took a while, but we finally got our iPhone remote app approved.
should be good news for anybody who lost their tiny Apple remote.. : )
it is very basic, but we think it’s a good start.
based on your feedback we’ll add more functionality to it.
so please post your ideas on getsatisfaction.com/boxee
tips:
- the boxee remote app has two modes: Gesture and Buttons
- in the Gesture mode you need to hold down your thumb and move it around in order to navigate.
- clicking on the boxee logo acts as Select/Play/Pause
- dragging the boxee logo to the edges of the screen will act as a continuous up/down/left/right
- clicking in an input field will open up the iPhone Qwerty keyboard and will enable you to easily enter text
- the app works over WiFi, so make sure the WiFi on your iPhone is turned on
let us know what you think!
[if you’re in NYC on March 24th then you should come to the boxee meetup. we will release a new alpha version during the event and share some concrete plans for the beta.]

congrats! It took Apple long enough! Here's to more features for Boxee! Long live Boxee!
Congrats! Glad that Apple finally approved it.
Congrats on finally getting approved! I've downloaded but haven't tested yet.
Can you give us an idea of exactly how long it was between you submitting the app for review, its acceptance, and any speedbumps along the way? I'm an iPhone developer too (just submitted my first app), and am trying to get an idea of what to expect.
Thanks!
app works great! very snappy. finally a great way to control my appletv's boxee.
What a great app. Exactly what I needed. Love the fact that there's no extra info on the screen to distract me! Thanks guys!
i am running ubuntu/boxee on 2 machines. 1 machine connects fine, but the other machine says "error connecting to 'myserver'"
how do i troubleshoot this?
Nice work, btw!
I guess I should've done some research before posting…
if anyone else is interested, my problem was with my Settings -> Network -> Servers settings in boxee
elaborate ?
any chance of maybe being able to tie the remote app to one specific system running boxee… right now I could easily see it becoming a war between my room mate and I where we login to each other's system to mess with their media playback… just a thought.
i think it's a good idea to set a default like Apple does with its IR remote in the Security tab
Boxee wars? I like it !

thanks for the review!
i think i am going to embed it into the post
No problem! We LOVE Boxee!
Mr. Pence
It doesnt seem to work with 2.1, using ipod touch if that matters
Same here. I am using iPhone 2.1 – No hosts found. iTunes Remote works.
Pls fix 2.1 issue !!
1. please make sure you are running a recent boxee client version (http://app.boxee.tv/download). you can check your current version via Settings > General.
2. under Settings > Network > Servers, make sure the Web Server is enabled on port 8800.
no go? please head to http://forum.boxee.tv/forumdisplay.php?f=20 and provide as much information as possible on your setup (especially network wise).
thats weird, i cant even install the app on my touch
I can't install the app either on my iPhone v 2.1.
It keeps telling me "This application is not compatible with this iPhone"
Works as advertised. Simple, clean and to the point. My only complaint is that it does not launch Boxee. You have to have Boxee running first in order for the app to work. It wouldn't be too hard to creat a server-side application that looks for the boxee app to launch Boxee with (apps like rowmote do this). Currently if I want to be completely sit back on the couch and watch Boxee, I use rowmote to launch it. Only after it is running can I switch to the Boxee app.
this is a great idea! actually, the apple remote listener on mac is an external application (tip: double click menu on the apple remote to couch-launch boxee) so we might be able to handle it from there. please submit at http://getsatisfaction.com/boxee
G1 owners, no need for iphone envy. There has been an unofficial boxee remote in the android market for awhile now.
indeed.. fetch it at http://code.google.com/p/boxeeremote/
Hey, author of the android version here. Glad people like it.
I actually went through the boxee source code and imitated what I thought might be going on with the iphone version, though I've never used it.
The android app is pretty hideous. If anyone is good at layout, please let me know. The one saving grace is that you can navigate with the trackball, so there doesn't really need to be an on-screen UI at all.
i'll get in touch with you regarding this
Tested and worked amazing!
Just a little detail, its complicated to add subs in a running video, even with the gesture mode.
Thanks!
How could you possibly make this post and not provide a link to the app store!

thanks
Is the app free, and will it work on an iPod Touch?
I found out yesterday that Sony Ericsson phones have a Bluetooth remote for controlling a computer built in. After struggling with it for about 2 hours, I'm finally able to control boxee with an old cell phone with no service (as well as my current phone)!
That's awesome! Can you do a quick how-to in our forum or a video about it? We love boxee hacks!
This is great guys. Thanks. Can't wait to see what Boxee is gonna come up with next.
I like the app, although I was thrown when I moved the Boxee logo (in gesture mode) while a video was playing and it caused it to stop playing and take me back to the home screen (the same happens if you use the arrow buttons in button mode). Maybe whether this happens should be an option, as I would rather the video didn't stop until I specifically requested it.
congratulations and good luck to the Boxee team
Very nice.
Feature Request:
List of Movies/ TV shows / Music etc that can be started from the iPhone/Touch rather than using the interface on the screen (see XBMC app on iTunes)
we had implemented this feature in one of our internal versions, but had too many issues with it. we wanted to launch something simple and add functionality based on user feedback.
i think it is a good idea.
I think it's a good start, though I'd love to be able to browse and select my content in Boxee via the app. That would certainly be faster than going through show/season manually!
I have a general question about using the iphone with Apple TV. My understanding is that if you have an Airport Extreme base Station (prior to the latest upgrade) you run wirelessly at either 5 or 2.4 MPS. The Apple TV and Mac support 5 but Wifi devices like the iphone or ipod touch only support 2.4 and the moment those devices are on your network, the whole network downshifts to 2.4.
That has changed with the brand new airport extreme which can support 2.4 and 5 on different devices simultaneously.
So I guess my question for those using Extreme base station is, when you fire up the iphone do you notice your wireless network slowing down?
What about a Blackberry app? Maybe something for the Bold?
"No hosts found"
Web server settings as suggested above, still doesn't work. I don't think I've ever used webserver, don't know what the password is or should be
Anyone have any clues?
Thanks!
It works ok. sometimes it close by itself. I wish I could watch boxee in my ipod touch.
I've been using it from cydia for a while, thought it was a fanmade application as it was there not the appstore.
Now it's in the appstore I will download from there since this is one of the best apps for the iPhone.
Looks awesome!
This app is so cool!

Can you add an on-demand keyboard button? When using YouTube you have to type to Search. There is no way to do this with the this remote.
Great stuff!
