kindle

maskit has warned me not to buy the new Kindle from Amazon. her weak argument was that i don’t need it. which is never a good enough reason to pass on a new gadget. so far i didn’t buy it, yet…

it looks great in the demo videos. i have one issue with it. their choice to include mobile access (over the Sprint network) makes sense in terms of the ubiquity of access, but it should not have been in the expense of including WiFi. with WiFi they could have enabled users to access all the free content that is out there and save on some bandwidth cost. i don’t want to pay for access to blogs and newspapers that are offered for free. it doesn’t make sense.

there are graveyards junkyards filled with previous eReaders, yet this one seems really appealing in terms of its display, weight and wireless connectivity. i wonder how book publishers think of eReaders. it seems that if for whatever reason they become successful like iPods, the book industry will have to face the same challenges as the Music and Movie industry are going through.

if it is digital it is going to be pirated. and i don’t think writers will have the option of making millions of dollars from book tours (like pop artists do).

back to black(berry)

i am back with blackberry.
i apologized to it sincerely.
told it my “thing” with the iPhone didn’t mean anything. it was not love, but rather a misguided infatuation.
that i hope this trial will help build a stronger relationship between us.

coffee as art

art in coffee

in my opinion israel serves the best coffee in the world these days. and my “scientific” way of measuring it is by the quality of coffee you’ll get when you go just to any coffee shop or restaurant.

i am living in the US where it is very hard to get a decent cup of coffee. but have been drinking coffee in Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, UK, and other less coffee-savvy countries. there is no comparison in my opinion. israel is #1. the education system may be failing, corruption rising, the security situation if fragile, but the coffee is just getting better.

on my last visit we went to Ilan’s Coffee. a small coffee chain. the barista there adjusts the grinding machine based on the time of day, temperature and moisture… the espresso drips for 24 seconds… the density of the frothed milk is perfect.. the result is amazing. to top it all, if you are being nice and they are in the mood, the girl at the bar makes drawings on the surface of the foam (using a toothpick, example above).

coffee heaven.

sold my iPhone

it was a short lived romance.
after the initial infatuation i quickly learned to hate my iPhone.
crappy phone and even crappier email device.
great iPod and great browser.
but i kind of want to talk on my phone and check emails.

so i sold it (took a $150 loss on the transaction), but can use the money to buy the Blackberry Curve..

my upgrade to the Leopard OS killed my iTunes, which is kind of ironic.
so now i am only using Songbird and seriously considering getting an MP3 player from another vendor.
