68% of Lifehacker readers say xbmc & boxee are the best
Lifehacker has asked their readers to vote for the Best Media Center application. The nominees were boxee, MythTV, SageTV, Windows Media Center and XBMC.Â
the final tally gave xbmc 43% and boxee 25% of the vote (~ 10,000 people voted). since boxee is xbmc-based this is a very strong endorsement of xbmc as the best media center platform out there. when we started boxee and partnered with xbmc we did it because we believed it was the best, so it’s great to see that Lifehacker readers concur.
it is also a great vote for open-source entertainment, while Apple’s FrontRow was not on the list the fact that Microsoft’s Media Center got less than 20% of the vote is telling. we believe people prefer a product designed with them in mind (rather than a product promoting a specific OS or store), and that we all want to be free to decide about the entertainment options in our living room, rather than replace one closed system (Cable, Sat) with another closed system (Apple, Microsoft).Â
thanks again for voting for boxee & xbmc!

Testament to Boxee that I had no clue it was based on xbmc. I tried xbmc out once and thought it was solid but obviously a geeks solution to a geeks problem. On the other hand my non-tech girlfriend loves Boxee and everyone I’ve shown it to gets it. I think a lot of the xmbc votes were tips-of-the-hat from people who actually use Boxee
Congrats and I enjoying your software…waiting for the Ubuntu update to come in.
if it had front row or apple tv’s front row as a choice, i would vote for it – boxee is still very cluncky and the interface is kind of a mess.
the poll didn’t really had a lot of options, so it’s no wonder you’ve won.
I think this post has been shot down pretty well… and if there is somethings else out there that is better I would love to see it.
I will admit the boxee interface did turn me off a bit when I first used it coming from xmbc, but to be fair xmbc looks and functions the same as it did 3+ years ago! I also don’t see any built in enhancements like the ones in Boxee.
I think Boxee did so well in this poll because of what the people behind it are doing.
@alon i don’t know why they didn’t include FrontRow. no question FrontRow is a much more mature product than boxee. we’re still in alpha.. FrontRow is good if you live exclusively in the iTunes world, kind of breaks if you’d like to venture beyond.
maybe boxee’s entrance into the market will push Apple to improve FrontRow
The reason FrontRow was not in the poll is because Lifehacker had an article before that poll where it asked people to nominate any media center software they like, then they picked out the five most nominated and only used those in the poll, see: http://lifehacker.com/5102034/best-media-center-applications
So in all fairness, FrontRow was not an option to vote on in the poll because not enough people nominated FrontRow, simple as that.
i didn’t realize this was the way the list of media center apps was decided… cool
quite impressive considering boxee is is still private alpha(actually I think it’s more of a private beta but anyway…).
love the software, it’s a pity much of the video content does not work outside US – Hulu, CBS, etc.
It has been amazing to watch Boxee mature this far. Nothing beats Boxee for content. Even the interface is much improved. We don’t watch much TV but all that we do watch is now through Boxee. Thanks guys.
I will admit coming from having a XBOX and xbmc I didn’t see why I needed anything beyond it, but having no options to hack the XBOX 360 and recently getting an apple tv there was no choice. Even after I installed it I will admit I kept using xbmc, but after 2 weeks I only use Boxee now and it is a godsend.
1) the easy install… nuff said
2) steaming media
3) frequent updates and improvements
4) the developers listen to what the public wants
I could point out flaws / issues, but that would be kicking a gift horse in the mouth imho. I do find it very cool that when I found something wrong with the last update that was bothering me… I come to this site and see that it is already listed in the 15th fix list.
Now I will admit… the netflix post was a bit of a D__k tease once I saw oh btw not on apple tv yet lol!
go uber xmbc aka boxee!
The problem that modifier key can not be recognized when in full screen is still not resolved.
Super-Duper site! I am loving it!! Will come back again – taking you feeds also, Thanks.
