announcing the boxee app dev challenge

the new boxee API enables developers to build and publish apps for boxee users. while people are working on a variety of boxee apps, we thought it would be a good idea to provide some extra incentive for the developers.
the boxee dev challenge will have 3 categories: Video, Music and Photos.Â
in each category we will have a People’s Choice award and a Judge’s Choice award:
People’s Choice Award: Drobo + 4TB from Seagate
Judge’s Choice Award:Â Sony Bravia XBR9 46″
the deadline for submitting your application is June 14th at 11:59pm PT, but we encourage you to submit early and often as we’ll be talking up cool applications as they come in.
voting will take place between June 15th – June 22nd.
on June 23rd will have a boxee event in San Francisco (RSVP here) announcing the People’s Choice and our esteemed judges will choose a winner from the 10 most popular apps in each category.
the judges at the event will be:
Veronica Belmont - Tekzilla, Qore
Ryan Block - GDGT, former EIC Engadget
Cali Lewis – host of geekbrief.tv
Avner Ronen - boxee founder and CEO
looking for more info on how to develop boxee apps: check out http://developer.boxee.tv and take a look at the sample app (we will publish additional sample apps). please submit your app to dev_challenge@boxee.tv.
whether you’re a developer or just a boxee fan, we look forward to seeing you @ the event. RSVP here.
* the challenge is open to residents of the milky-way galaxy except for employees of boxee, and any other organizations involved in sponsoring the contest, as well as their parent, subsidiary, affiliated and successor companies, and those employees’ immediate family and household members. exceptions extend also to those who think they might become a boxee employee, or an employee of the aforementioned parent, subsidiary, affiliated, or succesor companies in the future. “Immediate family members” of employees shall mean their parents, step-parents, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, pets and spouses. “Household members” of employees shall mean people who share the employee’s residence at least three months a year sleeping on a couch or a bed (blow up mattresses do not ap.)

I think it would be great to see someone step up and create an app for http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl. I think a lot of people feel the same way
!
FYI; there is already a very popular python script for XBMC for this, and that script could probably be ported to Boxee, see:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25522
and
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28364
The script itself supports plugins as ‘channels’ so it is expandable.
How about a playlist app? I’m not even sure its possible but I’d love to see playlists incorporated into Boxee, especially playlists that could combine local and internet content together in a seamless experience. Lets see IPTV channels with playlist style programming.
Have you heard of echodio? It allows you to stream and synchronize a playlist with Boxee and other platforms too. I haven’t used it, mainly because it only allows you to synchronize that one “Echodio” playlist while I have multiple playlists that I’ve already created… I might test it out, but just haven’t gotten around to it.
Guys – for our first beta release, we decided to sandbox the sync logic into a separate ‘Echodio’ playlist. Feedback on the stability of the sync and duplicate resolution logic has been extremely positive, so in the next 2-3 weeks we’ll be adding multiple playlist and whole library sync to the client. That’s going to make it a lot more useful for folk (follow us on twitter (@echodio) to get notified when that build is out).
In parallel, we’re also working on a native Boxee plugin, so you’ll get full two-way sync to iTunes of your ratings, playlists, etc – directly from the Boxee UI. That will follow later this summer.
Thanks – as always we welcome your feedback here or to feedback@echodio.com

Sounds great! I’d love to see some recommendation app, like TasteKid: http://tastekid.com/
Uitzendinggemist +1
SBS and RTL Gemist +10
vh1 and mtv tv shows or one for streamingepisodes.com !!!! that would be epic
I declare whoever writes a Netflix scraper (Netflix’s database of DVD info is far more valuable than IMDB’s movie listings) the winner, hands down. I’ll even buy the damn Drobo for them.
i love a way to search across all apps for various shows/programs instead of having to open each “channel”
maybe a boxee star rating or tag system.
I know it’s Music, Videos and Photos, but why aren’t there games as well? It seems like it’d be fairly trivial to set up an emulator frontend so we could browse roms like we do movies or TV shows. I’d love to be able to play all my NES, SNES, etc through boxee.
THAT would make me freak out like a litte boy
Does Boxee already have a way of allowing TV tuners to work with it? I know it sounds like I’m suggesting that Boxee should become another MythTV, but I’m just suggesting that an app be made for those who want that option instead of it being built in to Boxee. Boxee is already great for internet media, why not include OTA media? Radio tuners too?
there is an EyeTV plugin which reportedly works (haven’t tested it myself). check it out at http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=2959
I’m not sure if anyone has looked at this yet, but there’s great potential for a Boxee Dev Challenge application that uses The Daily Show with Jon Stewart web site.
Rather than accessing The Daily Show with Jon Stewart via Hulu, a Boxee application could pick up the content right from The Daily Show web site.
That would allow views by Date, Guest, Clip, Topic, etc. The app could also implement the cool time line view on the web site where you can see what days have new episodes, etc.
Could be very cool !
finally submitted our app to the video category for pwndcast.com look for us!
I have one question can we integrate boxee API in asp .net please help me regarding this. we have to integrate it with using .net application. If you find anything just mail me on milind@cybercomcreation.com
