xbmc/boxee works with Apple TV ver 2.2

Apple released an update to Apple TV last night.

the USB Creator still works, so users who have not installed xbmc/boxee on their Apple TV can just follow the standard process.

if you already had xbmc/boxee installed you’ll need to boot from the patchstick again (following the same steps, starting with #4). the good news it that your profile and settings of xbmc/boxee are all kept, so you just login and get back your good old boxee experience.

is there any way to get boxee to work with a G5 Mac? (even in a limited fashion). thanks!

  2. avner says:

not right now. no support for PPC.. :(

maybe if someone downloads the source and start messing with it.

  3. Gilles says:

ATV 2.2 doesn’t work for me. The apps start, but you lose any ability to use the remote, and it eventually reboots into diagnostic mode. A similar note is actually posted on the atvusb-creator site, though he says he has a workaround.

“5) Apple has released AppleTV update 2.2, This is being checked so until it’s verified there are no problems do NOT update to it yet. Update: The update breaks IR control handling in the Launchers for XBMC/Boxee. A fix has already been found (thanks ericIII) so an update to both XBMC and Boxee Launchers is in the works. Stay tuned ;)

I would suggest people don’t update just yet. All ATV plug-ins seem to be affected in this way, and according to the author of ATVFiles, the video framework has changed significantly too.

PS: Still hoping for an invite. ;)

  4. avner says:

@Giles sent you an invite. boxee works on AppleTV 2.2. no IR issue was reported re boxee, but it may be a problem for xbmc

  5. Gilles says:

    @avner Thanks for the invite.

I actually did a factory restore and updated to 2.2 fresh, installed from the newest atvusb-creator, and I still have the IR issue. The AppleTV itself isn’t frozen, because the clock at the top of Boxee changes and I can still ssh into it to kill the running program. I’ve downgraded while I wait to see if an updated atvusb-creator helps when he releases that. The problem in my case isn’t specific to boxee though.

  6. Chad says:

I already had 2.2 installed and just went ahead and setup boxee while waiting for invite, I too have the remote issue, not a big deal now until I get a working account, I imagine they would fix that soon as they can, cant wait to use this….looks great

  7. avner says:

@Chad, @Giles did you try to disable the Apple TV screen saver? at home i upgraded to 2.2, ran the patchstick again, and all worked fine. no IR issues.

and heard from others that didn’t have any issues.
we’ll run some tests again and get back to you.

  8. Chad says:

I am in, I applied the latest update, which I though I had done, and its all works now…thanks

  9. avner says:

@Chad. cool. post your feedback to http://forum.boxee.tv

  10. Matt says:

Also have no remote power with 2.2 and boxee. :( poop

  11. avner says:

@Matt we’re looking into it. sorry about the mess.

  12. azappletv says:

I installed Boxee onto my appleTV using ATV usb creator. Making an ATV-patchstick set to “boxee for mac”. The install seemed to go ok. I then took out the USB flash drive from the appleTV and the apple TV seems to cycle between the white apple spalsh screen and the “top movie rental screen”. Does not look good. Turned Itunes off on my host MacMini, thinking I had a library loading problem only sort of helped. Eventually it booted up. When I went to see if I could play a movie preview it froze up) rebooting again. Could not reboot using the remote command, had to unplug.

  13. avner says:

@azappletv i’ll ask Davilla to help

  14. Chad says:

Seem to have a bad SMB share bug…I am feeling the effects now,

    http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=3357&posted=1#post3357

Back on firmware 2.0 for now its all that will work for me…

  15. Scott Davilla says:

If you are just running the updated Boxee and ATV r2.2, remember to go to Boxee -> settings -> use internal IR -> OFF.

If you have problems where the apple icon appears over and over, then factory restore ( “menu” + “-” buttons down at power on) , then remake the USB flash drive again using atvusb-creator. Something went wrong during creation and the boxee plugin was incomplete which causes the Finder (frontrow) to crash over and over.

  16. Chad says:

Well, everything was working fine until I added an SMB share then the apple TV was rebooted, that spawned the endless flashing logo and no menu, the menu works fine after removing network connection.

  17. Matt says:

THe fix is up! Works for me anyway. THanks!

    http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=2921&postcount=4

The jist is to turn off the screen saver, and then it works.

  18. azappletv says:

I did the Factory restore and am now up and running with v2.2, and everything seems to be functioning fine. I will remake the flash drive when I have more time and give it a go. When I go to make the flash drive, should I be making it as a ATV-Bootloader or a ATV-Patchstick with “boxee for Mac” selected?

  19. Travis says:

Install is working for me with the screensaver “fix”. Now just waiting for an invite! Thanks Boxee!!!

  20. while waiting for an invite i’ll setup boxee … i have updated to 2.2 before hand … we’ll see if it’ll work :)

  21. zigzag says:

I’d love to give this a test and also check compatibility with our Mac server software (from Nullriver). If anyone can send me an invite, please do.

  22. avner says:

@zigzag sent you an invite. let me know what you think

  23. Matt says:

I made an account on the forum but can’t post.

When I got my files mounted (briefly) it was absolutely brilliant for AC3 playback, good buffering performance getting a file off my NAS, and clear subtitles. The subs seemed to be offset to the left though.

I think the ‘loading’ icon needs to be more animated. The spinning cd just looks like a cirle from across the room- and it was unclear as a new user that it was doing anything other than locking up. It needs to be a shape that sweeps on and off the background pixels, like a triangle.

When I mounted my samba share through nitoTV and used as a local share in Boxee, something happens in translation when I view the files: a lot less of the files show up per directory, and it shows a different path than the one I mounted. Like if I mount /share/folder, boxee shows /share/folder/sub/

When I mounted my samba share in boxee as a network share, it would mount, but not be able to get the folder contents.
Also its a huge PIA to retype the full samba path OVER & OVER. On the ‘manual connection’ page, give an example of the full path syntax necessary to make the mount. And cache the previous mount attempt so typos can be fixed without redoing the whole string. The syntax is really foreign to new users that have never done a samba/nfs mount from the command line.

  24. danny says:

I can’t get v3383 to download; I keep getting the message “An error occured” and it just stops downloading.

  25. Matt says:

@Danny: I had that problem too. Just keep trying, it will resume the download from where it stopped. Eventually it will finish.

  26. Sergio says:

Running 2.2 with the latest XBMC/Boxee common launcher. Everything appears copacetic. My sequence was: a) Update ATV to 2.2, b) Apply the Patchstick v b3, c) Update to common launcher via ATV Boxee/Update. In the process I experienced problems with the choice of USB memory, the repeated Apple Logo syndrome and the loss of IR control. However, all these difficulties were surmounted by simply doing it again. Warmest congrats to the developers for a product that still works even when it does not!

Second subject: Avner, I would greatly appreciate an invite. Thank you for your kind attention.

  27. Marcelo Fernandes says:

Running 2.2 here, is every perfect with my boxee. No exists problems, every day see films hehehehe.

  28. Ian Dalton says:

    Hi there!

Just found out about Boxee. Am a long time AppleTV user. I would love an invite if anyone can hook me up?
    Ian

  29. Lagesek says:

This is exactly what I have been waiting for! My AppleTV will live again. Would love an invite. Selling and supporting Macs since 1984 here!

  30. moti says:

    Hi all weird prob
I installed boxee on my 2.2 atv I get to first screen then I have an icon with “add user” I can’t press the ok/play on the remote but the remote works I can press the down Button and toggle from “add user” to the exit button

    sounds familiar to anyone?

  31. dauclair says:

This sounds great. I have been a long-time Sapphire user for my home library but it has been acting up on me lately and I believe I just broke it with the 2.2 update. Does anyone have an extra invite they could send me? It would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  32. dauclair says:

@moti, that happened to me the first try of installing it too. just make sure you have updated everything after patching and then in the settings you need to change use internal IR to off. that should fix the ok/play button issue

  33. db says:

Updated to ATV 2.2 and installed the XBMC/Boxee Launcher followed by XBMC Atlantis 1 (then 2) and Boxee 0.9xxxxxx.

All runs, SMB works, XBMC works and plays back all media.

    Only bugs for me:
Both XBMC and Boxee have a grey menu bar visible at the top of the screen in all resolutions. On XBMC it actually says ‘XBMC Media Center’. Is this as it should be? or a bug that just I have?

I also cannot get Boxee to playback any Video. It starts to think about it then nothing occurs.

    Cheers.

  34. errorik says:

@db – in XMBC there is an option in Settings->Video->Screen->Resolution. Try changing it to the one that says ‘1280×720 (fullscreen)’. That did it for me… I haven’t got a Boxee invite yet, but I would imagine there is a similar option. Good luck.

  35. leuk says:

Im having problems with boxee and my TV resolution. My TV supports 720p and im using HDMI. I set my apple tv to use 720p and everything is great. But whenever i load up boxee the resolution seems to be a little too “Zoomed in”. It says in boxee that it is running 1280×720 at around 30 hz. Is it my TV that is the problem?

The menu on the left is slightly cut off (if there are menu icons, i dont see them) and basically everything around the screen’s edge is cut off…

  36. Sekou says:

Hey, I’m new to this blog. I came across it when looking for answers as to why after my ATV autoupdated my XMBC/Boxee disappeared. I’ve tried re-downloading and re-installing the ATV Bootloader, but unlike my previous install (the first and only, one week ago) it’s not taking after I do the restart. Thoughts? Links? Thanks in advance for the help.

  37. Sekou says:

Ah, nevermind… after reformating a different thumbdrive it worked perfectly. Keep up the great work!

  38. Dane Brown says:

    Hello Everyone,

I did the patchstick and everything worked great, until I somehow changed the atv resolution. Now I can’t see anything on my tv. I know its working because I can hear the sounds when I push the menu buttons. I tried to do the factory restore but it won’t seem to work. Any ideas on how to change the resolution to one I can see on my tv?

  39. Ryan says:

    Hello,
I just read about boxee today and its patch to work with apple TV. I don’t have apple TV yet. Would the quality of the Hulu content on a 32″ LCD tv be good enough to watch on a daily basis so I could cancel my cable? Im sure some people here have the same idea, and I am wondering if it would be better to buy an apple TV and quit the cable to save 70$ a month.

    Thanks for the replies…

anybody fix this remote not being read thing? Ive had to use factory install twice to get my apple tv to do anything. I am waiting to install boxee until they fix this on apple tv. its quiet annoying. that flashing amber light on my apple tv is steve jobs laughing/scolding me for hacking my apple tv.

  42. mario t says:

    hello,
i was wondering if anyone knew how i could get an invitation to boxee. i followed all of the steps but im stuck at the ogin in screen for boxee on apple tv. can anyone help?

  43. Micah says:

got boxee up and running on ATV v2.2 had a remote glitch but disabled screen saver and boxee’s use internal remote option. All appears to be well, just waiting for and invite so I can get this thing jumpin, can’t wait this will give my ATV new life!

  44. noelty says:

Created a patchstick with the only USB Thumbdrive I had lying around…a 16GB Kingston. For whatever reason the ATV does not recgnize it. I formatted the drive, installed the latest patchstick using the software…does the size of the thumbdrive make a difference?
