introducing the boxee API

we are very excited to officially release the boxee API. it is a big part of our mission to bring open-source and the creativity of the Internet to the living room. the guys over at boxeehq have been able to build impressive stuff without real documented tools, so we’re excited to see what developers will do with a full-blown API complete with documentation.

the new boxee API enables developers to build sophisticated applications (such as the Pandora and RadioTime apps) using a set of API calls in Python and writing the GUI using XML.

we started boxee based on features and content we wanted in our own living rooms.
we introduced additional content and features based on user feedback.
we have created the new API to further democratize the process.
we want to provide developers with easy tools to create new applications and share them.

users can install new applications via the boxee App Box, the beginnings of our app store. unlike other app stores, boxee does not want to be a gate keeper (or bottleneck) in deciding which applications are published so anyone can become a publisher.  publishers can each create a different “repository” of applications they host.  to add an app from their repository, just add it to “my repositories” in boxee. for example, boxeehq publishes their applications using their own repository (“dir.boxeehq.com”).

we’ve also set up a developer section on the boxee forum and are looking forward to hearing your feedback on the API, issues you are having, stuff you would like us to add or do differently, etc. the forum is also a good place to connect with other boxee developers and share information about what you’re working on.

Thank you. I figured out the basics by looking at the code yesterday…

  2. Abdul Qabiz says:

That's really cool. Thanks for it.

  3. Damien says:

Ive coded a bit in Java but more heavily in web design, however I do have a few things I would like to try to make for Boxee! Is python really that simple?

    Guess I'll take a look! :P

What GREAT timing. I've been threatening to learn a little programing. My programmer friends kept saying just pick something you want to learn and start at it. LOVE Boxee and have a few ideas for 'apps' I'd like to make for Boxee. Finally found my jumping point for learning some programing. Hello Python!

  5. John says:

Awesome, but let's get on PC and become relevant to the mass markets.

  6. Belovedmonster says:

WordPress Matt once said that if you look at all the successful companies in the internet age they are the ones that allowed other people to make money off their platform. I totally agree with him and I think you guys have have introduced the killer feature here.

  7. mwpei says:

We need more help in the developer section, there does not seem to be any boxee developers looking at the forms so no one answers any of the real programming questions.

Also some examples would go a long way in helping people out.

    Hi!!

I have some question about implementation of boxee API ? The question is listed bellow.

[01]. Can we Implement Boxee API In web 2.0 (ASP .net 2.0)

[02]. If Yes Then Please Provide What we need to implement the API in .net ?

[03]. Do We need SSL for implementation ?

[04]. Also provide some more information like how to call function in API ?

[05]. Also please provide some more details about the web service or API Implementation in .net

    Regards,

    Milind Kansagara.

  45. [...] Not that there should be any shock surrounding the formal introduction of boxee’s App Box and API — after all, both were teased sufficiently during last month’s bleeding edge alpha release — but we’re still thrilled to see things moving along nicely. This week, the open source media platform launched both an API and an application portal, both of which will act to bring all manners of third-party gems to the media browsing world. boxee doesn’t plan on being any sort of gatekeeper (at least for now), which hopefully will spur innovation and get more developers interested. In related news, ArsTechnica has also found that boxee is currently in talks with a few big players in the hardware space, essentially hoping to get its 1s and 0s onto game consoles, Blu-ray players and other set-top-boxes. There’s no clue as to the whens and wheres, but we suspect this means there will be no dedicated STB in the near future — for better or worse.[Via ArsTechnica]Source [...]
