boxee for Mac is available for download

it is official. the boxee public alpha for Mac is ready.
the first invitation emails are being sent as i am writing this blog post.

this is a big milestone for us. we hope the boxee alpha testers will help us identify major bugs, usability issues, user interface issues, etc. so when we’re ready to launch a public beta it will be battle tested and ready for prime time.

if you’re not afraid of bugs and freezes. if you have lots of video, music and photos. if you’re looking for a better way to get digital media to your big screen TV, then you should sign up for the boxee alpha

Super excited to finally be playing with the alpha. Is there a place we can make suggestions? Or do you want us to open tickets just for suggested items.

Will we get a closed forum for the alpha testers to discuss things? There are no docs, and while I’m a seasoned xbmc user, there are some things I’m not understanding with the alpha.

For instance, I see that you can filter videos by tv shows, but i see no way to tell boxee that a certain source IS a tv show directory like you can with xbmc. My tv show source is being scanned as movies.

    Thanks so much!

    hi jon,

we’re going to open up the forums hopefully next week.
boxee should be able to identify both TV Shows and Movies within a folder you defined as a video source.

    Team,

Damn good job. This is the first software that I feel could rival the ipod. This on a UMPC or “large” ipod like device could change the world!

BTW, where would you like for us to post Alpha feedback?

  5. I am keen to see this tool working..

I have one question. Do you plan to integrate DVB/ATSC HD digital terrestiral broadcast into the system? Maybe even PVR?

I am really waiting for that, I don’t want another remote control and another system to learn. I want an all in one system.

    Thanks,
    James

we have been discussing the role of DVR during our XBMC DEV CON this last weekend.

it will take us time to get it right, but i agree that assuming broadcast TV is here to stay we will probably need a way to control it via boxee.

question is how and when.. :)

  7. Joe says:

    Great news!
What are the system requirements? cause I’ve got a couple of PPC G3/G4 gathering dust.

  8. tom sella says:

    hi joe,

boxee has been released for intel macs running leopard. ppc is currently not on our roadmap.

  9. Nick Molnar says:

Too bad, I really want to use my old Quad G5 as a media center.

Boxee looks great, can’t wait until this starts to get fleshed out a little more. I’m enjoying my alpha, but it’s certainly not stable/polished enough to replace frontrow for me yet.

    Hulu integration would be super.

  10. avner says:

    thanks, nick.

i could not agree more re Hulu.
love their service and use it frequently.
would be great to have it on boxee.

since boxee is open-source maybe someone will pick up the task of supporting older mac platforms. we currently don’t have the bandwidth to develop it in-house.

  11. Nabil says:

    Simply put, AMAZING!

    Awesome job guys, seriously….

  12. avner says:

    thanks, Nabil!

Can you post a video of what this thing does I am getting confused!

  14. avner says:

here is a video of boxee in action http://www.vimeo.com/1231857

you should really upgrade to Leopard.. if only so you could run boxee :)

  15. I downloaded Boxee under Mac OS X 10.5.4. I got error notifications and everything went wrong. I cannot install Boxee on my Mac. There is a big bug.

  16. tom sella says:

@cannotinstallit – there is only one issue so far we are aware of that’s causing what you describe. issue, and resolution are at http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=84

if you experiance any further issues, please submit at the forum or email support [at] boxee [dot] tv

  17. Rick says:

Wow, this is going to be huge!

  18. Apple Jack says:

I have been waiting 3 weeks for a boxee code to download.
How much longer do you think I will have to wait?
    Thanks.
I want to try it on my Apple TV.

  19. Kevin says:

I know I’m a little late to the party (well a lot late) but I want to try this on my new Apple TV. Anyway I could download the software and start playing?

This is great news for those of us who have been waiting to put everything in one place. In my case, two. On my new Storm and on my Apple TV. Someone show me some love please.

    Please?

  20. Rocky says:

Any idea if this will support the non-intel gen 1 Mac Mini’s?

  21. Very nice information. Thanks for this.
