you told us what you want. now we need to make it happen.
we had over 1,100 people fill the survey in less than 12hrs (thanks!!), telling us what content/services we need to add to boxee next.
the results so far:
which one of these TV networks would you like us to add?
HBO 27% (310 votes), Discovery 21% (237 votes), ABC 21% (236 votes)
HBO has been making great television for years. The Sopranos, OZ, Rome, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Entourage, etc. so i guess it shouldn’t be a surprise (especially with True Blood generating so much buzz). the BIG issue with HBO is that they don’t offer full episodes online…
they are making so much money from the cable companies, that they don’t want/can’t risk it. which means users have to go to ThePirateBay, TVRSS, or wherever to get them… that’s a shame. doesn’t make sense. hope TimeWarner/HBO will put their stuff online soon.
i was sure ABC (Lost, Desperate Housewives, etc.) is going to win this category, but the biggest surprise for me was the strong demand for the Discovery channel.
so…. since we can’t do much about HBO… we will bring you ABC and Discovery. they are both using the Move Networks player, so hopefully we can kill 2 birds with one code-base.
which one of these movie services would you like us to add?
clear winner here. Netflix with 80% of the vote. Amazon far behind with 14%.
the subscription model makes sense. you don’t have to think before you start watching a movie. click play and if you don’t like it you stop. no issues like movie expiring after 24hrs, and all that other stuff that comes with the gift of rentals with DRM…
i believe over 8 million people are using Netflix and most of them can take advantage of steaming the movies online for free, so it’s a pretty good value proposition. we should bring Netflix to boxee, and do it better than Xbox360
which one of these video services would you like us to add?
Joost with 55%, iPlayer only with 15%. Veoh 12%.
i was sure our UK users are going to give a fight. we already started working with Joost, so we should be able to deliver on this one.
(hmmm… pssst. Comcast. anyone listening? Fancast with only 7%?! it’s a really good service. may i suggest you give it a marketing push?)
which one of these Internet live broadcast services would you like us to add?
ustream.tv with 33%, qik 14%, justin.tv 13%
issue with this category is that many of the videos are in bad quality and will look like crap (sorry) on your big screen TV. but some of it is unique content, that you just can’t get in any other way. sometimes (most times) availability trumps quality. ustream it is.
which one of these music services would you like us to add?
Pandora owned this category with an amazing 70% of the vote. i was a bit surprised to see such a low demand for Rhapsody and eMusic. it seems the subscription-model for music is struggling (at least among our users).
pandora-bizdev@pandora.com check your inbox. boxee wants to talk.
which one of these photo sharing services would you like us to add?
Facebook Photos with 54% and .Mac/MobileMe with 19%. biggest surprise for me was that photobucket did not do better. the demand for .Mac support is to be expected given our strong bias towards Mac at this stage..
need to look into them Facebook APIs. hope it’s easy enough.

Sooooo…the people have spoken. But what are the chances that Netflix ACTUALLY comes to Boxee anytime soon?
as i wrote in the survey. “your wish is our command”.
we’ll make it happen.
Yea! Can’t wait, you guys rock!
Thanks for the update guys. I really look forward to whatever you guys are able to do. Also, did i hear you guys did a VC campaign. i may be confusing you with another group. But keep up the good work Boxee is awesome.
“other” came in second on the live category… can you talk about that in more detail? who were the leaders there?
stickam?
subscription music: its not that I don’t want it, I just want it with iTunes/ipod. Not that Apple would let you guys use it anyway. Just saying I think there is a demand for a subscription model, at least somewhat.
(I tried zune and the zune marketplace, liked it, but not enough to switch from itunes/ipod/iphone)
@danb in others:
#1 don’t care
#2 don’t know
#3 no opinion
#4 no preference
then some porn stuff
maybe a couple of votes for stickam
Yeah, I like Fancast too and would love to see it on boxee. Jango is nice – a better interface than Pandora IMHO. You might also check out http://grooveshark.com.
You guys are absolutely amazing! I use the appletv with boxee as my ONLY video source. I feel like we are really seeing the future of where tv is going. Today. So in the not to distant future:
Hulu, cbs, comedy central, abc, discovery, netflix, joost, pandora, lastfm all on my appletv.
that’s one big pile of awesome. No wonder you just got a $4m investment. Keep up the outstanding work.
I really believe the focus should be on expanding the content for people outside of the states. For Us Canadians, the CBC Sports Player, for the brits, maybe the BBC iplayer. While there is huge demand for something like HBO, that would be another us only site.. Or even better, create a platform that allows people to add there own content easily, but with a little more control then over at Xbmc.
just saw the confim on the VC campaign. are you guys planning on a small box like the @TV so you don’t have to worry about breaks from apple? Love that boxee works with the @TV but a real box may be a better choice. (please don’t hate jobsians i am writing this from my MBP)
maybe since the videos on ustream may look bad full screen on a tv, maybe we could choose 4 streams and the screen be chopped into 4 sections.
Hah! thanks avner… oh well.. live twit on my computer for now
thanks for boxee… we watch stuff on it every day.
I live in the US.. but one thing I like about the web is getting good english language programming from other countries. So I also vote for more “non-US” station content.
Mac and Linux user available for beta testing.
I voted for ESPN 360 in the TV Other category. What do you guys think about the feasibility of that in the future? I like it because it is quality broadcasting from a big network, but only visible on the Internet. I’d love to able to watch it on my big screen TV.
I really appreciate everything you are doing… I’m suprised about the lack of interest regarding In2TV and Fancast. In2TV has 12914 full episodes catalogued on their site.
Fancast has a lot of different things, haven’t taken a serious looks at duplication across sites such as these. ABC Family has a number of full episodes available as well. Also it seems to me that everyone would be better served more network sites supported than the live options n the survey. When completing the survey I looked at all the sites before I made my decisions and the live video stuff, didn’t seem that good of quality. except for possibly LiveStation. On the audio side… seeqpod might be an interesting option to add, as well support for XM/Sirius web streams and Live365. Lastly If you could concoct a way for use to take the feeds we find and convert them into usable video feeds
Most excited about discovery and netflix
Move Networks powers ABC, ESPN, Fox and the CW. Maybe we could get a quadruple? http://www.movenetworks.com/why-move/our-clients (I really, really want to watch Supernatural on boxee
)
Netflix is the big one for me. If you guys even match how the 360 or pull something off the way they did consider me looking for a donation link.
LOL. C’mon! You say it doesn’t make any sense for HBO to make more money charging for their content than it would by giving it away? *THAT* doesn’t make any sense.
@Robert no, i am saying people want HBO content. some will be willing to pay, some will be willing to watch ads. the alternative is people downloading from bittorrent.. not watching on cable
You left out Spotify (http://www.spotify.com) from the music category. That would be awesome, I’m not sure it’s available in the US yet so perhaps that’s why it’s not on the list, but it’s the future!
+1 on the BBC iPlayer as well from here in the UK.
Great response in 12 hours–”go team, go team go.”
Awesome that you’ll be adding Discovery. Does that mean all of Discovery’s channels (Science Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, etc)?.
Possibly Lala didn’t make a bigger showing b/c of low awareness, but I can say as a user of both Boxee and Lala, that you REALLLLLLY WANT to have these two together. Pandora too, but if there is to be another, it really should be Lala.
is there a way that you can add multiple sources to one media?
like in xbmc?
NEWS!!! My wife is a non-techie but she loves watching news. We need CNN, MSNBC, FOX, CSPAN, etc. Get those and I can drop cable at turn to Boxee 100%.
@Doug agree re news. we need to provide a solution there
Great stuff. I just installed boxee tonight on my appletv. Finally I can actually use my appletv for more than just a paperweight for my cable box. Thanks guys!
Would be great if you could ensure that boxee makes sense for non US based people as well.
Furthermore. Most importantly
it would be great if services like tvtor and automatic saving to the right dirs would work.
in previous years rhapsody was available on safari. now you can no longer get rhapsody on any browser on a mac. i’ve talked to people at comcast and they say that they are not looking into making rhapsody available for mac users at this time. this is dumb – it worked once before and they also use apple products in some of their commercials. and if boxee fan base is heavy on the mac end then i’m not surprised that rhapsody was not high on the list. mac people can’t use it. it doesn’t matter much anyway because pandora is so much better!
Sorry I missed the survey, I would have voted for Rhapsody for the following reasons:
They have an incredible amount of music.
Their organization system rocks the pants off of iTunes.
Its not radio, you can just listen to albums.
It costs the price of 1 cd per month.
Also, to reply to clever above:
The web-based version of Rhapsody works fine in Firefox on mac and Ubuntu linux.
IFC the independent film channel

Also want to vote for daily news sources. Wife demands daily news. Local news sources would be great but would be happy with daily national and world news from CNN and BBC
we opened http://getsatisfaction.com/boxee for people to post their ideas/requests and for others to comment/vote on them
too much US-only content. already most of boxee’s plugins don’t work outside the states. let’s start adding some international content that EVERYONE can access. (ie: deezer before pandora)
Does someone know when Alpha Protocol for Xbox360 will be released?
