We launched our public alpha for Mac/Linux in January at CES. During the show we met with several device manufactures interested in embedding Boxee into their existing devices or building a dedicated Boxee device.
I am very happy to announce we have signed our first partnership with a CE company. At this point we can not say more about the partner or the specs of the device, but we can tell you we are working closely with them to make sure we deliver a great Boxee experience on it.
We will show mockups of the box and share more details at our upcoming Boxee Beta Unveiling event in Brooklyn, NY on Dec 7th. RSVP here.
Over the next few years there will be a great change in the way we consume entertainment on our TV. The Internet is (finally) coming to the TV and with it will come a whole new world of content, applications and innovations.
We are building Boxee as a platform that would:
- make it easy for users to consume and find content – no matter what the source
- give content owners, aggregators, and developers the tools to create unique experiences with a variety of business models
- enable CE companies to enhance their Connected devices
This will be the first connected device running Boxee, but the idea is to provide consumers with a way to get Boxee in their living rooms, no matter whether it’s on a Connected TV, game console, set-top box, BluRay player, computer, etc.
Our goal is to be on every Connected device in the living room.
We are very excited about the partnership and looking forward to sharing more at the event.

Will here be a DVR component?
you mean for recording cable/sat or for Internet streams?
This is great news! Can't wait to see what is coming up!
can't wait to show it
Well I was just going to post on how yippee we won the ATV point release battle with Apple just to load a buggy Boxee up and have it immediately lock up and crash — forcing a terminal commanded reboot. Please don't let this distract you from making a better app.
I honestly wish Boxee worked as well as the community wants it to. People hate cable so much they'll accept an alpha as good enough.
we hope to make a major improvement with the beta, and then make further improvements with usability, performance and stability in time for the box
This is great news and many of us have been (im)patiently waiting for this!
One suggestion: please put a MythTV front end on this.
thanks for being patient. i believe there are a couple of people working on improving the integration with MythTV
Congrats. Great news Avner!
I've got some content distribution and engagement ideas that I'd like to pick your brain about. DM me on Twitter if you have any interest/time.
sure. you can also email me
Slap some DVR capabilities and i'll buy 2.
I love Boxee – and Drobo. Would be great to see a Boxee Drobo app on the Droboshare because that's where all my media resides.
today do you just access the Drobo over SMB?
I'm stoked to hear about this. Although boxee works on the AppleTV, it's not the greatest experience having to work around Apple's strong arm w/ the constant updates trying to wipe boxee out.
I believe this new box will also support Netflix? So happy to hear about this, congrats guys!
thanks. the goal is to bring all our existing partners to the box (and a few more..)
can't wait!
The announcement made it to betanews:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Boxees-first-offi…
I WANT ONE
OMG!!! I am dancing on my desk right now! A dedicated Boxee would rock! I would get one for each room in my house and a couple of extra for reserve. I am proud of you guys at Boxee you came so far. I really hope you succeed in uncensored, free(I forgot the terminology) web growth. Congratulations guys, a step closer to the mainstream!
The only suggest that if the wireless on the Boxee oem hardware is wireless-N(for the HD video) and compatible with 5.0ghz band(I got 10 different 2.4ghz networks around me).
Other than that I think you guys got it down
.
thanks for the love! we are streaming HD over our home networks, too. so we hear you.
Great news !! Got Boxee last year and cancelled my satellite sub. Already paid for
my ATV many times over.
A simpler wifi enabled Boxee would mean even more freedom of content choices.
Chapeau Boxee !
Avner, the $64,000 question is, will this box have enough power to play Hulu and Netflix? Many Atom/Ion boxes are pretty flaky like this. Any ideas? Thanks!
we are working closely with the device maker to make sure that video playback will be smooth. we'll get there.
Are you communicating with Nvidia/Adobe about their Flash/vdpau acceleration ?
If it has Netflix support, you have one more sure buyer!
I'll definitely buy one of these! Got a V box from Virgin Media at the moment and it is so disappointing. Given the choice between fighting with the V box or watching a show through Boxee on my Linux box, Boxee wins everytime!
Having a dedicated box for my TV with just Boxee on it will be wonderful! This + Freeview HD which is coming to the UK means a very bright future for TV.
Also I'd like to echo the cry for DVR capabilities on this box!
Thanks Boxee for a great product and the promise of further great future products!
wish we had Freeview in the US..
we're hearing more and more about DVR. it will sure help to make Boxee a complete solution.
Congratulations on the announcement – looking forward to the event!
should be good. make sure to bring friends. we hope people will be willing to cross the river from Manhattan..
DVR feature should be included, there is just so much cable/TV content you should be able to decide the best time to watch!
yes, most of the content is still only available through Cab/Sat. will take a while for all of it to make its way to the Internet
Good news!
Will the box be available in Europe?
eventually yes. not sure whether the box will be available there at the beginning.
Hallelujah! Cable and sat providers beware … the end is near (insert menacing laugh here).
The Boxee Box will need have enough horsepower to run Boxee and the video content along with Ethernet and Wireless connectivity.
Ideally it will include the ability to run other Windows 7 apps as well.
So is this using a Broadcom chip and making use of the development that davilla over at xbmc.org has been involved with (for an AppleTV hack requiring a Broadcom GPU upgrade)?
And what will this be priced at? The Acer AspireRevo at $200 (+ $25 approx for a USB IR receiver/remote) is the one to beat right now, IMHO.
Oh, and will this play Hulu content smoothly?
I'm guessing that I'll have to wait until 12/7 to find out the answers to any of these questions.
sorry we can't disclose more info at this stage. we should be able to say/show more on Dec 7th. hope you can make it to the event (or watch it live)
To hell with boxes, just get it onto xbox and playstation and wii and tivo, somehow!
nothing we would love more than to have Boxee run on Xbox/PS3/Wii. the only issue is that they need to allow it..
Have you seen PS3's attempt at the iPlayer? It's laughable.
I'd love to see this. And soon. So sick of my AppleTV. Been debating about buying a Revo to run Boxee on. Just wish it had built-in wifi and IR. It's definitely priced right. Hopefully Boxee keeps that in mind, too.
YES YES YES YES. Mark my words Apple. If you don't open up, in the next few years you will go down.
Colour me disappointed. IMNSHO, this is a mistake. In the Marketing world, this is known as making the "pie smaller".
-ski
why do you think we are making the pie smaller?
we believe it is important that we will work with the CE companies to bring Boxee into a variety of connected devices. providing a much needed platform for the CE makers and a great experience for the user.
Why just do not buy some nettop like Acer Asparevo or ASUS Eee Desktop and install Boxee there? Also Myka, for example, is shipped with Boxee and XBMC. I don't see anything special and useful in dedicated Boxee box.
we think netbook and net-tops are great platforms to run Boxee on, and we're working to make sure Boxee will run smoothly on these devices, but we don't want to limit Boxee to these platforms.
@Michael: some of us just want a device we can turn on without having to deal with endless security updates and maintenance. I've considered buying a Revo and loading Boxee but I don't want to maintain yet another computer on my network just for watching tv shows and movies. I want an easy to use appliance more than anything when it's going to be in my living room and my wife and kid are going to be using it as well.
Might be time to retire the AppleTV when this baby comes out…
how about boxee for the astone ap-100
Oh, I would so love it if this were going on an aTV, along with a way to connect an EyeTV tuner to it, (better still have a digital tuner with cable card capability built-in,) and Apple finally approving it to access iTunes downloads, that for me would cause me to purchase several of these the day they come out, especially if it were a PVR/DVR as well!!!
Looks like what I've been waiting for.
OK! Your timing is perfect. We are designing our home network
to replace our Dish feed and needed a 'box' to serve media
with a small maintenance footprint. We are very
interested in purchasing one and, based on our experiences,
also very interested in the maintenance model.
Congratulations and watch out! The world is coming to you Boxer!
Hey Avner, will it be available in Europe (specially Italy)? If not, we are interested in reseller/partnership agreements. Let's talk, let us know. And congratulations on the achievement
Giovani – TFF – Rome.
Can you say when/if this beta will be released to the public?
it will be open to everyone on Jan 7th
Avner,
I am a custom A/V integrator and absolutely LOVE boxee. Even though we do not make any money on the product I love showing / installing the product to our clients.
We say that boxee blows kaleidescape away and it also just saved them $20,000 dollars.
Thanks again,
Jerry.
Let me know if you need any beta testers….
wow. thanks!
sorry you can't make any extra money installing Boxee.
maybe there is an opportunity for you if you make some sort of custom Crestron integration?
btw, we will open our early-access list soon.
We currently use Control4 for our "brain".
Great thing is that they have an XBMC plugin in LUA script any I'm sure modifying it to run Boxee should be somewhat easy (i hope).
Thanks again….
Jerry
XenHome
Avner, congrats on the amazing news. I am looking forward to getting one just to support the project. One question I do have is what file formats and containers will it support (avi, mpeg2, HD), and will this box be powerful enough for HD divx, mkv etc??
the answer is: yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes
Congrats Avner! I will buy one just to support the project. One question, will this box be powerful enough to support HD avi's and mkv's??
yup. hardware acceleration ftw.
I love the interface, but wish I could use it for streaming media to my TV from a remote PC. Everything is on my office system, which I have networked to my PS3. I'd much prefer the Boxee GUI to what I've got now.
Please make it a lower power usage device, as I'm trying to get all my computer devices down as low as I can.
we have discussed it with our CE partner. sustainability is important for us.
Thanks.Post your views on httP://www.remainstressfree.blogspot.com also
Finally a box that will allow us to enjoy our media. I posted a little blurb on my site and on my forums.
just read your post
thanks! we will do our best to deliver.
Sounds great! I hope it has built in wireless N and is availiable in the UK. Like everyone has already said , DVR would be great especially with the Boxee interface because there aren't any good DVRs in the UK at the moment and I think it'll take a while before any manufacturers make a decent Freeview HD recorder with dual tuners.
What would be great, a version that:
- is $100 (we got more than one TV and seems silly if it costs the same or more than an xbox360).
- has OS and internal storage on upgradable SD card (no internal harddrive… save that for lan/usb/esata).
- has generous amount of ram for caching.
- has IR receiver and remote.
- can quickly startup and standby with the remote. Kids are not going to wait a few minutes for the 'tv' to get ready, especially when they are use to the speed of xbmc on the original xbox.
- is rock stable (think appliance). The last thing is want is to resort to connecting a keyboard or logging in over ssh to fix a problem… with the kids and wife glaring.
- full audio channels over hdmi
Oh gawd, if some sort of mouse cursor needs to be controlled on the screen, then this is definitely not for my family, unless you can make the controls Wii-like.
hi anver,
Good news…love boxee
let me know if you have some room for alpha tester as well with box, my expertize will be of some use…
Awesome. Looking forward to it. Please make this available in the UK as early as possible.
Will it have ssh out of the box? Since we'll still be in beta after Jan 7th I can imagine needing to tweak things like i do at the moment over ssh.
Are you still going to have several optional extras? like an optional DVD/Bluray drive, and optional TV Tuner. And keep the price of the most basic box as cheap as possible.
we are working with the CE partner to make the device as extensible as possible, so we could support multiple add-ons.
I was thinking about getting an Apple TV, but now this. I will definitely get one!
The reason I like the AppleTV is because it has such a super simple remote and UI.
My nightmare would be a hardware unit with a loud fan and an oversized remote (numbers 0-9, volumebuttons, yadda yadda). I would never ever buy that.
Keep it simple. Maybe even let me use the Apple Remote somehow. There are perfect opensource drivers for this on debian. Just an idea.
we will work with our CE partners to make it simple. we will not always have much control.
will this new box include netflix and/or Hulu? i was planning on purchasing a roku player but if this new boxee box will have both hulu and netflix, then i would definetly wait to purchase the boxee, seeing as how both netflix and hulu have become major partners in my viewing habits.
the idea would be for the the Boxee version running on embedded devices to provide the same feature set as the one used on computers
