last-minute opportunity for boxee users at CES
UPDATE:
+++
we have 20 video pitches. http://blog.boxee.tv/ces-video-pitches/ you can vote for your favorite!
+++
i realize this is an *extremely* short notice, but figured it’s a good idea and would be worth trying to make it happen.
we have two locations at CES this year, and 4 of us are going to the show. but we could use some help and thought it may be best to have two users come with us to the show and help us tell people about boxee.
we will:
- take care of your flight + hotel (Jan 7th – 10th) + food/drinks during the show
- equip you with boxee shirts + schwag
you will:
- spend half the day with us giving boxee demos, telling people how boxee rocks, etc.
- spend the other half walking the show and checking out all the cool gadgets
during the evening/nights you’ll be able to gamble, dance, or enjoy whatever else Vegas has to offer. or you’re welcomed to join us as we try to crash the best parties..
if you’re interested:
- make a video of yourself pitching boxee as you will be at the show (that means your face and boxee in the frame! the video should be 60seconds or less)
- post a comment on this post with a quick pitch to why you’d be perfect for the job and link to the video
- deadline: applicants can post till Sunday at 4pm EST
on Monday the 5th we will announce who was selected.
(due to budget constraints this opportunity applies only to people living in the US)

Awesome! Im interested in entering.
Just got a question. I have boxee on my ATV, will we need to be familiar with all platforms? Its the same thing on Mac so im sure thats fine. Thanks.
it’s the same on all platforms. so being an Apple TV user is great (boxee actually works much faster on Mac than on Apple TV)
Awesome i can put together a good video demonstration.
Thanks
wow that sounds like an awsome opportunity. boxee is the most awsomest thing to be released in the last 10 years in its field.
i would totally do it if it werent already hard enough for me to get away for the adult internet convention i’ll be in town for on the 12th.
Is there a formal submission method, or should we just post it on youtube.com and put the URL into the comments?
you can use youtube, vimeo or any other service, and just post a link
Ah, got another question. Is there an age limit? I am about to be 17 but i finished school when i was 15(home schooled) so im not your average 16 year old. haha
i believe you have to be 16 to enter the show, but will need to check re the age issue
While I’d like to pitch Boxee at CES, I haven’t received my Alpha test permission yet. Can we accelerate that step?
Reply with your email and I’ll send u an invite.
I would love to come however I am not sure you want to fly me out from south africa.!
Although I would be a good punter of the product
yup. a bit too expensive..
I’m already going to CES, but would love to pimp Boxee… how about a t-shirt?
because i spend all day, every day pitching boxee.
I would love to go. Most of my analyst friends and investorss will be there. So love to see them as well. I saw the Boxee presentation in NYC as well and was blown away.
I would love to promote the product/service.
Best
I would be a great candidate to pitch Boxee since I’ve been using it constantly from the very moment I received the Alpha invite, haha. I would love to spread the good word of Boxee to all the CES-goers, this program is one that everyone should know about. I will be a benefit to have on the Boxee Team. Where should I send the link to my 60 sec Ad video?
cool. will be waiting for the video. just post the link here.
Oh ok. Here ya go! – http://vimeo.com/2691454
Something happened when I encoded it so it looks like it’s a lot longer than 60 secs but it’s just a blank screen after the 60 second mark. I’m going to upload it fixed right now.
Oh I so wish you guys asked this a couple of weeks ago :/
i wish we would have thought of it a couple of weeks ago…
any chance you can make it?
Sorry but I don’t have any vacation days left, been on holiday for the last couple of weeks but done nothing but relax at home, …if I had know about this I would have canceled this holiday before I started it
…I would simply have loved to go to CES with you guys, next year?
Scratch that last post of mine. Here’s the link to my Boxee pitch video that is exactly 60 seconds. haha.
http://vimeo.com/2691631
unsolicited viral marketing reco: give users a centralized public place to post their videos… youtube, vimeo, flickr, etc. maybe even let us help you choose the winners.
I live about 45 minutes from vegas and could help out if needed. I’d definitely stop by the booth regardless if I hadn’t procrastinated in getting my badge, etc this year.
Anyway, if you’d like some local help, lemme know.
I’ve been enterforming people for years, my last job was at a lan center. I’m not shy, I’ve been hosting events for years. I gotta say, This, is gunna be alot of fun, even just toying around with the video.
Here’s the thing. Ars Technica just pronounced the HTPC dead in an opinion column. Other things have taken it’s place such as set top boxes, cable options, video game consoles, on demand services, that kind of stuff.
Boxee tears a hole in that theory. See the hardware had always been there, but the software was always limited. Now we have an option, we have an engine. The web 2.0 services like youtube and hulu can finally be used all in the same place, and will soon be fully featured. The content you have at home is at your fingers too like the dvd collection that you ripped on to your home pc.
There’s more to it now with the social aspects of the software coming into play. Watching TV isn’t a lone activity anymore. You’re joining in with other people, telling your friends about it and i’m interested to see what else.
you’re nailing it. good points. can’t wait for the video.
Hi Avner!
I’m interested in this and love tech stuff but am not too familiar with Boxee. I’ll try to get myself up to speed quickly with some online research and put together an audition video before Sunday. Might be tough as I have to finish painting my apartment by then, too. Argh! Please take a look at some spokesmodel work I did for Dotster. A clip of my audition is in in the New York 1 video.

-Kathy
will check it out. looking forward to watching your video.
I can’t really make a video of me using boxee as I have been having problems since I upgraded my linux machine. I would like the opportunity to help promote this awesome opensource product, and I would even be willing to dress in a boxee mascot outfit! Pick me I will not disappoint. Check out my website betajunk.com
like the site. if you’re having trouble running boxee on your linux machine, just make a video of yourself pitching boxee
I look forward to winning one of the spots. Will comply Sunday afternoon. Thanks. –ski
Still looking for help? I’m available and PASSIONATE about Boxee!
sure! post your video. show us some of that PASSION
I’m with you Rich Reader. I’d love to pitch Boxee, but haven’t received my invite yet! May I have one, please? Huh? Please? Please? Thanks!
sent you an invite
Why me?
Fresh, Innovative, Ready, Useful, just like Boxee!
That would be great! CES its ready for me!
sounds promising. now we only need to see the video..
Talking about Boxee for less than 60 is *HARD*. I have my 1st video done, but it’s 1:40… I need to do a revised version and get it down to 1 minute – then I will submit it.
you can post both versions..
Here is my 1:38 min version… when I get a chance to re-shoot / edit down to 60 seconds I will post a new link.
http://vimeo.com/2701001
great stuff! and i love that you already got the boxee tee. very cool.
As promised, here is my shortened version, under 60 seconds: http://www.vimeo.com/2718854
However, my wife helped me make the following and this is the video I would like to use for consideration: http://www.vimeo.com/2719079
About myself:
29, Husband and father of 3. Boxee is central to our home entertainment center, and both my 7 and 4 year old know how to use it. I am a geek, but I can easily talk about technology and gadgets with all types of people, young and old. I already have a Boxee tee because I submit error logs and file reports and I was rewarded by a Boxee developer for doing so. I twitter often and already promote Boxee to my followers, co-workers, family, and friends. I love Boxee and I want to help share it with others at CES.
Thank you.
Yea it is. haha. I thought I got it all in 60 secs but realized I left out all the Social aspects of Boxee. Guuuhh, haha.
Please contact me off-blog via email, if you don’t mind. Former Apple/Nokia manager with CES experience + tons and tons of boxee love and experience.
I posted the video on my website betajunk.com. It was shot on a webcam with some ghetto lighting. Sorry, I had to make due with what I had. I’d be happy to recut it with better quality hardware/software.
ps. I was laid off last month, its not like I have anything better to do next week then go to CES.
Hey Avner and team, I just posted a blog post and a video regarding why I’d LOVE to join you all at CES!
http://innonate.com/2009/01/02/why-id-shill-for-boxee-at-ces/
Okay, here is my quick video http://blip.tv/file/1631938/
love it
Love Boxee. I just wrote a post on why hulu is better than a DVR. And boxee solves the biggest problem with hulu.
http://blog.agrawals.org/2009/01/02/10-ways-hulu-is-better-than-a-dvr/
I’m already committed to booth babe duties in another booth, but would love to meet the team and maybe buy you a drink or two.
very cool. sounds good. looking forward to meeting at CES!
Boxee rocks! Passionate about it, I already promote the Boxee concept at work, to friends! Its already ruling my living room (http://twitter.com/kiranboxee) and I truly believe it will rule tons of living rooms in the next couple of years.
Here is my video pitch: http://vimeo.com/2705221
Sorry could not get either my plasma or my MBP in the video, lighting and camcorder setup problems! Dont have much time either, leaving to Tahoe in couple of hours for the weekend.
Good thing I check Boxee blog frequently! I’m going to try to get my video ready tonight, I’ve used boxee on my apple tv and mac and wouldn’t live without them at this point. Definately short notice but I think I can swing it with the boss if it worked out!
Hello,
I would love to have this opportunity to promote Boxee at CES. At the moment I am at home from College (school is where i have my HDTV) but will be there later today. Unfortunately I do not know if I will be able to find a video camera once im up there (Im coming back a day early). Would it be possible to send in a video of me simply telling what I love about Boxee and then sending in more of a presentation video if I find a camera later?
I would just love to have this opportunity to show and promote Boxee at CES and show everyone at CES that I am enthusiastic about Boxee and everything it stands for.
here is the video on me just expressing what i think makes Boxee great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWBFMt5Wi4g
I really believe in the Boxee project not only for its useful features but the staggering way that the team has done so much detailed community research to really make a project about the user. I myself work full-time as a founder for a technology start-up (in Information Security) and know how essential it is to do a great job not only explaining why something is useful, but what makes it unique. My experience organizing technology conferences, giving presentations, selling people on my own company’s product, and my dedication and depth of knowledge in technology would probably make my time at CES with you guys a favorable experience for the project. I speak with investors, CxOs, and end-users daily. Frankly, I could use a few days off from my own company and do with some Vegas time and would love to party with you guys after the tech stuff is done for the day. I look forward to helping the team out at CES and know that I’d make the investment have a good return for all of us.
Video pitch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la3lWSDuZ4Y
Hey, I’m an old guy who loves Boxee on my ATV. I can show that Boxee is not just a toy for young techies but will be a mainstream product. Plus, I have lots of experience working trade shows, such as the old Comdex, so you won’t have to babysit me. I have a masters degree in Computer Science, but I worked 20 years as a sales person, so I am comfortable talking to people. (”How do you tell a programmer is an extrovert? He stares at your shoes when he talks to you”)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4pkps2w0T4
I’d love to attend CES if you pick me! Thanks for your time. Jon
Yea, Boxee on ATV is the best! My parents are both in their late 50’s and I showed them the basics for Boxee and today, my Mom called for me to show her how to watch a movie through Boxee and I’m halfway down the hall when she yelled back “Oh nevermind, I got it.” I was shocked. haha.
Thanks for the unsolicited testimonial on behalf of my candidacy. Where do I send the check?
haha, I’m trying to be apart of the Boxee Team as well. If you go up a ways on this page you’ll see mine.
check out my website betajunk.com i just made the boxee logo in pixelblocks!
Until a few months ago i lived AND worked the geek life. I live in Buffalo, New York and I’ve worked at a LAN center for the past few years, but i’ve been doing retail for almost five years.
When your in customer service you learn that taking a few minutes to connect with customer rather than sell them is the most important part of your job. It builds a company character and personality that people relate to.
If i were to go on this trip, i’d be excited just to meet some of the people who’re going to be there. To get a glimpse of Olivia and Kevin from AOTS, and get to see some booths that are set up, not to mention Its Vegas! That’ll be cool. But the people I’m really interested in talking to are the Joes doing some of the same stuff as I am, trying to get a foot in the door at a developing company or work their way through college.
Thanks Guys

hey guys. i will be down at CES, If I have time I would love to help you guys out. let me know I have lots of experience working trade shows as i do about 6 a year at least.
if you dont need help at least email me where you will be at so i can come say hi. thanks
Here is my pitch video for Boxee…the ultimate media center add on to Apple TV and other computer systems.
I truly believe this product although tagged with Alpha is ready for Prime Time. It is a solid add on to the Apple TV and my Mac. I use it almost everyday watching old shows that I grew up through HULU.com. Not only is the gateway to Hulu make this a great media center but some of the other sites that serve content benefit from this service. I’ve found several webcast that I may have never found if it wasn’t for Boxee. It’s pre-loaded with other great content providers as well not all of them on the main stream market.
Also the creators of Boxee have been easily accessible through media outlets such as Twitter (outlawjn on twitter). I’ve had good customer relations with you guys on there. Always a prompt response to any question I may have. As far as I’m concerned you guys are up there with Apple when it comes to customer care.
Anyways here is the link to my video. Sorry for the crappy lighting. I shot this with my iSight Camera on my MacBook Pro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksWLdaHezoc
Here is my submission, I am bummed I had to cut so many of my favorite features out of my quick 60 second spot. Just for your own info here is some info about me:
Male, 23, Los Angeles area
3 years computer sales experience
3 years as chief computer tech for a school district
Currently full time student at Art Center College of Design studying film, and specializing in cinematography(I know my lighting, and such are crappy in the video)

First off, congratulations on winning i-stage! I started using MythTV in 2003 and am amazed where the Media Center is 5 years later. I was in a video store for the first time in 3 years over the holiday, the storefront that rents physical media is on the way out, thanks for leading the charge. Alright, to the good part. 60 seconds of pure Boxee pitching goodness:
http://www.vimeo.com/2716769
Five reasons I’m perfect for the job:
-I’ve always wanted to go to CES
-I love bringing others joy in the form of free tshirts
-I have a gadget addiction and CES is just what the doctor ordered
-As a social app, the more I lead to use Boxee, the better my experience
-Boxee makes Front Row cry
#6 is a bonus… Practical party crashing tips — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avT6eHoi1jg
Hope to see you in Vegas

party crashing is a very important skill at CES!
Here’s my video!

Sorry about the length and lack of Boxee in the background – I’m out-of-town with intermittent net access and only had time for one take on a borrowed webcam. In any case, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Boxee and I hope my PASSION came through in the video.
Some background – I’m a college student on break who would be floored to go to Vegas to support a product I regularly use on my MacBook (and some used Apple TVs purchased just to run Boxee!). I’ve staffed booths at other conventions in the past (though nothing the size of CES) and know how to approach people walking by and getting them interested in a product. I’m a friendly and outgoing guy, and I usually serve the role of explaining new technologies to Luddite friends in an easy-to-understand manner.
Long story short, I love to use Boxee and I know how to “sell” a product, at large events and to regular people. But most of all, I would love to meet the Boxee team and support one of my favorite new tech product.
Thanks for the opportunity and, no matter what you decide, best of luck at CES!
loved the video. lots of PASSION indeed!
Hey Internet!
Well, here’s my video that tells a bit about Boxee. Sixty seconds is not enough time to show off all of its awesome features, though! But CES is big, and I know we’ve gotta keep the pitch short. So here’s my best:
http://vimeo.com/2714800
I live in the Los Angeles area and I love the concept of Boxee, and how it organizes everything so intuitively. So many other programs have tried, but only Boxee has done it well. Good luck at CES, guys!
Pick me! Pick me!

Quick pitch on “why me?”:
Have been using boxee for about a month and love it. I am on an iMac mini connected to big screen and use a wireless mouse. Going to build a Ubuntu box in a few weeks.
I am an Advanced Toastmaster. Have presented other technical offerings at events around the USA for over 10 years, including Vegas and Reno. Been active in Open Source Software since consulting at Lexis-Nexis in 1996.

Still waiting on YouTube to render hi-res version; but it should appear here when done:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfCDNvTnA1M

man…I’m seeing all these videos that people are making and they are pretty good. My video kind of sucks now that I think about it, haha(Mines #1 on the list).
I am a lot more energetic than my video makes me out to be, i swear. I usually have a big ol goofy/friendly smile on my face and I give my all to get a job done.
I haven’t been able to find work in like 4 months so I’ve been going from school to home, school, home, sch..GAAAHHH haha. So having this opportunity to go to Vegas and showcase Boxee to the masses would give me the kick-start and motivation I need to take more risks and get out in the world. Please pick me you will not be disappointing.

Hello,
This morning my roommate came back so I was able to film in front of a tv with Boxee!
I would be perfect for attending CES with you because I am knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Boxee! I have sales and customer support experience so I know how to connect to a potential user and portray to them how they can use Boxee in their everyday life. I can also show them how easy it is to use while having fun and keeping things upbeat so people will stop by and get pumped up about Boxee as much as we are.
A little bit about me:
Im a College Student majoring in computer science. I wanted to become a software developer because I (like yourselves I’m sure) have a passion for creation. I love to see a problem and solve it in a matter that best fits what the target audience is looking for. Although I am just getting started, I think it is that passion behind the product which is what makes it what it is. This shows in Boxee. From its ease of use to your connection with the customer base and what they want out of Boxee.
For the Boxee team and all current and future users of Boxee I would like to promote it at CES with you. I think it will be a very exciting experience and a great opportunity to expand the customer base. I want people leaving convinced that the moment they go home, that they get Boxee. I want them to not only download it, but to realize how beneficial it is for them, how easy it is to use, and how anyone can enjoy it (not just the computer crowd).
I hope you enjoy my abridged pitch of Boxee and I can join you at CES.
Thank You for the opportunity!
Drew Baumann

Youtube was taking forever… so i went with Vimeo. I apologize if it isnt up at the moment you click it. This is meant to replace my first video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlQrzHn9cPg
boxee has forever changed the way I interact with media. I discovered this software a couple months ago, and am now running it on Mac OS X with great success. I cannot impress enough the passion AND experience that I possess for boxee. Download it now at http://boxee.tv, and experience tomorrow today.
I can guarantee that I would be an invaluable asset to boxee at CES. In approximately sixty seconds, this video merely taps the forefront of my boxee knowledge, while also demonstrating the deep passion that I have for this software. I have attended trade shows in the past and would love to have the honor of being a member of the CES 2009 boxee team.
Thank you!
I have also posted this video to my blog.

Hi, guys!
Just wanted to throw my hat in the ring, I’d love to pitch in and help pitch Boxee! I only just came across the contest an hour ago, so I didn’t have much time to whip it together, so I apologize for its shoddy nature.
A little about myself, I’m a professional IT technician in New York City and left Apple this summer to head multimedia technology work for a series of large music tours. At Apple I dealt with customers every day in both consumer and enterprise capacities, discussing both fields of technology (again with a focus on multimedia) with everyone from novice computer users to IT admins for Fortune 100 companies. I love talking tech with people of all skillsets and love Boxee to death, so please take a gander at my video below. Thanks!

I posted my video on the video pitches but here is a link on here too. I think it was cutting off at the end so I uploaded it somewhere else. Enjoy.

Hello, I’m new to boxee, and I think it is awesome. I would love to go with you to learn more about it and help pitch it too. I live in Vegas (actually, down the street from the convention center, minutes away). Can I join you guys? All I need is a badge. It would be cool to meet you guys and gals.
