Our Team Blog

October 20th, 2008

the date is set. on October 20th we are going to release a new version of our alpha for Mac and Ubuntu (and Apple TV..). it is going to be our final alpha release. after that, it’s beta time…

we took your feedback from the forum, emails and Twitter to heart.
fixed lots of bugs. made changes to the user interface. added new plug-ins.
made boxee simpler, faster, stronger.

we are really excited about this upcoming version.
we can’t wait to get it into your hands and hear what you think.

in honor of the new version we will also try and clean up some of the backlog in our alpha waiting list. there are people who have been waiting for months now. we are going to send out 10,000 new invites on that day.

so October 20th is a big day for us.
it is also the day of the CES i-stage competition.
would be really cool to win it (at this stage it is the most concrete part of our business plan).

not sure what to expect.
going to be a crazy day.

Awesome. I’ve been in on the alpha for only a couple of weeks, but in that time I have fallen in love with the software. I think I’m going to have to break down a d buy the appletv now. Thanks for making media viewing awesome!

  2. John says:

Would be perfect if the Windows version got released soon as well :-)

    looking forward to the 20th…

  3. Sweet! Can’t wait to test. I have not been on the software for a few weeks because school and work, but your release date is after my midterms, so I should be ready to go!

  4. Andrew says:

Shouldn’t you move the drink lot’s of beer to 4 o’clock

I’m looking forward to next release hopefully it sort a couple of UI & remote issues

If this is the alpha this good can’t wait for the beta

  5. avner says:

@John maybe we could get you into an pre-alpha program for the Windows release

  6. John says:

@avner – I would love that, if that would be possible.

  7. Changes to the User Interface?

This wouldn’t include an easier to read / higher contrast interface would it? Not all of us have ginormous TVs and perfect eyesight. :)

  8. avner says:

@Erik yes, much easier to read in the new version. we used different colors, contrast

  9. discomoore says:

What about the windows version? When will that be released? I’m almost tempted to get Linux just to play with this, but if the Windows version will be released soon, I’d rather wait.

  10. avner says:

@discomoore playing with Linux is always fun.. Windows will come out before the end of the year.

we’re going to call out for pre-alpha testers soon.

    Great news !

  12. SteveO says:

I hope there is better AFP / SMB support. Hopefully the Timecapsule issue has been worked out as well! Either way I can’t wait!

  13. tom sella says:

@SteveO yep, issues were resolved on that front.

  14. tgmdbm says:

Hey Tom. Been waiting since Sep 10th, looking forward to getting in on the alpha. How’s the backlog?

  15. @avner Very encouraging to hear that!

  16. clodjee says:

It’s great news to hear there’s a new version coming.

I had lots of trouble with the patchstick but I finally succeeded installing Boxee.

Now if only I didn’t have to wait weeks or even months for the invite…. that would be REALLY great.

Thanks you all for the great work.

  17. SirLeNerd says:

Great news! I love the approach Boxee takes but the current Alpha is definitely that (I don’t mind it, but it frustrates my wife to no end). AFP support would be awesome. Make the program respond more “AppleTV” like would be great too. Sounds like things are moving nicely and I look forward to downloading and testing the newer version next week.

  18. adisonic says:

    wow!!!
can’t wait for windows version to release!! WWOOOOOOO!!!! :) does anyone know how to add boxee on xbox 360 60gb? thnx a lot..

  19. Lumpsack says:

Looking forward to this as I’ve an Apple TV & XBMC seems too hit and miss on playback…

Hopefully I’ll be one of the luck ones who get an invite tomorrow :)
