fixing bugs

we have released a minor bug fixing version (available for Mac, Ubuntu, Apple TV & Windows). we’re going to spend the next few weeks coding/testing a version that will come out at CES on Jan 8th, 2009.

the bugs we tackled in this latest release include:

  • great improvement to Netflix streaming – it should perform MUCH better. we’d even say it will outperform Netflix on Firefox (btw, make sure your browser is closed when you’re running boxee, since these browsers are a resource hog, like boxee…)
  • skip forward/backward, pause in Netflix - the basic stuff and greatly missing especially when watching movies
  • playing R-rated content on Hulu – should work in all cases of r-rated content. some of the best, most popular videos fall under this category.. (you need to login to hulu for it to work)
  • clicking Menu = Back on Apple TV – after the last update some user on Apple TV complained that pressing the Menu button takes them to the home screen rather than going back to the previous screen
  • TV Shows scanning is working again – your TV Shows should start showing up again. we fixed a bug with local tv show database
  • missing thumbnails on friends activity, recommendations – items from Hulu, Netflix appearing on the friend activity, recommendations should all have thumbs
  • video calibration settings not being saved – was reported by several users on Apple TV. we fixed it, so you only need to calibrate once
  • trailers not showing up for many movies – after installing this version you should see the Trailer option for a good portion of your movie library.

if you’re using boxee on Apple TV and suffering from a black-screen-syndrom (i.e. when you launch boxee you only see a black screen). Scott and Stephan are working on a new launcher that solves the problem. you can give it a try (requires SSHing into your ATV

if you’re using boxee on Ubuntu the repositories have been updated, including support for Intrepid. Gutsy is no longer supported..

Sweet! Last night I updated the Launcher and that fixed one of the annoying bugs (black-screen). Today I can update boxee and fix the other annoying bug (video calibration settings).

    Keep up the great work!

  2. grey says:

    excellent!

    thanks!

  3. F1ReMaN says:

    Guys,

    Thx for this version.
I was having the problems with the remote on ATV… will update when I get home.

  4. Mike Caputo says:

Woo hoo! Got my Apple Tv less than a week ago, installed Boxee almost instantly – and it’s already getting better.

So excited to see what the future has in stored for Boxee!

    Thanks guys! YOU ROCK!

Not to be negative og anything, but this was kinda useless, seeing that 2ndary screen doesn’t work… Well, no alpha-testing for me until january…

    • yuvalt says:

2ndary screen works if you move the main screen to your other display.

      • Svein says:

Not in full-screen, and that is kind of the whole point…

        • vulkan says:

          it works.
you need to make the big screen your primary screen (display preferences – drag the top bar over to the big screen).

the downside is that you will not have a dock on the other screen (the one not running boxee).

this is a workaround. a better solution will be included in the (near) future.

        • Svein says:

Well, making the secondary screen primary is no option. That has always been the solution, and it is not a good one. Basically, the Boxee-team has not fixed one of the major bugs they said they would fix…

  6. Noah says:

Is this for all releases or *just* the Apple TV?

  7. Ben Lancaster says:

    Good stuff. Well done.

Is there a full changelog anywhere?

  8. James says:

You could really do with stating version numbers more often, as it’s all very confusing.

The download page never states which version you’re downloading, and this blog post mentions neither the current or previous numbers, so you never know if you need to update or not.

On the mac, this new version is 0.9.6-4578 and the previous version was 0.9.5-4497.

    • avner ronen says:

good point. we need to make it clearer. also auto-update will be nice.. :)

      • Jason says:

Or just put the date into the release number or something. I often look at the update screen to see if the file name is more “meaningful” only to realize that I have to get on my computer and check to see if the release I am using is the current one.

  9. Jim says:

Thank you for changing the function of the Menu button to Back on ATV instead of sending to the Home screen. Much needed improvement!

  10. RoberT says:

Is there and update for us first Windows alpha testers, if not when will there be. If there is a new version today, how do I get it. When I login to the windows alpha beta download I still am only able to download version 0.9.5.4495. Above it states “we have released a minor bug fixing version (available for Mac, Ubuntu, Apple TV & Windows).” It says Windows but I am not seeing a new version to download. Confusing.

    • rothgar says:

I saw the same thing. But avner pointed out in the comment “nope, also for Mac, Ubuntu and Apple TV” So I think the title said Windows but the Windows version is not out yet. I am just waiting for Netflix on the Windows version. May make me reformat my Ubuntu machine until that is supported.

  11. uncola says:

Wow, really disappointed that they didn’t fix the Secondary screen bug on my imac.

  12. mosten says:

We are supposed to be alpha testing. Why do you not push an update on each commit?

  13. Chrysaor says:

Disappointing to see that the secondary screen bug was not fixed in this release, hoping for a fix soon.

  14. Thomas says:

This is so cool! It makes me so happy every time you guys are updating. That means one more less bug to worry about. Keep up the good work guys.
As for the black-screen-syndrom on the AppleTV, I think its so nice you are working on that problem. We are a lot of AppleTV who will appriciate that bug being fixed!

  15. ryan says:

why don’t you include the version number for reference when announcing a new version like this? Is this version boxee-0.9.6.4578 ?

  16. DL Byron says:

So how do I update? Do I need to google for those instructions, pour over the forums, just know how to do it? (alpha good, please make it easier to know what to do . . .) click on an update button?

  17. Akshan says:

Do you have an orkut acc?
