is just around the corner. That’s where you should strive to become mayor. I’m just sayin’.

  2. Tico says:

You definitely want to check out “Live Bait” on 23rd St for cocktails and grub. http://tinyurl.com/ybdsbtd

  3. Alex says:

You must hit up the Shake Shack @ Madison Square Park (23rd and Broadway)

Great burgers, and now that the weather’s cold you don’t have to wait in line for hours

  4. Elliot says:

Awesome! I use to live on 18th and Broadway. You’re all going to love the Union Square farmers market :]

    Hiring any designers?!

  5. Tim Shey says:

Don’t be a stranger! We’ll miss you guys (sniff) but we’re moving just five blocks away!

  6. Mitchell says:

Welcome to the Union Square area (I live next to the Strand).

IMO Joe The Art of Coffee at 9 East 13th Street (Close to 5th Ave) is closer and slightly better than Grumpy.

But good coffee, is you know, good coffee. :-)

  7. Tim Shey says:

Oh, and also, Grumpy’s on my walk to the new office, so you’ve got a race on for that mayorship.

  8. Mitchell says:

You are also really close to Taralluci E Vino at 15 East 18th. Great for lunch.

  9. James Molinaro says:

    Congratulations on the new office.

Does this mean you can now hire me into sales?

    It was worth a shot.

  10. Rodalpho says:

I actually live 3 blocks to the south.

For coffee I agree with Joe’s, but it’s a bit of a walk for you. There’s also jack’s stir brew on 10th street for american coffee. Great stuff, very high-tech and weird interior.

For pastries, coffee, lunch, you’re very close to the city bakery on 18th and 5th. The best hot chocolate in the city, since “the city” doesn’t include brooklyn and jacques torres. They make their own marshmallows too. Also great cookies, and don’t forget to try their famous pretzel croissant.

Get acquainted with menupages.com and seamlessweb.com.

Other great restaurants in the area:

    Chinese
No “real” chinese in the area. I usually order from Sammy’s Noodle Shop. They make a particularly fine roast pork lo mein, with unusually thick noodles.

    Indian
I usually order from Mitali on curry row or Indian Taj on bleeker. Mitali is superior, indian taj is cheaper.

    Chicken
Two choices, birdie’s and dirty bird. Birdie’s is by far the best choice, but I don’t know if they’ll deliver to you. You’re also near a popeyes and KFC on 14th street, if you want fast food stuff.

    Bagels
    Murray’s, no question.

    BBQ
You’re reasonably close to my 3rd favorite BBQ restaurant in manhattan, R.U.B. Great pulled pork.

    Pizza
Couple of choices. There’s Ray’s on 6th and 11th. This is the real, original, ACTUAL famous ray’s pizza restaurant. The one all the rest copy. Sweet sauce, good pie. You’re also close to Rocco’s pizza on 7th and 19th. They make their own sausage, good stuff.

    Middle-eastern
I always order from Hudson Falafel. Get the shisk tawouk (grilled chicken skewer) platter. Excellent stuff.

    Mexican
Somewhat slim choices. I order from Pinche Taqueria, but they’re pretty far from you. You might try Dos Toros tacqueria on 4th and 13th st. They’re cali-mex rather than mex-mex, but pretty tasty.

    Higher-end
If you’re taking clients out to dinner in the area, I’d recommend Crispo, Gonzo, Pastis, Mesa Grill, Babbo, or Minetta Tavern (if you can get in).

Hope this helps and welcome to the neighborhood!

  11. Rodalpho says:

Oh also– for burgers you’ve got BLT burger, corner bistro (overrated, but I like their double-fisted mcsorley beers), and my personal favorite burger creations.

  12. Seth says:

    Welcome to the neighborhood

    From 24/Park

  13. Boxeenies:

Welcome to the neighborhood (IBM has a floor in 11th Madison, on 24th St).

Since I’m experimenting with Boxee, Netflix & Hulu for cable cord cutting, would be delighted to upgrade from the alpha to the beta.

Would also be interested in the Boxee Box. Considering the Mac Mini route, but like the idea of something specifically designed around this promising new service.

  14. zack says:

    bienvenidos!

coffee – get thee to http://twitter.com/vlaic 6th and 22nd in the mornings, 5th and 23rd after that. also tarraluci e vino on 18th, but grumpy might be better and closer to you than t e v.

old town bar has a good burger, although you’re awfully close to shake shack too, which is much better.

    +1 to dirty bird

rainbow falafel on 17th, maoz falafel on park

    popeye’s on 14th near 6th I think for a cheap cheap meal

some of these might be a stretch, we’re over on 19th and bway.

if you want to be fancy one day walk over to the gramercy tavern (early), sit in the bar area and order the soup & sandwich special. You will not be disappointed.

  15. Rodalpho says:

You know, I’ve tried La Nacional, and I know it’s well-reviewed and everybody wants them to stay in business and everything, but I just wasn’t impressed. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but the seafood paella and garlic shrimp are pretty standard choices.

For Spanish, I would head to casa mono on irving place or even better, to Despana. Despana is AMAZING. But it’s all the way down in soho, and if we expand our suggestions that far my list will be like 20 pages long.

  16. alan says:

Can people come visit you guys (and possibly wrangle a boxee beta invite) ?

  17. Leo Aranda says:

If I worked so close to Chelsea Market I would live there. Best coffee in the area is right there (Ninth Espresso). All the places for lunch there are great.

  18. Dave says:

Congratulations on your move! I’m sure you will love it in your new digs.

  19. ben says:

Maffei Pizza on 22nd and 6th has some of my favorite pizza in the city

  20. Patrick says:

So next move is to open an office in Seattle as well, right?

  21. Matt Cope says:

I wonder what the lunch fare is at the Museum of Sex, just a few blocks up…

  22. Andrew Carre says:

You guys are coffee crazy! Your always talking about coffee in your posts LMAO!

  23. Joe V says:

Welcome to the area! If you need a server/desktop/jack of all trades tech guy let me know :)

  24. Hey if you need any help with your wiring and stuff, or if you need the lan certified I’d be happy to volunteer some time for you… I do a lot of high-end work, but the network certification can be so important… I use a Validator NT 655 which runs about $1900…

Oh and of course, I could bring lots of Jolt & Bawls :) .

In the unlikely event you don’t know about it, also make sure to check out Microcenter which is about 10 minutes over the GWB. It’s like walking into newegg.com for real… Saved me when all the other guys like compusa and stuff went under since I need things generally immediately for my work…

  25. Brian August says:

Congrats, Avner. Would love to come by and say hello after CES.

  26. Nick says:

Welcome to the neighborhood! I’m with a digital marketing firm, interested in chatting about advertising/marketing opps.

  27. Kate Black says:

Rye House is dangerously close. 17th St between 5th & 6th.

It’s a little pricey for everyday fare, but SO good. Excellent cocktails made with American spirits, and an interesting take on American foods.

  28. Chris says:

tapas – Boqueria is my favorite in the city. If you like a little spicy, the pimentos de padron (blistered shishito peppers w/ coarse sea salt) is amazing.

bars – There is flatiron lounge if you want to have some highend drinks in the realm of mixology. And for after work/casual black door is pretty awesome.

  29. not sure is anyone had mentioned this or not cause im not going to read all those comments but your right next to Bistro Truck. Burgers are great for the price and better than most sit down places.

  30. also awesome ramen noodle place at 23rd and lex. it a little bit of a walk but totally worth it.

    Terakawa Ramen

  31. David says:

The new Grey Dog coffee on 16th btwn 7th and 8th is a good spot to check out too (http://www.yelp.com/biz/grey-dogs-coffee-manhattan). Cozy atmosphere, great food.

  32. John says:

Joe Jrs – 18th and 3rd. It is the jam.

  33. John says:

scratch that – too far away. Elephant Castle is great…but you also can’t go wrong with Chipotle.

  34. DEFme says:

Plenty of awesome pizza shops in that area. You can throw a stone and hit 10 pizza places before it lands. Congrats on the NYC location, best of luck.

    • avner ronen says:

i don’t know. i am very particular about my Pizza. lots of Pizza places have slices that are too oily, cheese not up to par, sauce.. it’s a simple dish, but the ingredients make a huge difference.

  35. Brian says:

    dogmatic – sausages with sustainable meat – 17th and B’way – eatdogmatic.com

Nam Pang (12th and University) – Cambodian sandwiches – numpangnyc.com – too far?

‘wichcraft (20th and 5th) – this location has dinner too

taim – Israeli sandwiches – 7th and Perry – too far?

    Pret – 17th and B’way

and +1 on you should open an office in Seattle – lots of great food too!

  36. Michelle says:

It’s a shame we won’t be sharing office space any more, but I’ll definitely meet you at Grumpy for a cup of coffee! By the way, the Mayor there is a VERY good friend of mine. He takes is Grumpy mayorship as seriously as he does going to the gym, so he’s going to be tough competition!

  37. Jwoww says:

can’t wait to get my boxxx like these girls http://bit.ly/sportsknockers

  38. Shahar says:

Avner – for coffee lovers Porto Rico Importing Company is a must. It is in West Village but well worth the walk.

Good luck @ CES … I hope Boxee can partner with some leading TV manufacturers.
