new boxee version for Ubuntu, update for Mac and Apple TV
with every new version Ubuntu is inching closer to mainstream appeal, which is why we chose it as boxee’s Linux distro. we are very happy to release a new version of boxee for Ubuntu, including support for Jaunty Jackalope (9.04).
this update for Ubuntu brings it up to par with the Mac version, including:
- new XUL-based boxee browser (with Hulu support)
- Pandora and RadioTime for the best in Internet and traditional radio
- App Box, the beginnings of the boxee app store
there is also a bug fixing version for Mac and Apple TV available for download (we made some fixes to the boxee browser to better support Flash sites – improved performance, less jittering and less crashes).
for Ubuntu, if you already have an older version installed, the new update will automatically show as a package update, like any other software installed. if this is your first time installing boxee for Ubuntu, go to http://app.boxee.tv/download for setup instructions.
for Mac, the update will show up in boxee, allowing for a direct install. you can also download this version manually at http://app.boxee.tv/download.
for Apple TV, exit boxee, and update the version via the Launcher. we also highly recommend you update the Launcher to the latest and greatest 3.0 version.
next up for us is the Windows release, which we hope to release and open to the public in June.

Woot! I’m going to go update my Apple TV right now.
I am getting Boxee exited with error code: 1 once I updated on my appletv (Using the new launcher)
this can be resolved by deleting your user profile. see forum thread http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=13301 under known caveats.

I can’t wait to try this on Windows! (I tried it on Ubuntu but the application kept quitting; could be a video card issue, or it could be a system issue, I’m not sure.)

Why does it take longer to release Boxee for Ubuntu than it does for Mac? I though it would all be the same code base so synchronized releases should be easy. Maybe I don’t understand something in how Boxee works.
while it is generally the same code, its really not. there are several differences with each os we want to support.

boxee is not available for 64bit linux natively. http://forum.boxee.tv has a few options that may work, such as building your own binary, running under a chrooted 32bit env, and more. this is unsupported at this time, sorry.

does it work with Intrepid the older vesion had problems with pulse audio, but it was fine on hardy

hopefully this fixes the issues i’ve had with boxee on my AppleTV. i’ve noticed issues where if i get a video to load the framerate is horrible (like half of what it should be) and eventually the audio gets out of sync and is crackly… (this happened on a comedy central video) i don’t even try hulu feeds because they will never load or are too unstable. it seems like the more they update boxee the less stable it becomes. and we begin to notice the limitations of the appletv… i’ve been using xbmc in the mean time as its much more stable on aTV but doesn’t have near the functionality.
atv has an issue where different units behave differently when rendering video. change under settings > video > player, and it should fix it.
Still waiting on 64 bit Linux release. And waiting. ‘Next up: Windows version.’ Good grief.
Nice to see a Ubuntu jaunty release,but I run the 64 bit version! Sigh.
Could you release a RPM package for other distributions? I switch from ubuntu to Mandriva and i really like this distribution, but i miss Boxee, is the best media center for linux and mac….
Im not a technical user, i dont want to compile nothing and other many user neither… Come on guys, you are doing exactly the thing why linux isn´t popular…. u have a great software but dont put it at the hand of the end user… media entertainment is for all, nor technical and are leaving out some distributions that are really fiendly with the user, in some case better than ubuntu… please make it global, like skype, like opera, like firefox, etc…. all popular software….You are technicals, we the final user dont..
