BBC Live on boxee

we had the BBC’s iPlayer on boxee for a while, which is a great service for boxee users based in the UK (unfortunately users outside the UK can’t enjoy it), but now thanks to Ian Tweedie there is also BBC Live!

as Ian mentions below boxee is lacking in both UK content and live content in general. i hope this is just the beginning and that over the next few months both boxee and the dev community will bring more content in both categories.

Ian Tweedie in his own words:

Well what can i say I’m just a normal guy living in the UK trying my best to find a job whilst using my free time to learn and tryout fun, new things, like coding etc, and the Dev challenge seemed the perfect excuse to dive in, because if that TV isn’t electronic heaven, i don’t know what is.

The idea for BBC Live comes from the fact that apart from the IPlayer there isn’t really a large selection of applications for users outside of the United States.Though this will change in time, i wanted to be the first to bring Live TV to boxee and unless I’m incorrect, i have done that.

As for how easy it was to build, what can i say , i read through the documentation and the sample apps for
about a week or two before deciding to have ago my self, its really wasn’t too difficult, taking about 10 hours. BBC Live is just a simple application that does exactly what it needs to and i hope boxee users enjoy it

Brilliant work I’ll be testing this out as soon as I get home. Well done and good luck on the job search. If you now left with a gap in your daily routine how about looking at 4OD and Ch5 player ;) hehehe

    Thanks very much again.

    Ian,
Well good job if you have brought BBC to Boxee users in the UK, but unless you left out mentioning it was only for those IN the UK, it doesn’t work for those of English speakers
    in France.
Pls be explicit, but thanks just the same

      Sorry,

The BBC’s streams (from the IPlayer website) are only available to those with a UK IP address. These streams are what this application uses.

i mentioned it in the blog post “unfortunately users outside the UK can’t enjoy it”, but we should fix it so the boxee client will tell the user in case he is trying to access content that is geo-blocked

I know it was mentioned in the blog post, maybe it was misread.

Currently the application seems to be having problems running on Apple TV though i am looking into this.

    Hi,

    This is a great idea.

Can someone do the same with the live feed (in French, English and Arab) of France 24?
France 24 is not restricted by any specific ip address.

Can this app be tweaked so we could put the live feed of France 24?

    Thanks

    Sebastien

I will look into this, i don’t think i have finished tweaking the app yet and updates are sure to come. The addition of new channels is more then likely going to happen. You never no BBC Live may change to Europe Live or something along those lines in the months to come lol.

I think this app will be a contender, but I wish it would work for all outside of UK. Anyway, excellent job and keep up the great work.

  6. Howard says:

Doesn’t work for me on Apple TV, just goes black after clicking on choice…

  7. Ian says:

Sorry, its a known issue which is being looked into. Please check the forums for latest news regarding developments.
