Our NYC office is at Park Ave & 28th right above FIKA, which is where we get our morning/mid-morning/post-lunch/4pm/evening servings of cappuccino and macchiato. The fact that there is good coffee downstairs was a critical decision factor for us when we chose the location of our office.
Now there is a new coffee bar in our neighborhood, and it is GREAT!! Stumptown (from Portland, OR) opened this Monday. It is on Broadway and 29th, so a few blocks away from our office, but worth the trip at least once (or twice) a day.
My favorite coffee places in NYC (by no particular order):
- La Colombe
- Gimme Coffee (i also use their beans at home)
- 9th Street Espresso
- Stumptown
- Cafe Grumpy

Being from portland, I can agree that Stumptown is fantastic and worth a couple block walk
yes. i also plan to buy beans from them. i have high hopes! hope my espresso machine can do it justice.
I live in Seattle and Stumptown is my favorite. The bomb!
Having lived 4 years in Ithaca, NY where Gimme comes from I have to say they are also a big fav of mine. The mexico blend kicks ass.
will check it out. we try to buy only organic, fair-trade, shade-grown beans..
Sounds Great! I can't wait to try it.
Wow. Creepy. My office is on 31st and Park and I too have a coffee addiction. I recently discovered FIKA but Stumptown has won me over. They've been open less than a week and i'm already on a first name basis there! What's with the great coffee shops in this area? You should also try Keko cafe on Madison (between 31st and 30th). Great coffee and european soccer games year round.
i’ll try Keko, too (we need to get European soccer games on Boxee, too). thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the tip. I too work in the area and am excited to try these guys out.
I'm an old fan of La Colombe. Was a regular there when I lived in Philly.
It's encouraging to see NYC finally stepping up its coffee game. When I moved here 11 years ago great coffee was impossible to come by. You can now almost count them on two hands, which is a huge improvement.
On a weekend or whenever you are strolling the East Village, try Abraço on 7th St and 1st Ave (http://www.yelp.com/biz/abraco-new-york)... I actually don't drink coffee, but my wife does and she says it's the best. We live half way up the block.
No coffee for me but absolutely love Boxee!! Keep up the good job.
I'm mixed about Stumptown in NYC. On the one hand it's great to see Stumptown finding new fans wherever they might live. On the other hand, it was always great knowing that the PNW had vastly superior coffee to NYC (I say that having spent more than my fair share of time in NYC). Fortunately, we still have Salumi all to ourselves! You New Yorkers can keep Mario Batali – everyone knows his dad is the real culinary genius.
LOL we'll keep Mario Batali and you keep Starbucks. deal?
Can't wait till I get back to NYC, Love the coffee and salumi, please Stumptown come to SF, I only have 4 barrel, and we remember where they got their beans from don't we.
Yes Stumptown is a wonderful shop here in Portland (the downtown one serves beer late in the day and has DJ's), but that's pretty standard fare around here. There are a few one-off shops in PDX that may trump them on technique or specifics, but in general they are top notch and you can always count on a good cup. Also they only brew French Press for their regular coffee so even that is superior in flavor.
stumptown is standard fare are Portland? sounds like a place where coffee lovers go to when they die.
i must come visit.
