rocking with Pandora at Webster Hall

we are launching a new “bleeding edge” alpha version of boxee during today’s boxee NYC meetup. you can watch it live and join the chat on the Mogulus boxee meetup channel page.

i still remember the first time i used Pandora. it was love at first sound.
now it will be available on boxee! you can listen to your quickmix, your favorite stations and create new stations. music in the living room has never been better.

we love broadcast radio, too. so in this release you will also find RadioTime that lets you listen to over 100,000 radio stations from around the world. boxee will automatically bring up the local stations from your area, and you can set your own presets on radiotime.com.

[warning: geek speak follows]

the Pandora and RadioTime apps were built using a new boxee API. the new API enables developers to build apps using XML pages and Python scripts. developers can now do pretty much whatever they want UI-wise and control the data and metadata around the media.

also in this version is an enhanced version of the boxee browser. it is based on the XUL framework, which means the boxee browser shares the same core architecture as any Mozilla browser (e.g Firefox). we are looking for developers that can help us test the new API. if you’re interested please send us an email to api-test [at] boxee d0t tv.

[end of geek speak]

this version’s boxee browser will display any full HTML page, and will try to play video on the page. for example, if you go to a Hulu RSS feed and click on an episode you will see the Hulu page for a few seconds and then the video will start playing in fullscreen.

the guys over at boxeehq are also releasing their PBS app today. if you want to install it on boxee go to App Box on the main menu, select Repositories and add dir.boxeehq.com. you will see all the boxeehq apps on the New Applications screen.

so for those of you at the meetup – thanks for coming!  for everyone else, download the latest version of boxee to take advantage of all the new content and features.

Wow, can’t wait to try it out tonight. Thanks for the hard work everyone.

    • chris graham says:

guys the new boxee is AWESOME on apple tv! it’s so frickin fast! Love it!!!! way to go!

  2. wonslung says:

when will this be available for linux….we’ve been waiting and i think we all thought the new version would be available today.

  3. Kevin says:

You guys are now adding the one feature I’ve always wanted more than any from Boxee. At this point it makes it worth buying an AppleTV just for installing Boxee. Amazing.

  4. jeff says:

there’s nothing new to download under “downloads” than the “bleeding edge” and old one that have been there for ages. so i don’t get the features avner mentioned, like alternate repositories, PBS, or a better Hulu (although it launches in full screen, video is “unavailable”) or even the pr0n channel he showed!

shouldn’t there be a newer download available?

  5. bmoura says:

Is there a way to download the event video for playback on Boxee vs. Mogulus ?

  6. Ben says:

I downloaded the newest version but when I try to watch a Hulu feed on AppleTv it tells me I need to install the latest version of Flash. I don’t know what to do to fix this…

  7. drew says:

bummer i see indexing wasnt fixed.

  8. simi says:

was hoping for abc support – any idea of when that will be back?

  9. craig says:

Awesome job guys! Now that you have brought Pandora to Boxee, can you please help with getting Boxee’s audio to output to Airfoil. I know Airfoil is closed-source but there has to be a reason Boxee doesn’t work when every other program does. Until this happens, those of us who use our computers to stream audio to remote speakers will continue to use other programs.

  10. KO says:

I am not seeing the 0.9.8.4882 listed in ATV Launcher –> Downloads menu. How do I upgrade to 0.9.8.4882 on ATV?

  11. Ed Hajduk says:

    Thanks Boxee. Great update!

  12. Tom daly says:

He’ll yeah boxee team! Pandora and boxee is like wine and cheese, or peanutbutter and chocolate… Thanks!

  13. Chad says:

Cool to see Pandora expanding. I have it on VUDU, and now I can have it on Boxee too. Awesome.

  14. PookieBadMuffin says:

Would be good if we could get better clarification on updates – version numbers, how-to, etc. Thought there was auto-update with the last version for ATV? Not exactly what I expected, I guess.

Regardless, thanks for the hard work and new additions!

    • tom sella says:

      the latest version is 0.9.10.5534.

if you don’t see it under Downloads in your Launcher, update the Launcher first.

ATV does not do auto update – it does notify you though that there is an update, if you were running the previous test version (guessing not, otherwise your Launcher was up to date as well).

  15. Doug says:

What am I missing? I’m still not getting the Ubuntu update yet. Is there another download that I’m not aware of?

  16. Bill says:

I’m not seeing the updates, either. I THINK I’m updating to the latest 2.3 Launcher… is the ATV finder SUPPOSED to restart after running the Launcher update? Or is the update simply crashing my finder? And, if the latter, is there anything I can do about that?

    • tom sella says:

the 2.3 launcher is pretty solid. i’m guessing you might be out of space or have some fragged file.

you can try to factory restore (boot with menu+minus), and repatch from the latest patch stick, then do the updates.

if that does not work, ssh into the ATV (see forums.boxee.tv), delete /Applications/Boxee.app, factory restore, repatch and update.

  17. beezle says:

as usual windows and linux are the redheaded stepchildren of boxee

    • tom sella says:

please don’t say that. it was very much in our plan to have all platforms ready for the meetup, and i cannot stress it enough how much work went into this release. there is so many changes in the guts of the software to bring you the API and browser, and sadly, at the end of the day, it was either releasing broken software on Windows and Linux, or not. we chose not.

  18. Cool to see Boxee using XUL. I just added Boxee to the Mozilla-Based Applications page on http://www.mozilla.org at

    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla-based.html

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this or if there’s anything Mozilla related I can help with. Also let me know if Boxee would be interested in using the Powered by Mozilla logo.
