eTVnet.ca (Ethnic Television Network) on boxee

eTVnet provides on-line access to thousands of Russian television programs. they represent more than 12 most popular Russian channels. there are both “On demand” and live programming. this is a subscription based service with several packages to choose from.

Mike Kantor has a PC in his living room and wanted a remote-driven experience for watching eTVnet on his TV, so he wrote a boxee app for it.

Mike Kantor in his own words:

I am a programmer and medical physics researcher in Houston, TX. My background is in physics and math, but I am also self-taught in many programming languages and web/computer technology, and picked up Python about 2 years ago.

My family brought me to the US from Russia in 1993, at the age of 10. Many of them still enjoy following Russian events, celebrities, talk shows, etc. Recently I’ve set up some HTPCs for this task, using the etvnet.ca website. It is quite inconvenient to browse etvnet by mouse and keyboard. The online Boxee documentation showed me that there were many flexibilities available in the GUI and the backend, so I saw that the app would’ve been possible, and jumped in.

After finishing the app, I now have my eye on a few more specific to my work life. One I am looking at in particular would be a viewer of CT images in DICOM format.

Thanks a lot for the plugin, Mike! Are you the only maintainer for it? Do you plan to keep it up to date in case eTVnet changes its listing format?

I'm asking since based on availability of this plugin I will recommend AppleTV to a few people instead of setting up a PC.

(Posting question here since can't find any other way to find boxee specific Mike Kantor)

Guys, be very careful with etvnet since they started stealing money from my credit card in about 4 months after I stopped using their service.

      • Mikhail says:

        Hey Andrew!

Unless you actually call or write thme to stop the service they will charge you if you are on a subscription plan. I never jad any problems with their charges.

I love it too. Please keep it up to date and add more features.

I'm missing "change server", "trial account" interface and some more.

Perhaps, eTVnet should also release some kind API to make our live easier.

You can easily install this plugin by doing the following:

      2. Go to the App Box.

      3. In the New Applications screen you'll see all the available applications which weren't installed yet as well as eTV. Click on eTV.

      4. When asked whether you want to add the applications, click OK and then confirm.

Then select Applications >Video from the Boxee Menu to view the new plugin..

      enjoy..
