DropBoxee (drop.io on boxee) by Jon Steinberg

i always found it weird that with the evolution of the Internet over the past decade people are still using good ol’ FTP to share files, me included. that was until i discovered drop.io, which makes it super easy to share stuff.

i have been talking with Sam Lessin from drop.io about doing something together for a while, but we’re both limited in resources and trying our best to stay focused. never got around to getting it done…. then along comes Jon Steinberg, an avid boxee/drop.io user that saw the dev challenge and decided to take matters into his own hands :)

Jon came up with the idea for DropBoxee and found and hired Nick Perez over ODesk.  Using the drop.io API and the boxee API Nick built DropBoxee, which provides a clean and simple way for accessing a drop and playing all the shared video, music and photos.

both Sam and i were really excited to see it. now we get to bug Jon and Nick with feature requests! i am already putting together a wishlist.. DropBoxee is already available on the App Box for you to play with.

you can read all about it (and watch a screencast of DropBoxee) here.

I don't get it.. what is this? it uploads files to your dropbox account and then has boxee scrape your dropbox account so these files show up in boxee's menu? is drop.io not related to drop box? I'm confused :|

drop.io enables you to upload files to a central location, and then lets you (others) access these files from anywhere (boxee included).

dropbox is a different type of service, which would also be cool to see an app for on boxee.

right now you can easily access a dropbox folder on boxee. you'll need to add that folder as one of your media sources.

guess it's on a need to know basis/the boxee community–no idea

  3. Nick says:

very simply – drop.io is an upload service, along the lines of Rapidshare/Megaupload, but instead of being limited to downloading locally, you're free to stream the media that you upload. when you upload stuff, it creates a url, similar to a tinyurl (called a "drop"). this is where all of your files are located.

so Dropboxee enables you to open up boxee, navigate to your drop where you uploaded stuff, and play it all in boxee. hopefully that clears things up for those who don't get it.

Is there a site where we can learn about Boxee apps without having to add them and try them out in Boxee first?

Will it work with apple tv and how?

    Could you answer following questions:

1.) Will computer have to be turned on all the time to watch media on apple tv?

2.) Will it transfer files via wifi like itunes to apple tv or will apple tv play it from internet (no good as one would use lots of bandwidth)?
